Having made great money inventing a hot computer program, the young couple have "retired" in their late twenties to Vermont or Wyoming or New Mexico someplace similar where she opens a small store as a hobby while he writes his memoirs and shops for art.

Unfortunately, they find they can not conceive - his sperm is strong, she ovulates, but her uterus just won't cooperate.

They try in vitro, but she still miscarries.

Finally they decide to try a surrogate to carry their fetus. The young woman is a mom already, but her husband is in prison after falling in with a street gang. Afraid that his buddies will keep calling her, they move her out to the country to work at the store while she carries the baby.
