Summer Camp

Henry whistled happily as he went about his work. Camp OK would be opening for another summer in a few hours and he was attending to the last minute details. He smiled as he thought about the lucky bunch of kids that would be coming to camp this year, whether they were return campers or first timers. Henry had gone out of his way to make sure everything was going to be perfect, just like all the years he spent here when he was younger. He looked over the checklist smiling as he did. Everything appeared well in order. They still didn’t have an archery instructor, but he had heard from a woman who said she was interested in the position and if she could shoot even halfway decently he’d hire her on the spot.

Henry rose from his desk, the paper work complete and began the final walk around before the buses arrived. He stopped and chatted for a little while with each staff member, helping the new counselors find their way when they needed it. He waved at David Bryant as he went by. They were lucky to have someone as talented as him to be the soccer coach at camp. He continued walking, stopping to have a few words with Alex Lesser, the new High Adventure instructor, making sure she still felt comfortable with the position. He had to admit he was a little nervous to put someone as young as her in charge of it, but she had proven herself an able leader over the last few years. His walkthrough met with no major snags and so he clapped his hands together happily, just enough time to meet the campers as they came in.

Henry smiled as the buses pulled up and the campers began piling out, filing into the main lodge for their orientation. Henry saw the nervousness on some faces, the excitement on others and even a few surly looking faces. He chuckled slightly, each batch always looked about the same, but by the time they were done at Camp OK everyone would be smiling. He followed the throng in, taking his place at the podium as everyone situated themselves. Once people had quieted down he cleared his throat. “Welcome to Camp OK campers!” He said happily, to mixed applause. “I’ll keep this short since long introductions can be boring. You were each assigned a cabin number when you registered for camp, and one of these counselors will match your number. Please find your counselor and they’ll tell you what to do next. We’ve got a great summer ahead of us!” He said with a big grin as he stepped down.

________________________________

Blest sighed heavily as he exited the bus. He'd had a two-hour ride from his hometown sitting next to some heavy kid with bad B.O. and a severe breathing problem. So while he was quite happy to finally get off the bus, he still wasn’t all that taken with the destination. Camp OK. He didn’t really want to be here, but his dad had made it quite clear that his last summer before college wasn’t going to be wasted. He could go to the camp that ‘made dad the man he is today’ or he could get a job. Pretty simple choice. He looked around, admitting grudgingly that the place did have a tranquil beauty to it. He grabbed his bag, hefting his belongings as he walked towards the main lodge where a group of older looking people, led by a man with a goofy grin on his face, was directing campers. His eyes widened as he caught site of some of the co-eds he’d be spending the summer with. Maybe it wasn’t quite a complete loss after all he thought smiling slightly.

He listened to the spiel, glad for its shortness and looked down at his number. 8, hmmm alright. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the large fellow he rode down next to was apparently a 6. He was a little disappointed to learn that they wouldn’t be co-ed bunks, but he hadn’t really held much hope that would be the case. He stood up, dragging his bag over to the counselor holding number 8, dropping it and sitting on it as he waited for the general confusion to clear itself out. Once everyone was situated his counselor stepped forward, taking them all in. “Hi, my name’s Mathew, I’m going to be your counselor for the summer.” The guy was pretty old, had to be at least 30, figures they’d need someone a little older to watch the teen crowd. Blest looked around the room again, it looked as if he was one of the older boys here, that could be good, establish dominance early. Not that he was a bully, but it never hurt. He thought smiling slightly. He listened as the rest of his cabin mates introduced themselves and did the same when so prompted. Finally he picked up his bag, heading out of the lodge towards the cabin they were to stay in. Blest sighed, trying to stay positive, make the best of this summer he thought smiling as they passed another group of girls.

"Ewwww... totally not cool." Nikki chimed as the bus came to a stop. Kids were rubbing against her left and right. Their grubby hands moving about to gather their bags from the overhead racks some from under their feet. Screams and cries of glee. Groans and moans of annoyance and uncertainty ranged throughout as they spilled out of the bus.

Nikki followed hooking her thumb in her pants belt hook. Flipping a stray bit of hair from her face she followed the group into the building where some camp instructor began his little speech. Thankfully it wasn't that long and they were all able to leave just as quickly.

