Pearl Barrows lost her father at a very young age; when he died in a farming accident. He was up in a loft and fell down to the cement floor under him when he slipped on loose hay. He died instantly letting Pearl with her mother and very few memories of him. It took pearl a long time to realize that he wasn’t walking through that door ever again and her mother made sure she knew it, repeating it over and over again calling him a bastard for leaving them broke and lost.

For months Pearl sat out on the steps of their now falling apart small farm house waiting for her daddy to come home, day after day and every night she would hear her mother’s voice screeching out cursing about him and how stupid Pearl was to be waiting there everyday for nobody. Finally after standing at the end if the driveway for days at a time from afternoon to dusk a truck pulled in, and Pearls heart raced as she ran to it, getting closer she slowed down and realized it wasn’t him and the driver was just turning around.

Pearl fell to her knees and leaned forth and just cried every tear she had built inside her, building up for months. Lifting herself up she never looked back over her shoulder again, she never sat on the porch waiting another minute for him to return home, her mother was right he was never returning and that handful of memories was all she would have left and a picture that sat on her dresser of him in his western wear and cowboy hat. Even with the little bit left in her mind pearl was certain her daddy loved her a lot, and within those small wisps of memories he would live for as long as she could keep then safe and familiar.

Her mother never found another man to replace her daddy, she never found one but she had found many. None of them stayed around long even though she was a very attractive woman but she wasn’t a happy one so attracting them was never the problem it was keeping them that was the issue.

Over the years of Pearl growing up there was numerous men, she couldn’t even keep track of them till the day Jessie walked into their live. Mother met him at the local tavern, she seemed happy enough with him, after all so far he lasted a month and that beat the one night stands for sure and soon became a permanent fixture.

Jessie and her mother agreed they would move in together…in Texas. They wanted to move Pearl to a small town right outside where Jessie grew up at and as it turned out that’s where Pearl lost everything and gained nothing. At this time Pearl was in her senior year and it was just the beginning and after eleven years in the same school they refused to let her finish her year out since it seemed so far off. So they packed up the house letting daddy’s things behind and left Oklahoma for good ol’ Texas.

Welcome was a small town, the trailer park they moved to was in the middle of nowhere. On the first day at the park she wandered along a dead-end road that cut between trailers lined up like piano keys. The trailer park was a dusty grid of dead-end streets, with a recently built loop that circled around the left side. Each home sat on its own concrete slab, dressed inn a skirt of lattice or aluminum. A few trailers had small patches of yard before them, some featured plants with bright blossoms on a brown shredded bark background others had nothing but weeds.

A few days had gone by and Pearl was settling in slowly, thought there really wasn’t much to settle into she made the best out of the situation. Her new school wasn’t anything she expected then again she had no expectations. Since driving wasn’t an option and they only had Jessie’s truck she walked down the dirt road and took the school bus to and from school. Being the new person she sat quietly and stayed to herself the only one that spoke to her was flip named because all he did was flip a coin over and over for no reason what so ever just for the sake of something to do.

He was the same age as her and he made pearl laugh all the time. He lived at the upper top part of the trailer park and had been there for over seven years with his father. Pearl never asked about his mother she left things alone and figured if he wanted to speak about it then he would but she’d never push for information.

The first month had passed and the late Saturday afternoon sun was as round and white as a paper plate hanging in the deep blue sky. Heat seemed to come from above and below, it felt as if it rose from the cracked dry earth as Pearl stepped outside and down off the porch in her bare feet.

Pearl knew that she needed to get out of the trailer park as soon as she graduated, she wanted more I life, a lot more and would get it at any cost she told herself. She sighed and tucked the rent check in the pocket of her cut off jean shorts.

The sun was felt on the exposed flesh of her long toned legs as well as her upper body except where a purple bikini top covered most of her rounded perky breasts. Her long brown hair was pulled back into a swaying ponytail off the back of her head freeing her sharp doll features and her feline sparkling deep green bedroom eyes.

The walk to the ranch where Jacob Potter lived was a long eight miles. He managed the trailer park for the owner which Pearl had no idea who it was but she was told he lived close on a 250 acre ranch and dabbled in oil, cattle, horse racing and everything else imaginable that made him money. He was said to have lived in a mansion, one that was like a maze and you could get lost in it for days. Rumors went round and round about him.

He was said to have been married four times and each wife got younger than the previous before and the last being twenty-three years old. He was said to be very handsome, built and his sexual desires ran ramped from being overly romantic to super kinky but then again everything was hear say. Pearl learned to never judge another unless you know first hand its true and that was something she lived by.

To entertain her log walk in the sweltering heat Pearl imagined herself living the high life with all the riches. She could see herself wrapped in minks and pearls wearing the finest dresses from Paris, heels that were one of a kind like the dresses and earrings that were made…crafted just for her. Lost in her own world and about two miles behind her she zoned from her fantasy world to the real when she heard Flip call out to her….”Pearl…o’ glistening exquisite Pearl!”

She smiled and turned looking to Flip come riding up to her on his bike. Flip was part Mexican, part Italian and part who-knows-what else he claimed. His skin was dark tanned, his body built. He wore nothing but a pair of weathered wranglers and dirt-caked scuffed combat boots. He reached up and raked his fingers through his coal black hair, sweat beaded upon his flesh as he smiled a white pearly smile to her and she noticed his deep dark eyes danced whenever he seen her.

“Heya Flip...” Pearl responded as she stopped walking.

“Where ya headed to?” Flips asked her as he leaned forth peeking down in her bikini top checking out the swells of her breasts. He had already checked out her tight fine ass when he approached her causing a stirring in his jeans.

“Momma needed me to take the rent check to the ranch.” She replied as she placed her hand up over her brow shading her eyes from the bright sun. He looked her over and noticed how tan she was getting and how it accented her brown-reddish hair and bright hazel eyes. He loved the few freckles across her nose and the light dots that danced upon her cheeks.

“Man Pearl you don’t and I mean don’t want to go there alone if the old letch is around.” Flip said shaking his head. “He’s a pig …he hits on every female no matter what they look like. Stories about him are really bad, he’s bad news. You can’t go see him alone, I’ll take you get on my bike handlebars.”

Pearl laughed and shook her head, “You know I hate rumors Flip but I’ll take the ride since it’s so hot out and you can play my body guard.” Pearl said as she laughed and then climbed up on his handlebars. He took her all the way to the ranch; she jumped off as he rested his bike against a stone pillar at the beginning of the driveway. He ran his hand through his hair once again and sighed as Pearl looked to him. “What? You can wait here I’ll be right back and I’ll be fine Flip please don’t worry…”

“No I’ll go along with you…” Flip said as he looked her lithe body over noticing how her breasts stood out firmly upon her chest.

“Flip, wait here I’ll be back real quick…” and with that said pearl turned and walked up the long macadam driveway to the ranch house. She hummed softly as she struggled slightly up the hill and watched as the roof of the ranch house came into view. She stopped and dropped her head with her hands at her sides as she breathed deeply.

