Surrender

He took a deep breathe before he began to speak trying to find the time to get his words together. He was a man of action, not one of words and it was hard for him to get the words he wanted to say to come out and not just clamp up. "It's nae weakness to show emotion out here. Sometimes a person puts away things fer so long they'll be overwhelmed if they don't let it out. I take it yer family was a victim of the war? It claimed many lives. So much senseless killing on both sides..." His eyes glazed over as he thought of Fort Davidson. "A lot of innocent people lost their lives for a lot of stupid reasons." He sighed and patted her back. "You nae have to apologize lass. We all have ghosts and demons to fight."
His mind screamed in protest as he spoke his next words. "You handle yourself well with a gun, and I would be remiss if I allowed ya the opportunity to land yerself in another situation like you were in this afternoon. Two sets of eyes can watch over each other better than one. Ye don't have to be movin on if ye don't want to."

Julia looked up at him surprised that he would want someone with him. She thought for a moment and nodded her head. He might be right, traveling alone at this time might just be a stupid idea.

"Yes, I can cover your back, a bit of company could be what I need to figure out what do do with my life. Reconstruction so far has not worked but who knows given time it might. I just don't know how I will ever forgive the North for killing my whole family. After all, we were cilvilians"

His arms felt good around her but she figured she best break the hold as they were to be traveling buddies. She did not want a relationship beyond that. She let go of his waist and sat up.

"I guess we better get some sleep, thank you for waking me up. I just hope that doesn't happen too often. It funny that dream only started about a month or so ago. I wonder why it came and I hope it doesn't come again"

Julia pushed back onto her bed and laid down looking at him as she laid down. She would not turn her back to him again.

He lay awake for most of the rest of the evening going over his decision in his mind. What had he been thinking? O'Shien Toole, rugged Irish warrior. Veteran of the Civil War, over three hundred men dead by his hand. And now he found himself completely in turmoil thanks to the lady laying next to him. Her plight had somehow resonated within him. Her entire family burned to death. She was too much like him. That was it he decided. He was just seeing his own past in her. His family.. shot to death by British Loyalists... even his youngest brother Thaddeus, only six at the time. Those dirty bastards had destroyed his life, taken his family and loved ones and driven him out of hte country. He saw so much of his own past in her, it scared him. He did nae want to have to rely on another human being, but found he could no sooner push her away than he could push himself away.

He continued thinking about all the people he had lost for most of the night, remembering how they looked when he found them, lined up. His pa had looked stoic, brave to the end, refusing to let the loyalists see him cower. He died like a man. His ma's face was one of sadness, utter despair as only a mother who knows her children are about to die can have. His older sister had died with an angry look on her face, cursing those loyalists, she was always a strong lass. But Thaddeus... Thaddeus had died scared, not knowing what was happening, all he knew was fear before he died. A tiny sob escaped O'Shien as he thought about it and he closed his eyes tight, rolling onto his side away from Julia, praying she did not hear the sound.

"You fix breakfast and I'll get the horses taken care of." I said releasing her from my grasp. "I never looked so good in that shirt, Cassi." I said smiling, "you sure do! Why don't you keep it with your things and it will be handy when you need it."

Cassi smiled and set to doing what she does best. She quickly strolled down to the water and hiking the shirt to her belly reached in the water and literally plucked two large ones out and brought them to the camp. The fires took a few strikes to revive and she soon had fish and taters frying.

"It be a tad longer, Masser Alex.. an breakfas be ready." cassi told him.

True to her word in less then ten minutes she was serving him food and makeshift coffee. Very dark and strong however but refreshing just the same.

Julia knew that sound, she had been fighting the pain that O'Shien was now in. She moved over to him and pulled him towards her. She embraced him holding him close as a Mother would with a child. Her arm pull his face to her breast so he could vent his sorrow. Julia rubbed his back as his shoulder shook with his supressed pain.

"There, there, my darling"

Her compassion overcomes her usual reserve as she tries to comfort him.

I take the offered plate and cup of coffee and sit down on a nearby log. "Cassi, I still do not knwe how you do it!" I said between mouthfuls of the fish and taters. "You make every meal a feast, " I paused and looked over towards her as she ate her meal, "And I do not mean just the food either."

