Their team was up by one run but the opposing team was up at bat. The entire stand was silent as the next batter took his place. It was the playoffs. This game would determine who would be moving on to the college world series. Kali sat in the stands on the edge of her seat. Her best friend played short stop for their team and she never missed a game.

The batter smacked the ball and you could hear the crack of the bat as it made contact. The ball headed straight at the short stop but right as he went to scoop it up it slipped. He recovered and made the throw to home for the out but the runner crossed the plate just in time.... The game was over. They had lost. The croud immediatly cleared the stands, everyone mummbling and talking about the play that cost them the game.

Kali couldn't help but to look for him..... she knew how important the game had been and she knew her friend would need someone now. She saw his girlfriend shake her head and head off with the group of her friends, without even looking for him. She bit her lower lip as she climbed down from the stands and around the cage to the dugout. He was sitting by himself on the bench. Kali walked into the dugout and took a seat on the bench as well. Not sitting too close to him and not saying anything. She knew there was not really anything that would make him feel any better, but she was going to be there for him when he was ready to talk.

He had disappointed everyone. He heard the whispers and gasps from the crowd as soon as the ball had left his bat. Now everyone was leaving and he felt at his lowest point. He saw his girlfriend turn with the rest of the crowd and leave. This didn't surprise him, she was a bitch and he knew it. He retreated to the dug-out and sat on the bench, alone. A heavy sigh escaped his mouth as he replayed the incident over and over again in his mind.

It wasn't even as if he was angry. Most people would be angry with themselves for not winning the game but Tony only felt the overwhelming guilt from letting everyone down. He tried to tell himself that there was nothing he could do about it now and it would be better to just accept it but he knew that he had not faced the full consequences and this were not going to get easier for him in the coming weeks.

He noticed that someone had come to sit with him. There was a woman sat far down the opposite end of the bench. Tony recognized it as Kali and remembered that she would never miss one of his games. This only upset him more as he thought of another person he had let down but he wondered why she would come to sit with him if she was pissed. He realized that she was probably there for support and this warmed his mood a little.

'I messed up.' He told her, leaning forward and hanging his head.

Kali smiled when she finally heard him speak... It was progress. "we all mess up... I could have happened to any of your teammates." she knew there was no point telling him she was sorry for him or making him feel bad. " there were a few critical errors during that game... YOurs just happened to come right at the end."

It hurt to see him so bummed out... He was her best friend and she hated when he felt down.

'Well, thanks for staying anyway' He said and gave a weak smile. 'It's more than Emily would do.' He was devastated that his girlfriend would walk out on him like that. Kali was supportive though, he knew that she was a lot more important.

'I dunno if I want to stay here much longer.' Hew told her as he looked glumly across the field. 'Do you wanna go somewhere?'

'I dunno really...' he replied. 'I just want to get out of here. He stood and she followed and they walked across the pitch towards the exit. 'I feel like getting coffee, but then I just want to go home.' He looked at her as she walked beside him with her hands in her pockets. 'Are you doing anything tonight?' He was in need of company in his situation.

Kali smiled, knowing how he must be feeling. "I've got no plans tonight..except to cheer up my best friend." she bumped him playfully. "Well we can grab a coffee and head back to your place if you wanna just kinda lay low for tonight?" she smiled at him as they reached the parking lot.

Tony felt good when she told him she also wanted to go back to his. He enjoyed her company and the quiet atmosphere would help to cheer him up.

"Yeah, that sounds great." He told her as a smile smile cracked upon his face.

She loved when he smiled. It made her happy when he was happy. "Did you drive or did you need a ride?" she looked around the parking lot for his car unsure if he had driven himself to the game.

"I was going to ride with Emily after the game. There was supposed to be a big victory party tonight." He shook his head. "I guess that's not going to happen now."

He looked sheepishly at Kali. "Do you mind driving? We can stop and I'll buy you an ice cream at the Freeze if you want..."

Kali smiled, nodding her head. "Sure. But I am totally taking you up on your offer for icecream."

They walked to Kali's car and she unlocked the doors. They climbed inside and she started the car. When the car started the music came blaring thru the speakers... It was a song she had sang numerous times at kareoke. She laughed shaking her head and she quickly turned it down, "Sorry.... guess I was in the zone earlier." she looked over at her best friend. It was sad when she saw him so down but then again, when was the last time they really got to spend any one on one time with eachother without his girlfriend around?...

"You should sing--I know you love that song. Besides, I like way your voice sounds. Maybe it'll cheer me up."