Flip watched her walk and once again he eyed every bit of her lean body. He was in absolute lust and love with Pearl and she didn’t even sense it the slightest. She was beautiful a natural beauty with everything in all the right places and a body that could drop a man to his knees with the sway of her hips. He watched her feeling his cock stir in his worn jeans until she went out of sight as she walked past the top of the hill. He knew she would be in from trouble, but he had a feeling she needed to find out for her self what he meant about the old perverted guy that had groped, fondled and practically raped all the females from the trailer park and a few from in town.

Pearl lifted her head and finished walking up the driveway; with the second smaller hump behind her the full view of the ranch house cant in sight as did the biggest, longest black limousine she ever saw. Pearl was in awe, she had never seen one up close, and everything on it shined like either a black pearl or a diamond as the sun hit it.

Getting closer she watched as the ranch door opened and a well dressed male walked out and then stopped as he turned to the short, hefty sloppily dressed man standing in the doorway. They were total opposites in looks as Pearl slowed her walk as she just observed the two and didn’t wish to interrupt.

It was too late as she watched both their heads turn and look at her; look was the wrong word and the correct one would be stare. Pearl felt very uncomfortable as she walked closer and closer, she lowered her head and eyes until she was about five feet from them then lifted it and looked to the short fat balding man and then the taller handsome older gentleman.

“Whatcha’ want girlie this is private property…” Potter barked at her as his eyes ran up and down her form taking every bit in especially her tits and crotch, her long legs were great as well he thought.

“I’m…I ...have the rent check…” Pearl said in a soft whisper and lifted her eyes looking quickly towards the well dressed man once. He smiled at Pearl; his teeth were perfect like the rest of him. She returned the smile not knowing that at that moment Pearl’s life was about to change whether she wanted it to or not.

“Gimmie the check girl and get going along...” the short fat rude man said as she handed him the check and turned walking away. She stopped and turned around and looked to the well dressed male and smiled once more before she went along her merry way back down the long driveway where her friend was still waiting for her to return.

“Did he try and grope you or anything?” Flips asked.

“No, but he did have an unpleasant odor about him but he wasn’t alone, there was another man there well dressed with one of those limousines.” She replied back standing there at the end of the drive with a smile upon her face, more a grin of the Cheshire cat.

The young well dressed man had been having a rather intense conversation with Mr. Potter. “Jacob you bastard. If you don’t stop harassing every thing with a pair of tits that walks up here to pay rent I’m going to find someone else to tend to my affairs here. You drag my name through the mud and I’ll sue you for every bit of money you’ve ever made, plus what your grand kids will make. Do. I.Make. Myself. Clear?!”

The foul looking little troll of a man gave a weak nod and looked as if he were about to be sick. Good! The little bastard already had cops here twice! Jason could have throttled him. It was just about then the good for nothing Potter noticed something and Jason turned his head toward the sight. Now he saw what made the other man gape. Striding toward them was a regular trailer park princess. The girl sported little in the way of covering. As a matter of fact, what she wore gave a very pleasing peek at her assets.

Jason observed the interaction with her and potter in mere silence. Allowing himself ample time to watch her. She smiled at him, a shy smile that nearly stopped his heart. Something about her smile. It was very innocent, but it was also come hither, inviting. She was a young woman coming into her own and learning about her charms and how to use them. She had tried to use them on him! He chuckled to himself. What an adorable, very attractive little girl. His interest had been perked.

He heard potter breathing heavily, apparently that man had his own machinations in his head. The girl turned to smile again, then vanished behind the hill. Jason turned to potter and his arms came up and his hands grip the grimy shirt that barely covered potters bulk. “Listen to me you piece of horse dung. I want to hear no more complaints about your lechery. If you are going to take a girl to your bed you had best make sure she wants it. And I definitely better not see you touch a hair on that girls head or they will never find your body of this I promise you.”

The man stammered apologies and assurances that he wouldn’t touch another girl ever again. Shaking his head Jason turned his back on him and stalked away toward the limo. Who was he going to get to replace Potter? The man would slip sooner or later and he really could not afford a scandal. Not when he was so close to closing this new deal.

Muttering angrily to himself he slipped into the limo and the driver began a slow crawl away. The deal slipped into his mind and everything else was forgotten for a time. It was however not long before that little girl and her friend came up in the window and Jason called for the driver to stop. Slowly pulling to a stop the limo settled near the dark boy and the red headed girl who’s body just wouldn’t say no.

The tinted window came down and the sun glistened off Jason’s blond hair. He peered out of the window, then at the pair, then up at the sun and grimaced. “Hello there. My name is Mr. Steward. I own the parks and the ranch. I was under the impression your parents would be mailing payments, or bringing themselves. I had no idea they were sending kids this whole distances. That’s nearly ten miles give or take. Why don’t the both of you hop in and I’ll get you home, then I’ll see if I can’t address this issue.” There was an aura of command radiating from him like the sun gave off heat. People around him just wanted to please him simply because he always seemed in control. It was hard to deny him, if he asked something reasonable. He saw Flips bike and nodded. “My driver can put that in the trunk for you young man.”

The trailer park was not the typical slums like most places were. Jason learned the lesson early on in his young career that happy people were more productive. They worked harder, and they produced more, they also stayed longer if they were your tenants. This land was farm land and many of the people who lived here worked the land in exchange for wages, which then mostly was given back in rent. He made sure people had reasonable accommodations, and no one let their place slip too badly into disrepair. All in all, he had a reputation for being a pretty stand up guy, if not for having a faulty taste in women. His reputation of course with nothing compared to potter, the dirty bastard.

He did a good job of schooling his features. Part of his job, what made him such a successful man was being able to read people at a snap. He had seen how the boy looked at the girl. Not that he could blame them. The boy was like a guard dog, had he just asked the girl, it would have more than likely been unpleasant. So he was careful to not pay too much attention to either.

He still noticed hesitation in the young man and he stood to get out of the limo, stretching out his hand. The wind blew a cloud of dust across the barren landscape, but Jason seemed not to notice. Dust stuck to his finely cut black suit, but he paid it no mind. He was no stranger to dirt and hard work. He wasn’t always loaded. “It’s not every day kids get this kind of offer. I won’t hurt you guys. Scouts honor. “ He extended his hand to the young Hispanic boy. Maybe the offer of a hand would put the young boy at ease.

The truth of his own relationships were not far off. His first wife was a gold digging slut who drifted from man to man whomever had the biggest wallet. Jason had picked her out quickly in their marriage, and cut all ties, cleverly distributing his assets before the divorce, so that she got little more than the clothing on her back. His second wife was a willful woman who just would not satisfy him in bed. She seemed afraid of sex all together. That was a neatly wrapped up little annulment. He saw potential in this young woman, a woman of that age, who was malleable he could form her into what he wanted. He could take her from trailer park princess, to queen, his queen. The idea sent thrills coursing through his body, he felt his heart race with anticipation. Schooling his features however he did not let it show.

He would have to be patient of this were going to work. Much the same as in business. There were times to be bold, and times to hold your cards close to your chest. Right now he held the king of hearts clutched to his breast, and only slowly would he tip his hand, until it was too late for the young woman to know what happened. He almost always got what he wanted, and in this case he would settle for nothing less.