We ate in silence a few minutes and I drank my coffee and returned to the fire, leaving my empty plate and pouring another cup of coffee. "Cassi, some more coffee for you", holding up the pot.

I surveyed the camp area and it was kept pretty clean. I'll leave the leanto's up and the fire place together. It was a nice camp, someone else would make use of it.

I walked around the camp and any trash and other items I picked up and threw in the fire. I disassembled the smoker and layed the smoked dog meat out, It would have to be wrapped.

"Cassi. I'll do the dishes and you can get dressed," I offered, "and we have to wrap up this meat." With these last chours done, we can finish packing and load the horses and be on our way. I gathered the cups, dishes and pans and down to the pond I went. I scrubbed them clean with sand and rised them of and carried them back to the fire. I finished the last of the coffee and poured the grounds and leavings into the fire. I found a rag near by and I wipped everything dry, Cassi didn't like putting away wet utensils.

"Hey slow polk, What is taking you so long to get dressed? I called out sitting down on the log and putting on my socks and boots. I picked up my wide brim hat and placed it ontop of my head and tilted it back.

"I am going to get the horses," I called out as I left the camp area. I unpicketed the horses and removed the hobbles and with the rope harness I led them back to camp and down to the pond. They stamped a little and backed off, but then dropped their heads and drank. I didn't alow them to drink to much, they would get more later. I led them back into camp and tied them off to a nearby tree.

"Cassi, I still do not knwe how you do it!" I said between mouthfuls of the fish and taters. "You make every meal a feast, " I paused and looked over towards her as she ate her meal, "And I do not mean just the food either."

Cassi chuckled and admitted "Maybe cause I's likes a good fillin meal ta eats."

Eating was quiet as she pondered what to do next. Her thoughts were on Miz Julia and where the girl wandered off to. Cassi might have felt powerfully jealous but still she was just a young girl.

"Cassi, some more coffee for you."

"I's only drinks one Masser Alex." She replied moving about the camp trying to clean up. Yet she noticed that Alex was thinking the same thing. It took no time to really pick up everything and prep the packing. She watched him tear down the smoker.

"Cassi. I'll do the dishes and you can get dressed," I offered, "and we have to wrap up this meat."

Cassi reached into the one saddle bag for some special paper that she had saved from her home. It was a magic paper to her as the butcher wrapped everything in it for the farmers, so she turned it over and wrapped the meat tight. She took a string off her shirttale to tie it shut and slipped it in the one bag that held other preserved foods, like jerky.

"Hey slow poke, What is taking you so long to get dressed?"

"I's getting dere." Cassi called back from the busjes slipping on that special dress and smoothing the front down to rid the wrinkles. Then she stepped out looking like a dark faerie nymph.

"I am going to get the horses," I called out as I left the camp area.

Cassi lugged the two saddle bags to the horses and smiled at Alex. She was very proud to be given the dress and she made a quick twirl to show him how well it fit. "I's sure thankful fer dis dress, Masser Aex... I's will be sure ta keeps it nice lookin."

He grimaced, the lie sounding stupid even to him. But he refused to let her see him weak. He rose up from his bedding. "I'm just goin to have me a wee bit of water by the fire. Hopefully'll clear the problem up." He grabbed one of his rifles and exited the tent, avoiding making eye contact with her as he went.

a re-post of my charector.

ooc ( just wanted to put a repost of my charector and her happenings since i thought that she was possibly going to be found soon. *shrugs* if not i can wait lol i dont mind.)

Name: Jenny Mathers
Age: 19
Status: very recently widowed
Hieght:5 foot 3 inches
weight" 99 pounds
Hair: curly redish blond reaches to her bottom always kept in a braid.
Eyes:soft brown

History: Jenny grew up in the south always moving wiht her family from farm to farm her parents always worked hard. she lost both of them during the brutal fighting of the war. leaving jenny alone. but at 18 she married James mathers. a year later when jenny delivered a boy child James decided it was time to take his small family to his parents for the time being. feeling it would be safer for them there. so he packed what little he could in a wagon leaving room for jenny in the bed of the wagon behind him. so that her and the babe could rest while they traveled. they traveled at night and camped during the day so that jenny would not become over heated.

I.C.