Tony was surprised: he felt like he shopped be angry at Emily for just leaving him like that, or at least sad that she couldn't care less that he was clearly upset about losing the game. But he wasn't. The truth was he was actually glad he was with Kali. He always felt pretty good when she was around--like it didn't matter if he made that play or not.

He looked over at her as she backed up, and was a little surprised to see her glowing as the early evening sun shone through her car window, lighting up her hair. He couldn't help but notice the line of her jawbone, the hollow below her ear.

"Thanks for hanging out with me tonight. It means a lot."

Kali laughed and shook her head at his singing comment. "don't wanna give you any more ammunition against me." she winked and backed the car out of the space and headed towards icecream. "I love spending time with you... We haven't really gotten any us time in a while... I was startin to think you were avoiding me."

"Avoiding you? Nah...well, maybe a little. Emily sometimes gets mad if we hang out." He gazed out the window. "It's stupid. Like she needs to be jealous of my best friend." Tony shook his head; the thoughts he was just having suggested that wasn't exactly true, and he needed to clear them from his head. Besides, we was still a little confused about his feelings for Emily.

"I can't believe she just left like that."

Kali nodded her head. She understood. "hey I get it... I mean that's why I haven't really tried to get you to hang out for a while... After the first three times you bailed or made an excuse I kinda figured something was up.". She patted his knew knowing I really was bugging him that his gf had just left like she did. "I'm sorry she left. I'm sure you would have liked for her to have stayed with you."

"You know what? I don't think I would have wanted to hang out with her. Sometimes I get so tired of the all-Emily show; I don't think I could have handled that tonight."

He looked out the window, thinking, and saw the liquor store up ahead. "Tell you what. Forget the ice cream. Let's get some beer and just get stupid tonight. I feel like getting crazy."

Kali smiled. Understanding how he felt. She laughed when he mentioned the liquor store. "alright... Drinks are probably more called for anyway." she pulled into the Parking lot.

"You wait here. I'll get us something and be right back."

Tony needed a few minutes to himself. He got out of the car and walked into the store, heading back to the beer coolers. He'd been friends with Kali forever; it was strange to find himself thinking about her in the way he suddenly was. Sure, she was attractive; yes, he'd checked her out in her swimsuit dozens of times. But checking her out had never made him feel what he was feeling in the car.

He looked over the six packs in the cooler and realized he wasn't really feeling beer. He grabbed a pack a pack almost at random, then moved toward what he really wanted. He grabbed a bottle of Maker's Mark and a six pack of Cokes. "Go big or go home," he thought.

He tossed his bags into the back of Kali's car and dropped into the front seat. "Let's do this!"

Kali laughed as she watched him run inside. She would take the alone time to take the butterflies. He had been her best friend for as long as she could remember but at some point she saw more between them.. But she kept the feelings deeply hidden she would never risk what they had for some weird fling. She took a calming breath. She laughed at herself and ran her finger thru her hair. She saw him coming out of the liquor store and smIled. His girlfriend was an idiot. If she was his girl........ She had to stop those thoughts.

He looked at Kali, who seemed strangely distracted. He pushed her thigh gently. "Um...you going to drive, or what?"

She laughed when his push brought her back down to earth. "yeah yeah yeah.... Look at you all bossy." she joked as she put the car into drive and drove to his house. She knew the route almost as well as to her own house. She pulled into the driveway and climbed out of the car.. The fresh air helped to distract her thoughts. They walked up to the door a d she followed him inside. "so what'd you buy us to drink this evening?"

"Beer, bourbon and Coke," he said, brandishing each in turn and setting them on the coffee table. "Help yourself."

He grabbed a glass from the kitchen, poured himself a generous two fingers of the Makers and some Coke, and sat down on the sofa. "This is exactly what I need after a shitty day like today," he said as he took a drink.

Kali laughed as she sat down on the couch watching him take his first drink. She grabbed one of the beers and took a long drink. "Well, you know I'm always here for you.... afterall, you are my best friend." she smiled as she looked over at him.... so besides getting wasted, you wanna watch a movie or what?"

"What I want is to get wasted and have crazy sex until I forget all about that stupid game." He looked into Kali's eyes, searching for any hint of her feelings. He held her gaze for a moment. "But Emily left, so that's not gonna happen. So, sure, let's find a movie on HBO or something. "

Kali almost chocked on her beer when he told her he wanted to have crazy sex. She played it off and laughed tossing the remote at him. "Well I'm sorry you don't get to have crazy sex with your girlfriend and that you're stuck with me instead." She settled back on the couch curling her legs up under her a little.