The tires sounded as the limo came down the long broken up macadam drive, pearl turned her head feeling her ponytail come around and slap against her face as she turned her body back around and watched the limo stop at the end of the drive where her and Flip were. Pearl expected the car to just pull out onto the gravel dirt road but it didn’t.

She watched as the window began to slower, she could feel Flip step closer to her as if he were her guardian or a big brother of sorts needing to guard her. Pearl made eye contact with the blonde haired man once again, and smiled to him a warm smile that was as bright as the Texas sun. “Hello there. My name is Mr. Steward. I own the parks and the ranch. I was under the impression your parents would be mailing payments, or bringing themselves. I had no idea they were sending kids this whole distances. That’s nearly ten miles give or take. Why don’t the both of you hop in and I’ll get you home, then I’ll see if I can’t address this issue.” He said to them both in a soft voice.

Pearl was able to get a really good look at him as they made eye contact, she felt smitten with him immediately from just the way he stared into her eyes. His eyes were beautiful and his lips looked warm and inviting. Her mother used to read romance novels late at night to pearl when she was little and if there was ever a man that stepped out from one it was him. “I don’t mind the walk…” pearl said as she watched him look past her to Flip.

“My driver can put that in the trunk for you young man.” He said looking at flip’s bike. Pearl twisted her upper body just enough to look over her shoulder to her friend and as he looked back he could tell she really wanted top take the ride in the limousine. Pearl watched as he went to open the limo door, she stepped back giving him room and watched him intently. He stretched out his hand to Flip and she prayed Flip would at least shake it and he did. “It’s not every day kids get this kind of offer. I won’t hurt you guys. Scouts honor.”

He would be able to tell that Flip wasn’t a lazy kid, his skin was dark from the hot sun, and his hands showed he was used to doing manual labor. Flip had been working odd jobs since he was a young teen to help his father out with bill and his little sister. He lost his mom when his little sister was born and has been helping raise her since day one she came into the world. His father wasn’t much help, he turned to the bottle and pearl could relate with her mother doing the same with her father dying, but each kid had manners and both were polite.

“I’ll ride my bike back but thanks for the offer,” Flip said as he looked at pearl giving her this look only she might understand.

Pearl sighed softly, “I’m sorry it wouldn’t be right of me if I took the offer. He was kind enough to bring me down I think it would be rude if I didn’t return back home with him. I really thank you Mr. Steward. It was a pleasure to meet you.” Pearl smiled and turned away not wanting to show she was upset that Flip wouldn’t take the offer of a ride. Flip nodded in the man’s direction and got on the bike catching up to Pearl where she stopped and she straddled the front tire and lifted herself up to sit on the handlebars and Flip peddled them back up the dusty road in the sweltering heat.

She could hear the car drive down the road without even looking back; pearl gripped the handlebars of the bike and didn’t say a word the whole ride back to the trailer park. She jumped off the bike when he stopped at the sidewalk to her trailer. Pearl turned at the door and looked to flip, “thanks for the ride” she said and went inside. She was quiet for the rest of the evening; her mother asked what was wrong and pearl just told her it was nothing.

Inside the trailer was hotter than outside, pearl lay there in bed tossing and turning, she stripped her nightgown and sighed softly looking at the ceiling as the local radio station played a block of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Pearl sang along with the song, as her mind drifted, she wondered what rumors were true about Mr. Steward; he looked so nice and seemed pleasant. Finally sleep found Pearl and before she knew it she could hear the water running from the shower, she yawned as she got from bed, stretching as she began to come to life.

Pearl hitched a ride with the neighbor woman Miss. Mills and headed into town, every Saturday she went along for the ride. Miss Mills would do her grocery shopping while Pearl window shopped and looked for a job. Each time it she heard the same thing, no experience or not hiring and after a bit Pearl felt a little piece of her future slip right through her long slender fingers.

Looking down at her watch she had an hour left before she was to meet back up with Miss. Mills, and with five dollars left in her pocket pearl decided to treat herself to a caffé mocha in the local coffee house, a place she enjoyed twice a month.

Once she had her hot foamy drink she sat out of the way in a back corner and watched the people walk by the window, every now and then she’d get a smile from a passerby and offer on back. She got to know one of the middle aged waitresses there who would slip her one or two chocolate orange biscotti cookies whenever she worked and would sit and chat with pearl on her break. She always said to pearl if there ever come an opening she would give pearl a recommendation.

Pearl found comfort in the café, it had air conditioning and magazines to browse while enjoying your time there, she preferred to look at the travel magazines telling her self one day she would see these places all over the world, her dreams kept her feeling alive, giving her something to grab a hold of and a goal to shoot for. She turned from the window and browsed the magazine letting time pass her by till she had to meet for her ride back home.

Needless to say he thought he had sold the young woman on the ride ,and the boy as well, though it appeared he was wrong in this instance. The young man politely refused, though he did accept the hand shake. Jason took his hand and gave a firm shake with a smile. Though he was slightly shocked at the refusal he looked unruffled. Never a sign that he was disappointed. He gave them both a nod.

“fair enough. It’s good to see young people with a sense of loyalty and responsibility. I admire that, I truly do. Take care of yourselves and maybe I will see the two of you around.”

A final smile and he slipped himself back into the car. He gave pearl a very quick once over, as if committing her figure to his memory and the limo slowly pulled away. He sank back into the seat heavily as the car pulled off. He wasn’t very frequently refused. He could have sworn he saw a sparkle in that girls eye. Yet maybe loyalty to her little friend had truly kept her there. He knew a disappointed set of the shoulders when he saw it. She wanted to come, he was sure of it. He was in something of a foul humor for the rest of the day. It seemed to drag on, and even getting news of some head way with this deal he had been working on didn’t seem to lighten his mood. He had found something he wanted, and it had slipped through his fingers like sand in an hour glass. Not a thing in the world he could do about it either. Damn!

That night sleep came slowly. He was tense, his shoulders seemed to be six separate different knots. It was a problem lately. All the stress he was under was building up. As he settled into his large bed he let out a deep sigh and felt several tell tale pops. With a groan he closed his eyes. Note to self, schedule a rub down. It wasn’t just the stress that was getting to him. He was a young man still, in good shape, and extremely well to do. No one shared his bed. Women who had or thought they deserved money were so… hollow. So superficial. So self absorbed. It make him sick! He had come from a background much like that of those kids he met today. He had to work hard for what he wanted, nothing was handed to him. He had a very down to earth mentality. His house was big, and was fit with luxury. Yet nothing was overly wasteful. More capital put in your house meant less you had to play with. A large brick house set on a hill with a man made pond in the back. The house was even already there, it was on the tail end of one of the nicer sets of property he owned. The water was maintained manually, because there were times when the unforgiving Texas sun baked the land and rain was not felt.

He felt restless, and he could peg it easily. That girl’s eyes were in his head every time he closed his. He felt something stir in him, besides the monster in his pants. Something tugged at his heart, maybe even his soul. There was something about that girl. She had the look of a flower that had weathered terrible storms, had been beaten down and trampled, but was just looking for that one drop of water and a ray of light so she could bloom. Not in a physical sense of course, she was already a blossoming young woman. His sleeping pants tightened just thinking about that tight little figure in the bikini top. It was something in the way she looked at him. She was meant for a brighter future than to be trailer park bound.