Looking around, Nikki ducked low when her brother managed to peek out of the crowd but as promised he didn't acknowledge her and she did the same. Soon she went to check out who her camp counselor was. Being introduced and settled in for the most part she looked around as they walked past a group of boys, a few giggles kicking up from the throngs of girls she was walking with. They weren't half bad but she was't really here for that... these guys were babies anyway.

'Just great,' Julia thought as she rode into the camp on her BMW motorcycle. 'I knew I shouldn't have tried to take that short cut. I just hope being this late doesn't lose me the job.' She didn't really need the job, but it was summer, and she was already getting bored. She longed to spend the warm days outside, not cooped up in the city.

Julia parked her bike beside a group of cars, assuming these must belong to the staff, as the campers were piling off buses. She took off her helmet, ran her hand through her spiked hair and took a deep breath. She leaned against her bike, helmet clutched to her chest, and waited for the commotion to die down. She had seen a man yelling out instructions, and thought this was probably who she needed to approach. She rolled her neck, and heard every bone pop. She sighed.

Soon, the campers were headed off toward the cabins in small groups. 'Well, here goes,' she mumbled as she untied her longbow from the back of her bike. Julia headed toward the man she had seen orchastrating the confusion. "Hi," she said as she extended her hand to him. "I'm Julia Richardson. We spoke about the archery position."

Tommy O'Connell
18 years old, short curly brown hair, brown eyes, about 5'11 and a buck seventy. He's been coming to Camp Okeananbee every summer since he was ten years old. Tommy knew every group of trees, every shady grove, every little pond, all the good long trails through the few hundred acres of woodland and pastures that made up ole Camp Okeananbee.

He also knows all the routines, all the squeaky boards, all the shadiest routes to sneak around all through the night. He was going to make damn sure his buddies never get caught on their way to make out with the girls.

Make out. Who was Tommy kidding? He had some interesting Camp OK memories of his own...

IC
Tommy got off the bus for another summer at the Camp OK. It was going to be his last unless they gave him a job as a counselor next summer. He had just graduated from high school, but he was way excited about spending the summer at Camp OK. He didn't mind all the little childrens. He followed Group 8 to their cabin. He recognized several people from past summers, and he saw a lot of new faces, too. He recognized the cabin he and his group would be staying in; he'd stayed in this one a couple years before. Tommy followed the other boys into the cabin. He dropped his bag on a bunk and wondered how soon he'd be able to sneak away for a cigarette.

This Mathew guy was new. He hoped he would turn out to be cool and not have a stick shoved up his ass. He crossed his fingers and introduced himself to everyone.

Henry smiled as the kids went about organizing themselves before following their counselors back to their cabin. Good mix of kids this year, mostly preteens, eleven to thirteen year olds, but he'd seen a handful of older campers as well. They were the closest to full capacity they'd been in years. Nearly two hundred campers all told. It was shaping up to be a great summer. He smiled as he stepped down, answering a few questions the counselors had before they took their campers to the cabins. He smiled, preparing to head back to his office and take care of some more last second details when he saw the woman coming across the parking lot in front of the lodge. He smiled slightly as he saw her unstrap a bow from the back of her bike. He stepped forward, offering his hand as she introduced herself. "Of course, Ms. Richardson, I hope you didn't have too much trouble finding the place." He said with a friendly tone. "Let me show you the archery range."

_______________

Blest looked around as he entered the cabin. Standard layout it appeared to him, five sets of double bunks arranged along the walls of the cabin. "Alright campers, feel free to pick out your bunks, free range for wherever you want, but no fighting please!" He said as two of the other guys, couldn't be older than fourteen, rushed for the same top bunk. Blest shrugged and walked to the rear of the cabin, throwing his bag on the top of a double bunk. He introduced himself to the person who took the bunk below him and unpacked his sleeping bag and pillow he had brought, they provided him with bedding, but it never hurt to be careful. "Alright, we've got half an hour to unpack and then there'll be orientation in the main lodge, so feel free to take some time and have a look around camp, but make sure you're back in time." Blest nodded his agreement to the counselor and stowed his bag under his bed, walking out of the cabin into the summer sun, smiling as he looked around. He'd do his best to be positive about the whole thing, and as long as all the days were like this it shouldn't be too hard. Smiling he trooped off down the trail, just wandering, letting his memory clear the cobwebs as the layout of the camp began coming back to him.