Jenny looked up at her husband the night was still almost to warm for her and she had thrown off the blanket he kept trying to force over her and the baby. she couldn't help but smile at him. she trully did loves this man of hers. then she looked at her new son named johny after her father so tiny and innocent. she never knew love could be so strong. she felt his hungry lips pulling at her tender nipple as he suckled and giggled. " this boy of yours is a little pigglet james." james burst out with a hearty laugh that warmed her insides. " as well he should be my lovely he taked after his papa after all." at this she laughed too. then she heard it. horses comign up on them from behind. it was the first time they had seen another rider and it being so late at night too. she tryed to look behind them but she could not see from where she lay behind james. looking up at him she could see that he had tensed and was clicking at the horses to go faster. " james ? what is it whats the matter?" she could hear the fast pace of the horse and worried. where they comeing after them? james looked behind them and shouted as a gun fired booming loudly in the silent night " get down Jenny cover the babe" he was whipping the horses even faster trying to get away from teh men that had fired at them. but they only had the two horses and they where weighed down by the wagon full of their belongings. the baby began to cry as the booming of gun fire continued and jenny moved further down laying on her side and pulling the blanket of her and her new born. then she heard it.. another round of gun fire and then james screamed the wagon tilted and there was a loud thump. to affraid to look up jenny held on tighter to her infant and screamed for james. but there was no answer. and the horses where not out of control. the wagon went to close to a gully and tiped onto two wheels before fully tiping over.. the horses screamed and then there was silence. the men that had been after them stoped their horses and watched as all this happend. they went and tryed to tip the wagon back over but seeing as there where only two of them they did not have the strength. so they got on their horses and rode off as fast as they could. jenny lay unconces with her baby protected in her arms. the baby began to cry but jenny could not seem to make her eyes open to tend to the poor baby.

ooc( this is my first try.. i did my best. tryed to have some what of an original charector. hope you guys dont mind. if so i can take the baby out and switch it up a bit. just thought i would try something a bit differant.)

Julia knew he was lieing but she also knew why. She herself would never allow anyone to know her feelings that is why she appeard cold to most people. The dream made her vurnable and now she seem to set him off. She watched him walk out of the tent trying to figure out what to do for him. Shaking her head she followed him out to the fire. She cleared her throat.

"It's a warm night isn't it"

She sat close to him trying to show a bit of friendliness for a kindred soul. She knew she could'nt mention what had just happened and she was a bit out of her element trying to help a man. She didn't know enough to be the typical southern belle. So she sat by him hoping to come up with an idea.

"Warmer than it generally be this time of year." He agreed as he reached for one of the bandits canteens and sniffed to make sure it water before taking a long sip. He put it down and sighed staring into the sky. "Tonight has been an odd night for me lass." He said honestly, still staring into the sky. "Honestly I had nae intention of saving you when I shot those men. I was only rightly concerned with obtaining a little more clothing and ammunition fer me guns." He looked down at her now staring into her eyes. "Ya remind me too much of some things in me life I've been killin up and down the South to try and forget. But evertime I have the chance to push ye away something inside me stops meself. It almost feels like some back of me is tryin' o allow myself to heal but the rest of me wont have it none." He sighed deeply, returning his gaze to the sky above.

She watched him closely after he admitted an off hand need of her but did she want to be needed. He represented all men to her at this moment. The fear of being possessed and used in unspeakable ways. The reason she left her burnt down planatation to avoid someone who her Father had arranged a marriage with. Yet he was like her also, hurt, lost and in need of human contact. Was it possible to be company for each other and never touch. She did not know. He spoke of healing and she knew she was in need of that also.

"O'Shien, I also had several opportunities to leave you. A few months ago I would not have given it a second thought to go and roam as always. But for some reason, I don't quite understand I couldn't leave you. It was not fear of what is out there, that I know for sure. We somehow are kindred spirits, very much alike in background and attitude. Some would say a match. Do, you think we could just be friends traveling the same path without involvement as man and woman. I would like to think of you as a friend but I do not know if that is possible between the sexes"

She had said more than she expected to, maybe too much as her eyes looked into his trying to read what he was thinking in them.