He sighed. He never even got her name.

He couldn’t keep it up forever. Even thoughts of pearl could not keep sleep from coming all night. A long day, and the promise of another to come found him sleeping. One dream in particular was extremely vivid.
He pulled up to old fat potters house. The sun was beating the ground mercilously. He stepped out of the limo and strode to the door. Dark slacks clung to him as a wind that felt as if it were blown out of the bowels of hell whipped his frame. He had shed the coat, to show just how uncomfortable he was in the tyrannical heat. Knocking on the door he waited a handful of seconds. No sound, no reply at all. He muttered under his breath something about a drunkard who was about to lose his job. Another knock, this time louder, more aggressive. Still no damned answer. Alright this was getting stupid. It was his property after all. He yanked the screen door open with force.

The rickety thing gave a creak, then a snap as the rusted spring that held it together came apart with the force. Striding into the room he looked around. The curtains were pulled to, the house was a slovenly mess. Beer cans, stale food, and a hand full of animals darting around in alarm. A dog strutted past Jason with a whimper. Then he heard a sound. It sounded like sobbing. Dread gripping him, he strode through three rooms, following the sound of that voice. A voice he knew even in his dreams. He stood there in the hall way, looking on as shock and anger seared him to the bone. There was his precious little angel on her knees. Face bruised, tears streaming down her cheeks. Potter the old bastard was above her, pants around his ankles. A swollen little knob of a cock hanging out. His hand was raised, having just struck the girl across the cheek. Jason felt like he had been struck in the stomach. He wanted to vomit, he wanted to shoot fire out of his eyes. His vision clouded red, and though shattered like so much broken glass. He crossed the room in three steps and picked the much bigger potter up by his dirty shirt and slammed him against the wall. Three words left his lips with spittle and rage, like an arrow hissing through the air. “I warned you”

He drew back his hand and clenched his fist so hard he felt his bones pop….

He shot awake, covered in sweat and feeling in much need of a shower. The clock only showed 5 in the morning. Might as well get an early start.

A little while later he found himself down at a little café. Walking toward the front door he stuffed the keys in his pocket. His driver had the day off today so he had driven himself. He really could use some coffee. A headache gently nagged at his temples. He strode in wearing surprisingly normal clothing. A pair of snug fitting jeans, and a sleeveless dark blue shirt that hugged his chest lightly. He walked to the counter to smile at the young woman behind it. “Hey there Emma, how you doin’ today? I need my usual if you don’t mind?” No flirtation, polite, but direct. His hair was still done up as it had been yesterday, and the only other thing aside from his features to really give him recognition was that aura of command that surrounded him, of expecting to be obeyed.

Ring Ring

“oops, exscuse me a second Emma, go ahead and take the next one.” He stepped to the side and answered his cell phone. “Hello? Hi Jannet, what’s up? What do you mean?” He gave a heavy sigh and rubbed at his temples lightly with his free hand, listening to the phone. “What do you mean you booked two appointments at 1:30 today? I can’t be two places at once. I…” He sighed again and took a moment to visibly calm himself. “Listen Jannet. This isn’t the first time you’ve done something like this. You’ve been late three times in two weeks, and I can barely decipher your hand writing. I need someone more organized than this to keep my affairs in order. Clean out your desk, I’ll cut you your final check when I get back to the office. I’m sorry, but tears are not going to fix this. You have to be responsible for your own actions.” He wrinkled his nose and there was audible noise coming from the phone. He clicked it shut and shook his head. “Damn it…”

Emma came over and frowned, handing him the cup of coffee. “On the house honey. You look like your having a hell of a day.” He smiled greatfully and took the cup. He still pulled out a few bills and handed him to her. “Keep it or put it in the till dear, your choice. Thanks for the kindness.”

He turned on his heels and strode to the nearest table. Settling himself down into a chair he leaned over the cup of coffee and glanced at his phone. He had a little over an hour to figure out what to do before he had to get back and get dressed. “Great… now I need a new secretary. “ He looked back at Emma and spoke up. “Hey Emma, you know anyone who’s got organizational skills? I’m in a bad way here.”

Emma shrugged helplessly and called back. “I don’t know anyone Mr. Steward. But ask some of the other girls, they might have an idea. Whatcha looking for?”

“Bah, just someone to help keep me organized so I can run the office efficiently. I don’t even care if they have experience, as long as they can keep their head on straight.” He took a sip of coffee and nearly choked on it. Poor Emma had forgotten the cream. “Got any cream left darlin?” No you know what, screw it, he wasn’t about to get up and get it. It’s just going to be a crap day.

Pearl took a sip from her warm coffee drink as she glanced up from her magazine and looked out the window glancing at a few people walk by and looked back down to her magazine again flipping the page looking over pictures of Hawaii as she sighed softly reading about it’s vast culture, animals, plants and history. To Pearl it just screamed excitement, she wasn’t exactly sure if she could handle eating some of what was described as wonderful cuisines but she would give it a try if she ever had the chance.

Turning the page she looked over a vast array of pictures showing various fish species that were bright in colors and blue waters that were crystal clear making it easy to be able to see the reefs when snorkeling. To her it looked like the best vacation spot , it looked relaxing and she knew one day she would experience it no matter who told her different she was going to be something and see the world through her own eyes. People called her a silly dreamer but pearl disagreed with them, she never let them get her down if anything her need to prove them wrong grew.

Pearl lifted her head as she looked up to the clock seeing she still had roughly forty minutes left. Her eyes scanned the café as she noticed a man at the counter, she could only see him from behind but he had on nice tight fitting jeans that fit him well with a blue cotton tee shirt that showed his muscular build. He had short blonde hair, the same color as Mr. Steward did but there was no way that was him, she couldn’t see a man with that kind of money stopping in there for a coffee when she was sure he had hired help at home to make it for him, to make him anything he desired at the snap of his fingers.

Her head dropped again as she turned the next page, she heard voices talking that drew her attention but once again she dismissed it as a ‘no way’ and began to read. A cell phone rang but she never looked up from the magazine, she took another sip of her drink and placed it down as she stayed in her little own world as a dreamer. Pearl looked up and watched as a short pimply face teenager about her age starred at her from the opposite corner, pearl looked away feeling slightly embarrassed as she never felt comfortable in her own skin.

She knew she was a pretty girl but she never accepted compliments well, she knew in life looks were always something that eventually faded, she never relied on them like her mother did. Pearl’s mother was in her middle forties and her looks and figure were everything, she told pearl over and over that she needed to make sure she took good care of what god gave her and to use it wherever and whenever she could but pearl let it go in one ear and out the other, she was smart and wanted to get through life on her intelligence even though her looks would definitely help.

“Hey Emma, you know anyone who’s got organizational skills? I’m in a bad way here.” Pearl heard a man say as she flipped another page not wanting to be nosey and tried not to listen in on the conversation.

“I don’t know anyone Mr. Steward. But ask some of the other girls, they might have an idea. Whatcha looking for?” The woman behind the counter replied. That was when pearl looked up, her heart skipped a beat when she heard his name.