"Just call me Julia," she said as she shook his hand. "I assume you are Henry Kellis?" She smiled at him. She thought he was a bit older than she, but it was difficult to tell his exact age. He obviously took very good care of himself, and right now, she was thinking she could take good care of him too.

He led her to the archery range. She took her bow out of its case, strung it, and placed the arrows tip first into the ground in a single file row. She began shooting, one after the other unitl all six where near the center of the target a hundred yards away. "Hmmm," she muttered, as if to herself, "missed the bullseye with three of them." She shrugged, well it had been a long time since she had had the oppurtunity to practice.

Henry the Happy camp director

Henry blushed slightly as he realized he'd forgotten to introduce himself. "Oh yes sorry how forgetful of me. You can just call me Henry. I'm the Camp Director, have been for a few years now, ever since the old director stepped down. Been coming to this camp for as long as I can remember, ever since I was ten. I love this place, it really has had a huge impact in my life.... I'm sorry I'm rambling" He said chuckling slightly. He always tended to be a little nervous around women, especially attractive ones. They came up to the archery range and he showed her around before letting her show him what she could do.

He whistled in appreciation as she grouped her arrows together on the target. "Wow that's some nice shooting..." He said smiling. "Well... we're pretty short handed as far as archery goes, and it's usually a pretty popular activity around here, so I think I can probably safely say you got the job." He said, offering his hand to her.

Julia smiled at Henry as he offered her his hand again. She squeezed it ever so slighty as she replied, "Great. Just show me where I'm to stay, and I'll get settled in."

She unstrung her bow, retrieved her arrows, and walked back to Henry. "So boss man.....boss me." she winked.

Henry the Happy camp director

Henry stumbled slightly at her comment as they walked back towards the main lodge. He chuckled slightly, trying to laugh off his nervousness. "Ummm you'll be staying in the female staff cabin." He said as he led her across the grounds. "That's the shower house over there, and the female cabin is right here." He said as he led her up to it. "No males allowed inside so I'll be leaving you here." He said with a small smile. "We've got an orientation meeting in about half and hour at the main lodge, so take some time, get settled in and I'll see you there." He smiled and turned, walking away.

Tommy slid out the door as soon as he could. All the nature was his to romp through for the summer. He couldn't wait to get started, but he knew he would have to wait, as the Orientation Event was in the Main Lodge in fifteen minutes. Plenty of time, though, to sneak off for a cigarette behind one of the girls' cabins...

He wandered through the woods for a minute, wondering who he was going to run into this summer. He wondered if any of his old makin-out-down-by-the-lake-summer-girlfriends were back at Camp OK for another summer...

David Bryant

Talk about culture shock, David thought as he watched the horde, and it was horde of kids passing by as bus after bus pulled up. The closest he'd ever gotten to this summer camp thing was a one week stay at the Bobby Charlton Football Academy which was a one week intense football focused stay.

This , well this was something different his entire experience of the American Summer Camp obsession came from movies and as hard as he was trying not to judge reality against movies it wasn't easy.

He'd been assigned a cabin mostly of early teenage boys....old enough to not need a baby sitter young enough to actually do as they were meant to if he had to put his foot down and that was one thing David hoped to avoid.

He had a list of those who had expressed an interest in football and it was mostly female, in a way that didn't surprise him America's real football strenght was with its females who along with the Germans were the best in the world .

And speaking of females there was a serious talent pool here, it was just a pity most of the beautiful females were campers.Okay they looked over 18 but they were campers, surely there were rules about that sort of carry on.

Nikki groaned again as she went to her cabin to claim a lower bunk in the back of the cabin. Most of the other kids were excited to see their friends again as a group of girls went on about their lives before camp of the current year. Rolling her eyes she settled her bag on the bed leaving it there in case some snobby girl got it in her head to take her bed.