"It's nae the problems of a relationship between a man and woman that worry me. I'm not used to travelling with anyone anymore. Some might say I be lackin practice in me social skills." He chuckled a little. "I do nae know the answer to your questions lass. If ye truly feared that I would push meself upon you I highly doubt you would have stuck around this long." He sighed. "In any case the night will soon be over, daybreak will be coming soon. I believe, if ye still wish to follow, that we should ride towards a trading post half a days ride north of here. These bandits left many goods that could be traded and their horses will give me feet some much needed rest."

She thought for a bit and he was right for some reason that she did not understand she trusted him. He had been honest from the first minute they had met. She might not have liked what he said at times but it had been honest.

"Well again we match as I have lost most of the social graces pounded into me by my parents. Long days and even longer nights alone have changed me. I will go with you as for some strange reason beyond even my own understanding I trust you O'Shien. I do not have anything to trade but I do have some gold stashed away in my hoster and sheifs where my daggars lie. I will give it to you to purchase whatever you think is necessary for what ever journey will will make"

She unbuckled her holster and took the now useless pistol out of it and placed it under her arm. She held her hand out under the holster and poured a small quantity of gold into her palm. She handed it off to him. She took off her vest to reveal the daggars on both arms, untieing them she removed the daggars one at a time and walked over to him. Taking his hand in hers she watched as his large hand opened and she empty both shief into his hand.

She had more in a bank in Atlanta but he did not need to know that now. She always had the means to stop her wandering just not the need to do so.

"There, that should pay my way so that I am not a burden to you"

She began to put on her weapons once more.

"Well I'll be darned", as I whistled, "don't we look pretty!" Cassi spun around and I had to admit I had picked the perfect dress for her. She even had the ribbon in her hair.

I took the saddlebags and tied then on behind the saddles and draped the blankets and tarps over the top. I Checked the sharps and slid it into the saddle boot, hung the extra pitol and belt on the horn. "Is that all of our things? Do we have it all? Ready to go?!!!!!"

I dropped the reins and took Cassi in my arms and pulled her close, tilted her chin up and placed a soft kiss upon her lips. I do not know how long it will be till I can do that again, I kissed her once more and released her.

I took her hand and picked up the horse's reins and led them out onto the road. Once on the road I turned west.

"Cassi", I said, " let's walk awhile. Get the stiffness out. O K?"

"Well I'll be darned", as I whistled, "don't we look pretty!"

Cassi blushed and it was noticeable as she moved closer to the horses.

"Is that all of our things? Do we have it all? Ready to go?!!!!!"

"Yes Sirrah, dat be it all, Masser Alex. taint noffin lef ta pack." Cassi nodded and then rose into his arms riding with him. She liked being in his arms and quickly left the fussing from last night in the embers of the old campfire.

Even when the kisses ended Cassi felt warm inside as the road came into view. "We's goin ta go by da road a piece?"

"Cassi" I said, " let's walk awhile. Get the stiffness out. O K?"

"Yes Sirrah," Cassi slid off the saddle, landing on the bare feet. Thankfully he didn't notice since the hem line hid her feet from eyesight. "Shore is a preddy day. I reckon we's can make it ta the next counny iffin we's stick ta the road."

Cassi took the reins of their second mount and was walking along when she thought she heard a faint noise. She stopped and listened carefully, something just didn't seem right.

As we walked along, I noticed Cassi becomig more attentive.

"Cassi", I asked, "is there something wrong?" I knew to trust Cassi and if she sensed something was wrong. We stopped and listened but I didn't hear or sense anything.

We started walking again, being quiet as possible and still nothing. The road took a slight curve to the right, but in a field to our left was a pair of horses still in harnesses and their leads tangled in the brush. I went over to them, leaving Cassi in the road with our horses.

I approached the two horses and I quieted them down before I tried to free them. In short order I had them freed and leading them out onto the road. Their coats were dry so they must have been there for awhile.

"Cassi, you lead ours and I lead these", I said, "they are still a little skiterrish." We started walking again and as we rounded the curve, there in the ditch was a wagon over on it's side. I stopped and removed my sharps from the boot and craddled it across my arm and we walked slowly up to the wagon.

As we approached, Cassi's hand flew up to her mouth as we heard a baby's crying.

under the wagon jennifer still lay unconcios. there was a wound on the left side of her forehead that ran in to her hair line at her temple the bleeding having stoped the are was swollen and bruised with dryed blood on her face and her blouse. the baby though lay next to his mother unharmed all but being hungry and very upset about having gone so long with out being fed or tended to.