“Bah, just someone to help keep me organized so I can run the office efficiently. I don’t even care if they have experience, as long as they can keep their head on straight.” He said as Pearl glanced in his direction. “Got any cream left darlin?”

Pearl closed the magazine and stood up and walked it back to where she got it from as she turned her smiled in his direction and walked back to her table where she reached for her drink and curled her fingers around the warm cup and swallowed hard and she shuffled her feet nervously over to his tale.

“Hello again Mr. Steward, we met yesterday at Mr. Potter’s you offered me and my friend a ride home. I couldn’t but over hear your conversation with the woman behind the counter that you’re looking for help in the office? I don’t have the greatest office skills but I am a quick learner and very efficient as well as dependable.” Pearl shuffled her feet as she stood there still nervous, her voice soft yet almost one of a song bird that could bust out at any time in this amazing beautiful voice.

Her eyes dropped for a minute as she fiddled with the tab of the cups top flicking it back and forth as her long locks dropped down around her face and then she reached up and pushed them back behind her ears making eye contact with him again. “I have school Monday through Friday but I can get out on a work program through school like around eleven in the morning till whenever you needed me for and weekends are not a problem I never have anything much to do.”

Pearl was trying to sell her self the best she could and she felt she was failing miserable at it. She took in a deep breath and glanced at the empty seat across from him, her knees were knocking she swore that he could probably hear them. She glanced at the clock again and then back to him. “I need to meet my ride in thirty minutes or its going to be a long walk back home.”

His head was really starting to pound.

He was already mulling it over in his brain. Today was going to be a disaster that he was going to have to fix. When was he going to find time to put together interviews? Maybe one of these serving girls knew someone that could fill in as a temp. He glanced around the room and almost spilled his coffee on his hand. That young girl from yesterday was standing in front of him talking to him. Was this for real? Or was the stress making him see things? Wait, she was talking to him. What was it she had said?

“Hello again Mr. Steward, we met yesterday at Mr. Potter’s you offered me and my friend a ride home. I couldn’t but over hear your conversation with the woman behind the counter that you’re looking for help in the office? I don’t have the greatest office skills but I am a quick learner and very efficient as well as dependable.”

“I have school Monday through Friday but I can get out on a work program through school like around eleven in the morning till whenever you needed me for and weekends are not a problem I never have anything much to do.”

“I need to meet my ride in thirty minutes or its going to be a long walk back home.”

He was still grappling mentally with this whole situation. Here he was yesterday cursing life because she had walked away from him, and today she shows up in an attempt to rescue him from his crappy situation. He couldn’t help it, he started to laugh. He had a deep rich laughter that belied his normally quiet voice. It was the sort of laughter that made others smile just by being. He rose quickly and pulled out the chair for her. “Sit down young lady, forgive my laughter. I just find this whole situation amusing. Here I was yesterday trying to make your life a little easier, you refuse me, and today try to return the favor. Life has a way of making a joke of things it seems.”

He waited for her to settle into the chair, then sat down himself. “First off, may I ask what your name is, and how old you are? I know it’s not polite to ask a young woman how old she is, but there are child labor laws. I need someone nearly full time, and unless your 18 years of age I simply couldn’t keep you on lawfully as much time as I need, and I wouldn’t want your studies to slip. School is important to your future.” He had an easy way about how he was speaking. He smiled a welcoming smile and sat in a relaxed fashion. He still radiated that aura of command but it shifted almost like a father would talk to his daughter. Almost.

He had the mental picture of pulling this girl out of the rain.

He nodded thoughtfully as she spoke her age and her name. Smiling toward her. “your mother named you true. You are indeed a beautiful gem among the sand. Tell me Pearl, do you have a neat hand, and a head for numbers and organization? There will be typing involved of course, but sometimes it’s more expedient to hand write things, so penmenship is important, and if your typing skills lack, you can hand write until you can learn to type.”

He realized he wanted this, and he felt like a lion behind bars, and the steak was on the other side. He had to sit calmly instead of pace the length of the cage, or he would frighten this girl away. She already showed bravado in speaking to him like that. She would do well if he could just bring her in and seal the deal.

“your main duties would be answering phones, scheduling meetings, greeting folks as they come in the door. Most of the time my secretary has to spend time at my house as well to take care of affairs, but seeing as your in school I could wave that if nessicary. I wouldn’t want to inhibit your schooling. As for wages, I could start you out on a trial pay of about twelve dollars, if I think things are working out I’ll bump you up to fourteen and give you some health insurance. If your family doesn’t have any, maybe we can look at getting a supplemental plan for them. I know most people can’t afford it these days.”

Suddenly he recalled what she had said about a ride. “You mentioned you had to be meeting a ride home. Would you like to meet your friend and leave? Or would you rather stay here and talk with me a little more. I could drive you home after we had come to a satisfactory agreement, and I can also talk to your mother and father to make sure it’s ok with them. Oh. One last thing about our agreement that I must insist upon. Since you would be taking half days off school to come work for me, I’ll need regular achedemic reports to make sure your grades are not suffering because of your job. A young, pretty girl like yourself shouldn’t be working her fingers to the bone, and letting her schooling suffer. School is more important than this opportunity. Even if you may not think so.”

He drew a breath. “So.. what do you say?” He smiled. Taking a sip of coffee he waited for her to speak. He grimaced, where was that damn cream? He muttered something about it, actually.

Pearl watched as he broke out laughing, her eyes dropped from his as she suddenly felt foolish and wished she had never walked over to his table and opened her mouth to him. Looking up she thought about running out the door, she’d never have to see him again but she would end up mulling over a few other people to get to it.

Looking to him once again, she got confused, but the smile made her feel a lot better as the corners of his kissable mouth turned up and he offered her a seat at his table. Pearl felt her stomach twist into knots as she pulled the chair out and sat down, sitting her coffee cup on the table before she squeezed it tightly and popped the lid off and had coffee going everywhere.

“Sit down young lady, forgive my laughter. I just find this whole situation amusing. Here I was yesterday trying to make your life a little easier; you refuse me, and today try to return the favor. Life has a way of making a joke of things it seems.” He said.

His words caused her to smile at him as her hands moved to her knees under the table gripping them as they stayed closed together. She could actually feel her knees shaking and hated how she felt so nervous around him. Pearl really felt bad she didn’t take the offer yesterday but she had hoped he had understood why she didn’t, she felt pulled between her friend and his kindly gesture for the ride home.

She loved how he stood for her and then sat back down, no man has every done that for her except her daddy when she was a little girl, he had just made her day and he didn’t even know it. Her daddy always told her that it was the little things in life that make it worth living and experiencing and she never understood it till then as his voice came back into her head hearing him say that.

School is important to your future.”

Pearl laughed a little when she remembered she had never said her name when they first met, “I’m sorry Mr. Steward please forgive me I never properly introduced myself yesterday. My name is Pearl like the ocean gem…Pearl barrows and I recently turned eighteen. I am a straight A student and always have been, I’m a bit past the other’s in school and currently I find it not challenging and boring. If I could have afforded to go to college I would have graduated a year before my time and went.”

He made her heart pound in her chest, he was as handsome as some of the actors from Hollywood, and she looked directly to him to let him know she was serious. Everything her daddy told her that she could remember as she was quite young when he passed came back to her.