Satisfied she decided she'd go check out the grounds for a bit. A few guys passed her by as she got well on her way into a brisk walk. Most of the boys she'd passed were too young and not of interest to her. Sighing she began wondering if this were a good idea at all. She could have been with friends, making some memories. After all she'd been a little too uptight during her school years, she didn't want to start college the same way.

Finally coming up to a field she noticed a bunch of kids kicking a ball around. Smiling she could get into that herself. Standing off to the side to watch them she wasn't much in the mood to play being that she didn't have but a little while before orientation but it was still a treat to be able to explore.

Alexis

IC: One of these days I'm going to be in the staff cabin and not a camper cabin, oh well at least I got my dream job this year. "All right let me begin with a few key safety points. First avoid walking around alone, if you are going some where ask some one to go with you. If you do find yourself lost hug a tree and we will find you. At some point this week we will have a fire drill. Blah blah Blah." I found myself ignoring the speech even as a gave it. The problem was I had no good ideas on how to make it entertaining; of coarse the councilors I had at other camps never solved this problem either. In any case I cared less for this speech then the campers. "And that is how you know what activity you should be doing."

I led the varied precession of girls and young women around the camp. I suppose the group tended more to girls then young women, judging by the giggles, which throngs of girls tend to do. The boys weren't half bad for their age, but women even young women know they are babies.

Once the group had reached the cabin the girls settled to unpacking and exploring with varying degrees of interest. Some where emptying there bags into the provided foot lockers, setting flashlights and other items on their beds for latter on when they'd need them; others, such as a older girl in the back, simply set their bag on the bunk they wanted and left. I waited by the door for a bit making sure none of the young campers would fight over a bunk or some other stupid thing. My gear had already been unpacked at a bed near the door.

Content that the girls would handle themselves I decided to go around back and relax until I had to work again. The cabin was the last one, or so it seemed, since its back was next to a heavily wooded area. At the back of the cabin was to rarely used trials, one led to the male cabins, and one led to the male and female staff cabins, both sets of cabins couldn't be seen from the spot unless you knew what to look for. Around the back I found a familiar face.

"Hey Tom." Tom had been coming to camp OK long before I joined the staff, but after four years I naturally knew him, albeit mostly as a casual acquaintance and occasional conversation during lunch. "So are you going to join staff next year?"

Blest smiled as he wandered the camp, most of the layout coming back to him. He hadn't been here in what felt like forever, but all the old memories came flowing back. He walked over to the small lake, smiling as he watched the counselor's and instructors getting the canoes ready for the runs they'd take down the river that drained out of it. He walked over to the rope swing, looking at it, remembering the mild concussion he'd gotten the first time he'd ever worked up the bravery to go off the thing.

He wandered back across the camp, through the main yard, past the giant firepit where they held bonfires and sing-a-longs each year, up past the archery range where he saw the Camp Director talking with a woman holding a bow, probably the archery instructor. He walked over to the field and saw a group of kids already playing around there, kicking a soccer ball around. Soccer it seemed was going to be the big team sport this year, and he heard they'd even gotten a hotshot player to come and instruct this year. Blest would have to consider signing up when he had the opportunity. He was about to turn and leave again when he saw a girl standing off to the side watching the game. He walked up next to her, checking her out as he did, and he liked what he saw. "Hi." He said simply as he came to stop besides her, watching the game as she did.

Julia Richardson, archery instructor

Julia laughed to herself as Henry left her at the female staff cabin. He seemed a bit old to be so shy. She watched him leave. 'My, my, he has a nice ass,' she thought. She sighed and entered the cabin and looked around. No one was here. She found a bunk in the back corner and placed her bow on it. She went back to her bike to retrieve her duffle bag.

Once Julia had unpacked her few belongings into the locker, she stood on the cabin's porch. She took a deep breath. The air smelled so good. It was wonderful to be outdoors again. She decided to walk around a bit before orientation, just to get acquainted with the layout. She passed a few groups of teens being ushered around by older teens. She passed a few individuals just standing around talking. 'Good,' she thought. 'Maybe this isn't one of those strict places that monitors your every minute.' Julia headed toward the main lodge and orientation.