"Cassi", I asked, "is there something wrong?"

"Somethin don't seem rite, Masser Alex." Cassi replied.

She pointed to the side and soon they had acquired another pair of horses. Cassi took note of the type of reins they bore. "Dem be wagon hosses, Masser Alex. Der must be a wagon some place close by."

"Cassi, you lead ours and I lead these", I said, "they are still a little skitterish."

Seeing the wagon made Cassi nervous. She really hoped that it was just an abandoned wagon, that was before the whimper of a babe sent her heart to racing and tears falling from her big ole caramel eyes,

"Oh sweet Lawd .. dere's a babe in dat wagon." She gripped the reins tight as she wanted to go and rescue the crying child. Alex wouldn't have it as he handed her the etra reins and went to check on the people in that tipped wagon.

O'Shien looked at the small fortune she had been travelling with before pushing the gold back to her. "I will nae take yer money. As long as we be travelling together ye can hold onto it and WE will use it as needs be." He smiled, trying to be friendly, but still a little in shock about the whole turnaround this night had produced. "And you should keep it because if we end up getting seperated ye will need it." He pointed to all the gear he had loaded up on the bandit's wagon earlier that evening. "I'll be able to fetch me a pretty good price for this gear so I'll nae be owrried about runnin' short on cash. Just need to hit a trade post and sell it." He yawned, realizing it was still night and he had gotten no rest yet. "Let's get back to sleep and and we'll head out on the morrow." He went back into the tent, laying down next to Julia and falling into a comfortable sleep. They awoke the next morning, had a quick breakfast and prepared the wagon to travel north. "Hell maybe we'll get real lucky and there'll be room at the inn to stay a night in a real bed." He said chuckling as he got the wagon moving.

OOC: Wanted to speed through the rest of the night of all stories are happening around the same time, hope that's alright!

Julia followed him into the tent and as her head hit the bed roll she went off to a dreamless restful sleep. Morning found her a bit tired but ready to go. As they ate she thought of his refusal to take her gold and she smiled. He was as independent as she was. When it was time to leave she climbed onto the wagon with him and gave him a smile.

They were on the road to a town that she had never been to. The thought of laying in a comfortable bed had to be like luxury she thought. The wagon was a bit narrow and the whole side of their bodies pressed into each other but for some reason his closeness did not bother her. It felt natural. She kept her eyes moving over the terrain as he conscentrated on his driving.

"Yes, I do hear it Cassi!" I responded, "but go slow and stay behind me." I walked carefully up to the wagon and the baby's cries became louder. I slowly walked around to the other side and the sight made my heart jump.

"Cassi, tie off the horses and come here." I called out as I went around to the far side of the wagon. My eyes scanning the the immediate area and nearby tree line. All appeared quiet and normal, except for the wimpering of the baby.

I knelt down by the woman and the baby and as Cassi came around the corner I told her to come over to me. I had set my Sharps aside and lifted the baby up and handed the child to Cassi. I then turned back to the woman and found she was breathing. She was alive! I quickly pulled out some of the blankets from the wagon and made a place for Cassi to sit with the baby in the shade of the wagon. I helped Cassi to sit and I went around to the horses to get a canteen and returned.

I checked the woman's arms and legs to make sure nothing was broken before moving them and reviving the woman. I took a rag and wet it with water from the canteen and applied it to her forehead. She stired a let out a low moan as she was slowly coming back.

was that the baby crying? oh someone was puting water on her face."mmmoh" jennifer opened her eyes a slit and looked about her everything was so blury. slowly her suroundings came into focus "james?" jennifer touched the hand of the man next to her. not james the hands a not the same. james had soft hands. even though he worked constantly he always had soft warm hands. then who? james.. then it all came back to her in a rush of memory the riders chasing the. the gun shots,
the terrible screams of the horses, the wagon tiping over. it all came back in such a rush."nooooooo james!!!!" the scream coming from jennifer was almost unearthly so filled with sarrow and pain that she hardly reconised it as her own. after a few moments she calmed enough to realize that her new baby was not with her. feeling around she looked up the man with a look of intense pain " my son?" she found herself holding her breath waiting for the answer. not sure she could go on living if she had lost both the loves of her life in one horrible night.