“Your mother named you true. You are indeed a beautiful gem among the sand. Tell me Pearl, do you have a neat hand, and a head for numbers and organization? There will be typing involved of course, but sometimes it’s more expedient to hand write things, so penmanship is important, and if your typing skills lack, you can hand write until you can learn to type.”

“I was named by my father, he said I had the most beautiful pearly skin when I was born and I would forever be his ocean gem.” She smiled as she rattled on making herself feel even more foolish. She knew if she picked that cup up before her to take a sip she would probably spill it all down the front of her because she would do something stupid like miss her mouth.

“I have very neat handwriting Mr. Steward, and I have a head for numbers. I took a class in school for typing; I can type decently and efficiently. I would say about fifty-eight words a minute without many errors or very few. I would just need a few days to refresh myself if that were the case.” Pearl looked at the time, she sighed softly, when she didn’t wish time to fly by it did and when she needed it to it didn’t. She looked back to him and gave him her full attention once again.

“Your main duties would be answering phones, scheduling meetings, greeting folks as they come in the door. Most of the time my secretary has to spend time at my house as well to take care of affairs, but seeing as your in school I could wave that if necessary.

Pearl blinked as she took that all in wondering if that meant she actually had the job. She nodded listening to him, she wanted to pinch herself and see if this was real or not. “I would need to take the bus to your office would that be a problem? I graduate in a months time Mr. Stewart so if things could work out till then, I guess we could discuss other arrangements. It’s only my mother and I, my father passed away when I was little, sometimes she had a boyfriend and sometimes she doesn’t.”

She had NO idea what the going rate was for a job like that but she didn’t care, even if he would have offered her half of that she would have still been pleased. This was her first job and she needed to save for college plus help her mother as well. “Twelve dollars would be good Sir.”

He spoke out about her stating she had to meet a ride, and again pearl hated the feeling of being pulled but this time she had a great reason to pass up her ride with Miss Mills. “I would need to go tell her she’s over at the grocery store. I come with her she’s my ride into town, and I usually help her with her groceries and thing but I’m sure she wouldn’t mind this time and when I tell her who I am with she won’t worry …much.”

Pearl chuckled, “honestly Sir I really am ahead of the rest of my class, my grades wouldn’t suffer at all. I was asked if I wished to graduate early and not with my class since I’m so far ahead and as much as I’d like to be part of the tradition, its useless for me to sit in a classroom even part of the day and my peers see this. I’ve been looking for a job to help my mother and pay my way to college one day.”

She offered him a smile and inhaled then exhaled nice and slowly as her nerves started to calm down. “So... what do you say?” he asked.

“If you please excuse me I’ll run over and let her know I’ll be staying in town with you and to let my mother know I’ll have a ride home with you.”

Pearl left her drink sit as she walked to the door, she stopped at the curb and when the street was cleared she ran across it to the normal meeting place. She could feel the hem of the short thin cottom dress upon the upper back of her thighs. It didn’t take her long before she was back again sitting across from him once more with a smile breathing a bit heavily from the run. She took a drink of her now cold coffee and sat there looking at him.

Wow.

He was glad when she left. Not for the lack of her presence, quite the opposite. She was like a magnet. She was barely 18 years of age. Had a great head on her shoulders, she was polite, smart, articulate, respectful. It was all he could do not to let his eyes pop out of his skull listening to her when they spoke. This girl had everything going for her, and just needed a place to grow.

He got a…feeling when she spoke of her mother, and her ‘boyfriend’. Something told him she was not happy at home. Perhaps not abused, but there wasn’t a whole lot of love there. She mentioned her father passing and he frowned. That was always sad. A girl really should not grow up without a strong male figure to look up to. To teach her certain things, like how a man should treat a woman. Well perhaps he could show her a thing or two about how a young woman should be treated. Lord knows this area was lacking in suitable gentlemen. The men worked hard, and lived just like everyone else here; in poverty. Most fell into heavy drink, and half the rest just thought women were to be used as pleasure tools and maids. Sometimes it made him sick, that.

She nearly turned around on the balls of her feet and fled across the street. He watched her go and couldn’t help a quiet chuckle to himself. It was funny how a small event could turn the whole day around. His headache was already starting to fade a little. The server who had been speaking to young pearl strode up to him and smiled. “It’s a nice thing your doing for that girl, Mr. Steward. She’s been trying for a chance to spread her wings for some time. You know how the economy is here. Poor thing, but you don’t work her too hard, ya hear?” She gave the man a playful swat with her hand and flashed a smile. Most of the women took a shining to him in this place. He chuckled again and nodded his head. “’course I’ll look after her. I’d not want to deal with you if I didn’t.” He flashed a grin and someone finally appeared with his cream. He nodded greatfully and settled back in just in time to see Pearl come back in all grace and dignity, spoiled only a little by her heaving breath.

He stood up once more and smiled. He couldn’t help himself, the heaving of her chest caught his attention, for just a split second. He felt the front of his jeans suddenly get a little tighter. “Welcome back. Expedient, and eager to work hard. I like that. Please, sit down again Ms. Barrows, I’ll get you a fresh cup and we can talk about a few more things before we get you home.”

He waited for her to settle down and nodded at Emma who started a fresh cup immediately. He didn’t wait for her to agree, he just did it. Perhaps she thought him rude for it? He was just used to things going his way, it was a natural thing for him. He settled in. He turned his eyes to her own and smiled. Placing his hands upon the table and sitting in the chair comfortably. “First off, please call me Jason. We are going to be spending a lot of time together, Ms. Barrows, and you need to feel comfortable talking to me. Besides, formality like that is for old men. You don’t think I’m an old granddad do you?” He chuckled quietly, leaning a bit closer, he was trying to put her at ease, and oh to get her to smile at him again. Her eyes lit up when she smiled, so did the room, come to think of it.

“Now, do you have some professional clothing? If not, that is not a problem. After I take care of some things later today if your free, we can head out and pick you something up. Don’t worry about the up front cost, we will call it a good faith investment. I have a good feeling about you Ms. Barrows. I don’t think you will let me down. To be honest, your pulling me out of a tight spot by helping me out, and I truly appreciate it.”
“When do you think you would be able to start? What would be the limiting factor? I can call the school superintendent tonight and have the nessicary changes made before Monday rolls around. My last secretary left me in a tight spot, and frankly your going to have your work cut out for you for a week or so. She wasn’t all that adept at the juggling act that is my daily schedule.”

He paused, realizing he had just been rambling on and on and on. The poor girl more than likely thought she was being drawn into a tornado. His life was very hectic. That was the reason he needed someone who know what the hell she was doing!

“As far as transportation, we can work something out so that you do not need to worry about taking the bus. I can send someone to pick you up if need be, or if I have time, I could come do it myself. It would give me time to get to know something more about you than just work. You are an intriguing woman, Ms. Barrows.”

The fresh cup of coffee arrived for Pearl, with a smile from Emma. Jason tugged out his wallet and passed Emma the money. She departed and Jason turned his eyes back to Pearl intently. It was very obvious he had already decided she would take the job. He had decided her mother would agree, and that everything he had told here was going to occur. Totally confident that it would all go as he planned. He was as unflappable as a stone.