IC: I waited for his reply, and he took another puff at the cigarette. I wonder what he is thinking. "On another note, you know I have to ask you not to smoke behind a cabin like that. You know I could care less but could you do it out of view so I don't get into trouble?"

Tommy coughed a bit, and then crushed out the cigarette on the bottom of his boot. "Some habits are hard to kick," he shrugged, and tossed the butt in a nearby trashbin. "I'm happy you've come back for this summer. And yeah, I was thinking about applying for a job for next summer. It sure would be nice. How are your campers so far?"

Alexis

IC: "The same as always. No one is bugging me yet, but I can spot a few that probably will before the end." I looked up at the sky for a bit. "I'm guessing your going to use this trail to lead boys into the girls cabins again." I paused a bit. "I'll probably just turn a blind eye like always. Isn't amazing how many of the trails here no one knows about?"

"It's not that they don't know about them," Tommy replied. "It's all just a matter of timing. And distraction, if need be."

"A blind eye, eh? And here I was getting all kinds of plans together for how to keep you distracted from the romping in your cabin..." he smiled at her. He looked at his watch. "Hey, it's almost time for that stupid orientation meeting. Why do they make us go to that, year after year? It's not like it's ever any different."

Alexis

IC: "Well they make me go to it because it looks good for all the staff to be there. You have to go to it so the staff doesn't suffer alone." I checked my watch to see exactly how long I had. "Well I guess I'll see you there."

Tommy

"Well, hey, it's just right across the field, let's walk together for a minute. So... you're in charge of high adventure, huh? Do we have to harvest the weed ourselves?" When he saw the expression on her face, he quickly added: "I'm joking, I'm joking, I would never..."

"Rock climbing and extreme hiking and all that, right? That's my favorite, through all the years I've been here. Can't wait to see the new climbing walls."

Mich sat at the docks, resting her feet in the water with a smile. She had dropped off her bags after the bus ride, her legs absolutely killing her... and the water looked just so inviting. She wasn't sure about just diving in, though. A little soak and splash wasn't bad.

She glanced over her shoulder to the ongoings of the rest of the camp, making a slight face. Why had she let those guys talk her into this? She hated camping. She'd rather be at a waterpark or something. But stuck in a cabin, on a bunkbed, for weeks? She just prayed they were honest about the cute advisors.

IC: "It was a clever joke, I suppose." I considered the walls, I probably should go check them. "Yeah, I look forward to seeing them too. Still, I am not so sure they had to tear down the old ones." I had heard adults and various people say the old wall was unsafe, and while the boards were now a bit on the spongy side, I'd say it still had a few years left in it. Oh well if you need a new rope every 3 years regardless of wear and tare, why not replace the tower every ten years.

"I need to go check on the wall some time today, you want to go test it with me later on?"

David Bryant

He'd given his wee speech to the boys under his charge, it was all stock standard stuff 'keep it clean keep it tidy and don't do stuff you shouldn't'.

Good bunch of lads most of whom seemed to know each other from past camps. David was under no illusion , they were going to do things behind his back that he really ought to know about, but as long as it didn't involve drugs alcohol and other crap kids there age shouldn't be doing then all would be good, as long as they didn't get caught.

It was on to the field next to watch kids just kicking around , the orientation was scheduled soon and David for one did not want to miss it, mainly because if anyone here had zero experience of an American summer camp it was him.

It took only a few minutes for David to judge the gulf in abilities between kids in front of him, some would have not looked out of place at any of the hundreds of football camps back home, while some, yeah some were toe-hacking a one true indicator of someone who knew nothing about the beautiful game.

Well that was what he was here for ,to help the toe-hackers learn to kick a football and the skilled learn to expand their overall game.

For now he let the kids have there kick around ,the formal programme would start in the morrow.

"Yeah, that'd be great. The rock wall is fun. I bet we can have some good climbing routes up in the next day or two. It's not hard. It should be pretty easy to move all the holds around with a good power screw."

He took another look at the instructor. She was an athletic little fox. Great, hard body... he shook his head. You oughta focus on the girls your age. Trying to hook up with a counselor is just asking for trouble...

"Wanna head down there after orientation, take a look at what we're working with before it gets too dark?"
