...Elvis's live version is at number 15 in the British charts. That song's pretty much the only Vegas-era Presley I like. I've no idea why it's suddenly in the charts but it's his first 21st century British hit.

Anyway, do you prefer Da King pre-army, post-Colonel Parker or the Hamburger Years? Which songs and why?

I much prefer very early Elvis, especially the Sun Sessions:

'That's All Right'
'Blue Moon Of Kentucky'
'Mystery Train'

There's a real excitement in the music, and this was the point rock 'n' roll was really born with the fusion of blues and country. A white dood had never really sung pop music with this much excitement before. Forget Bill Hailey - he was just a middle-aged country crooner with a silly curl in his hair. Also, the slap-back echo makes these recordings sound really cool.

Let's hear it from Scotty 'n' the boys.

I also love 'Fever', whether it's Elvis or Peggy Lee singing it (although Gingershnapps does my favourite rendition) - just 'cause it's such a great song.

I perfer Elvis now.

:p

I am not into Elvis but if I had to choose, I say his early days, like 57-59. He was alright in the 60's but in the 70's he was a joke. He died the day I was born. maybe I am Elvis reincarnated.

I AM getting fat...

I always thought that Elvis was an ass. Why anyone would make a big to do about him is beyond me.

I guess we are beyond you then...

:p

the only Elvis track I ever really liked was called "Guitar man" and it was never a hit and isn't even on napster or wasn't last time I looked.

It's ironic that Sam C Phillips, who discovered Elvis, made only $35,000 when he sold Presley's recording contract and the Sun Collection tapes to RCA-Victor.My favourites are Blue Moon(1956) and Good Rockin' Tonight(1954).

I never liked Elis much, but he inspired one of my fav songs of all time - Walking in Memphis.

MP ;)

I thought Elvis was REALLY cute when he was younger.

I'm not really a fan of his, sorry.

I'm with you on the John Cale cover of 'Heartbreak Hotel', Dillinger. My band once did a cover of one of his songs from 'Fear' - 'Buffalo Ballet'. It's a pity his solo career didn't get quite as much attention as Lou Reed's.

The King

Early Elvis music kicks ass, his bare-bones "hillbilly cat" sound was revolutionary in it's day, scandalous. Parents in the fifties were scared to death of this guy, wigglin' his ass like no other before or since. "Race Music" never got such a green light, Elvis used to sneak in and hide behind the piano at the colored bars because he loved the music so much. His Sun Sessions had so much fire and raw energy, the FBI and the CIA kept files on this disruptive force, unleashing his wares on a generation brought up on Doris Day and Perry Como. Scary fuckin' dude. And he could dance!

And then he got drafted and discovered pills.

Exactly, Purp. Too easy to forget how innovative he was when he first appeared.

Dillinger - I was surprised to hear about Joey Ramone dying. I didn't know he was ill. Gabba Gabba Hey!

The King!

I remember hearing Elvis at a very early age.My mom idleized him,and had most of his albums.

The music he sang in his early years, was an extention of the
Rock-a Billy" music that had been started by artist like Hank Williams,The Stanley Brothers,Little Jimmy Dickens and so forth.

My personal collection of Elvis,(ALL ORIGINAL ALBUMS) consist of:

2 Elvis Christmas Albums-Both have the same cover on them. But one was recorded in Mono-LPM-1951RE,and the other one is recorded in Electronic Stereo-LSP-1951(e).Great stuff. And you can actually tell the difference between the two recordings.

1 Elvis in G.I. Blues-LPM-2256
This was recorded in mono, but they called it "New Orthophonic" High Fidelity.Another great album.I would have to say that "Shoppin' Around" is my favorite song on this album.

1 Elvis Moody Blue-AFL1-2428 Stereo
The album is seethrough blue. Not black like most albums.A first for the record industry.
This is a later album by the King. All the songs on this album are from 1974 to 1977.My fav. is "Unchained Melody"

1 Elvis Aron Presley-25th Anniversary Limited Edition-1955-1980-L-14749
It has 8 albums in this collection.
Record 1-An early Live Performance-Monolog.

Record 2-An Early Benefit Performance.

Record 3-Collector's Gold From the Movie Years.

Record 4-The TV Specials.

Record 5-The Las Vegas Years.

Record 6-Lost Singles.

Record 7-Elvis at the Piano-The Concert Years-Part 1

Record 8-The Concert Years-Concluded.

I'll have to tell ya that this has songs on it that no-one has ever heard unless you have this set.

I know that there are some people out there with more Elvis albums, but this is a pretty good selection.

In my eyes he's still the "KING".

Intrusting. In a recent poll by the BBC the "voice of the century"(last one) was Frank Sinatra, followed by Elvis and Nat "King" Cole.

Dire Straits, one of my favorite bands, do a son g 'Calling Elvis'. That would have to be the best Elvis tack in my opinion.

But I love the way he moved.

I disliked Elvis until I was 19 and designed and ran lights one summer for an Elvis impersonator. This guy was very good, and had a big, big show. His band was kick-ass, and the crowds that came to see him were astonishing in their idolatry. Babies were brought up to the stage for him to kiss, I swear to the Mythical Being!

Anyway, after six shows a day for three months, I started to dig the music.

This has nothing to do with Elvis. Elvis sucks.

Kerrie's back! Hooray!