“Do you have any plans for the rest of the day? I’m running out of time myself, I have to go salvage a disaster. If you have plans I can take you home, if not, your welcome to come along to my office.”

He stood up again as she took her seat once more, pearl glanced over to the waitress she spoke often to and gave her a huge smile as pearl watched her wink back. If there was ever another that treated her like a daughter it was Emma, she loved just being around the woman, she was funny and true to heart always taking care of pearl as if she were her surrogate daughter.

“Welcome back. Expedient and eager to work hard, I like that. Please, sit down again Ms. Barrows, I’ll get you a fresh cup and we can talk about a few more things before we get you home.”

Pearl never drank more than one cup, she wasn’t really a coffee drinker and used it mainly as a treat to herself when she came into town. She wasn’t going to argue with him that would be rude and decided to just let him order her another cup. Pearl sat back, this time she crossed her legs feeling one knee fit directly into the back of the other like perfect puzzle pieces.

She reached up and ran her fingers through her hair pushing the long strands back over the top of her head feeling the hairs fall down the sides as she reached and pushed both sides back behind her ears.

He settled back in his chair, as she watched him “First off, please call me Jason. We are going to be spending a lot of time together, Ms. Barrows, and you need to feel comfortable talking to me. Besides, formality like that is for old men. You don’t think I’m an old granddad do you?”

Pearl had a hard time addressing him as Jason, “I will feel more comfortable calling you Mr. Steward until I’ve been around you a little longer if you don’t mind. I mean no respect but it I’m just not comfortable calling you by your fist name yet, that will take a bit of getting used to but I’ll try.”

She chuckled softly, “No, I don’t see you as my grandfather, you don’t look that old. It’s really just how I was raised…” Pearl watched as he leaned closer, she thought if anyone saw them talking they might think the wrong thing but he made her smile and she enjoyed when he did as well.

“Now, do you have some professional clothing?...” as soon as she heard that Pearl felt her self sink into her chair wanting to become part of it. She felt embarrassed having to admit she had nothing to wear that would be appropriate to work in an office. If there was ever a time she didn’t want to admit something it was then and there. Her mouth opened yet nothing came out of it as she turned her head and watched as the customers took their seats or got up picking out magazines. She knew she had to answer him it was probably the most uncomfortable time ever in her life.

“I-I don’t have anything like what I’d need and I well I would be grateful if you…” she stopped and swallowed hard, her fingers locked together as she finished her statement dropping her eyes down watching her fingers fit into one another.

“I’ll pay you back every cent I promise Mr. Steward, this is a little embarrassing having to admit something like that.” Pearl was sure he never had to sit in the seat she was where he had to admit something as bad as not having good clothing. Her mother always made sure she had clothing that fit usually bought from the town second hand store but she never wore rags. Pearl knew her cheeks flushed red in color, she hated that fact she embarrassed easily and usually made her shy up, but she needed to stop that habit and get past it.

“When do you think you would be able to start? What would be the limiting factor? I can call the school superintendent tonight and have the necessary changes made before Monday rolls around. My last secretary left me in a tight spot, and frankly you’re going to have your work cut out for you for a week or so. She wasn’t all that adept at the juggling act that is my daily schedule.”

Pearl’s eyes grew wide as she rambled on, she laughed out for a change and felt the weight upon her chest go away and she felt much more comfortable around him. “I can start whenever you need me to Mr. St…J-Jason.” She took a sip of her cold coffee and placed it back down on the table as she shifted in her seat. “I can’t see any limits at this point; I don’t have a social life and spend most of my time with Miss. Mills or working on something for my SATs, teaching myself things that I may need for them. I’ll be taking them over the summer months so I want to be prepared for the test.”

She had confidence in her self as far as skills go, she thought she would do well for him or she would have never stepped up and put herself out there on the line to him. “I don’t know how to get a hold of anyone at the school for what you need, I can only tell you his name and let you go from there.”

Emma walked by and checked upon them as she touched pearl’s hand with her fingers in a way of letting her know everything was okay. Pearl looked up at her and smiled giving her a bright set of eye that sparkled like sunshine on the ocean waters, glistening full of color and hope. “I’m a very organized person, I like things in order and I have a place for everything and everything in its place. Mother says I have a bit of O.C.D. in me when it comes to things like that.”

Emma filled her cup as they sat there talking back and forth, the more they spoke the more comfortable she felt. “As far as transportation, we can work something out so that you do not need to worry about taking the bus. I can send someone to pick you up if need be, or if I have time, I could come do it myself. It would give me time to get to know something more about you than just work. You are an intriguing woman, Ms. Barrows.”

“I don’t mind taking public transportation unless it didn’t run at a scheduled time; I don’t wish to put you or anyone out of your way or theirs. I’m really grateful for this chance; the job market around town isn’t the best. I’ve been trying to weeks to find something other than being a dancer which my father would roll over in his grave if I did that…not that I see it as a bad thing, but for me…” she just felt like she dug herself into a deep hole and hushed on the dancing subject.

“Let’s just say, any help you can offer I will take at the current time to make this work for you and I.”

“Do you have any plans for the rest of the day? I’m running out of time myself; I have to go salvage a disaster. If you have plans I can take you home, if not, you’re welcome to come along to my office.” He asked.

“No Sir I have no plans, and if you wouldn’t mind I’d like that very much. Am I dressed okay?” she asked adverting her eyes from him hating she needed to ask that but she didn’t wish to embarrass him. “No, my mother won’t be home, she and well her boyfriend are away for the weekend they will be leaving…” she looked to the clock then back to him…”they should be leaving in about an hour and returning Sunday evening.”

He took note of her embaressment and couldn’t help but smile. She had no idea. Really not many people had. He wasn’t born to money like people were on the TV shows. He had come into money through just working hard, a lot of boldness, and a bit of dumb luck, really. He was always a sharp kid, he had a head for numbers, and organization, but it was really people that were his strength. He grew up ranching, cutting timber, laying fence, doing just about anything anyone would pay him to do.

He smiled at her, a warm smile when she stumbled over his name. He found that rather charming about her. This shyness around him was something he found to be quite adorable. Though he hoped she would be able to shed it around customers. The respectful nature about her would work, and she would come into her own with enough time. He knew she could do it.

“It’s not a problem Ms. Barrows. Call me what you are comfortable calling me, I’d not force a single thing upon you that did not sit right with you. That wouldn’t be right of me. Maybe you’ll become more comfortable with it in time.”

He gave her a warm smile and reached out to slowly place his large hand over her own. His grip was firm, but comforting. His strong hands encircling her smaller ones. “I’ll tell you what Ms. Barrows, let us get moving for now We can chat about the rest on the way.” He glanced her over and slowly rose from his seat, stepping behind her to pull out her chair. “Don’t worry, your dressed just fine, this is going to be a couple of informal meetings, and you can just hang out at the reception area and familiarize yourself with what’s going on. Perhaps even planning out how your going to operate things.”

As the chair scooted out and she rose he gave her a friendly smile. It quickly turned into a grimace as he rolled his shoulders and they gave a soft pop. Ugh last night’s sleep was still taking a toll on him. His shoulders were tense like a rock. He quickly let the expression fade and extended his arm to her with a smile.

Ring Ring oh hell who was that? He grimaced and gave Pearl and apologetic smile. “Excuse me for just a moment please.” He murmered and picked up the phone. “Hello?” He was silent for a long moment, not the listening sort of silent. He stood there like a tightly coiled spring, ready to pop into action at a second of notice. Finally he let out a sigh. “I understand Mr. Johnson. I’m sorry for the mix up. Jannet no longer works for me, that is more than likely the nature of the mix up. She double booked you and the Reps for US bank this morning, and she lost her position because of it. I’ll meet you first thing mo..” he was interrupted, with heated words from the phone that pearl could easily hear the remnants of. Definitely not a happy man. Jason never lost his cool however, his voice was smooth as the surface of a still pond. “I totally understand. I know you were looking forward to the meeting. So was I. Tell you what. I already have a replacement for Jannet, and I will have her give you a call Monday, to see when we can meet to settle this. How about Golf? My treat. Excellent. Thank you for understanding sir. Until then. Mm bye.”

The phone clapped shut slowly and he let out a weary sigh. He was upset, but he looked at Pearl and smiled slowly. “Well Ms. Barrows. It looks like my afternoon is clear after all. What do you say we take the time to do a little shopping for Monday?”

He led her out of the café and toward his dark blue Mustang. He held the door for her as they exited. Another vice of his. He liked cars. The horn chirped and his hand came from his pocket. He led her to the passenger side and opened the door to allow her to settle herself with a nod. He walked around to the other side of the car and settled himself into the seat, clipping his seat belt. Keys in the ignition the car engine roared to life. He turned to this beautiful young woman in his passenger seat and spoke softly. “Sounds like Jannet didn’t like loosing her job. She corrected her mistake, by canceling both of my meetings for the day. I’m more than likely going to get another angry phone call here in a few moments. I… ugh ya know what? I need to do something to lift my spirit. Name one store you’ve always wanted to go shopping at. We will go pick you out whatever you want from there. This one your not allowed to pay me back for. Business expenses are no fun, but gifts that make a beautiful woman smile is another matter. You wouldn’t want to rob me of that, would you?” That last spoken, because she would more than likely refuse. She seemed like a girl who wanted to earn it all on her own steam which he respected, but he did really enjoy doing things for other people. After all, people were his strong point.

Pearl was pleased that he understood and agree with letting her get comfortable with calling him Jason with time and not force the issue on her. She knew in time it would happen but for right now Mr. Steward was going to have to do. Plus he didn’t call her by her first name either, so that made her feel a little better.

His hand slide across the table, pearl felt it blanket over her and a squeeze as she looked down to their hands and then back up to him. She didn’t pull her hand away she just left it lay there under his. He spoke about them getting going, and he reassured her that her clothing was fine even though pearl felt she’d be out of place, but she really wanted to trust his word and yet as simple as that seemed to do it was so hard. Pearl for the first time was really excited about opening a new door in her life, one that would help her get to where she was going, she could feel her fingers grasping the coat tails of her dreams and just needed to pull them in slowly.

He rose up and came around standing behind her, pearl looked back over her shoulder as he helped her with the chair. Emma just happened to glance over and give Pearl a smile and a thumbs up as pearl stood and stepped aside watching those around her as he pushed the chair back in. She turned her head hearing his shoulders ‘pop’ as he rolled them, “That sounded like it hurt.”

Pearl smiled taking his arm as she slipped hers through and started to walk aside him to the door. His cell phone went off and he excused himself to take the call. Pearl heard the man on the other end; she could easily tell it wasn’t a pleasant business call. She watched as Jason’s facial expressions changed and he released a sigh, she felt bad for him. From what she could tell his secretary screwed something up and he was taking the brunt of her mistake. Her smile grew when he said about his new replacement, she listened in on the very ending on Jason’s side and took in about golf and then he closed the phone shut with a snap.

“Well Ms. Barrows. It looks like my afternoon is clear after all. What do you say we take the time to do a little shopping for Monday?”

Pearl never thought that he would personally take her shopping, that stunned her. She had never had a male go shopping with her and Flip didn’t count since it was only grocery shopping with Miss. Mills and him. Clothing was way different her Pearl’s mind, it was a ‘girls’ think to do so this would be a whole new experience for her to go through like everything else is going to be.

Pearl walked with him till they got to the door; he stepped aside and let her go first. She stood there looking for his limo not seeing it anywhere and was a bit puzzled, maybe he had to call or something for his driver she thought. He took his place again aside her as he led her towards a beautiful blue mustang, pearl raised a brow and then realized this is what he came in.

He opened the door for her and allowed her to get in then closed it behind her, she clicked her seat belt and folded her legs like a young lady and watched as he walked around and got in the drivers seat. When he started the car the engine purred like a well oiled machine, pearl chuckled a bit as she looked around the car admiring his taste.

Many called her ‘country’ which upset her if they only got to know her she wasn’t some backwoods redneck girl, she wasn’t even from Texas to begin with. But like many she was used to being looked down upon as trailer park trash which she figured most associated with the Jerry Springer show since he was always doing the shows from people living in trailer parks. It’s okay, one day she would show them all.

“Sounds like Janet didn’t like loosing her job. This one you’re not allowed to pay me back for. Business expenses are no fun, but gifts that make a beautiful woman smile is another matter. You wouldn’t want to rob me of that, would you?”

Pearl turned her head and looked to him as she spoke to her; he brought her back from her own thoughts. “I’m sorry you had such business troubles Mr. Steward.” She replied first then gave him a weird look, maybe one both of confusion and a little lost. “I’m rather ignorant when it comes to shopping at stores; I have no idea where even to go other than the thrift store in town. I’m from the wrong side of the tracks as folks around here say, well not really folks, more those I go to school with.”

Her head turned as she looked out the window as he drove along, looking over the names of places she never bothered to go into, looking at others walking along the sidewalks. Pearl had a feeling he was the type of man that always got his own way, and she wasn’t about to argue with him but she did know that she would pay him back regardless of what he said. Not wanting to start off on a bad foot she decided to take care of the matter like that in her own way when he would at least expect it.

“You pick if you don’t mind” Pearl said shifting in her seat.

It seemed like this young woman had a habit of turning what he thought upside down. He had been sure that she would just pull up a name. After all what little girl didn’t dream of being a princess? Still, she had her head planted firmly on her shoulders, and he couldn’t fault her for that. His frown was momentary. He was hoping she would produce something she would want. Instead he felt like he was going to force this on her. Well what had to be done, had to be done. She needed clothing if she was going to work for him.

He peered at her intently for a moment and pursed his lips thoughtfully. He had remarkably kissable lips for a man. A sudden shift in his gaze, though the warmth was still there, his eyes softened. His smile changed to something of determination. He reached out slowly and brushed his hand against her cheek. Savoring the touch for the barest moment. His smile returned and his voice was softer, but more intense was the only way to describe it. “Pearl, that is now who you are, that is where you are from. The two are quite different. Where you are from only states where you have been. Who you are, states where you will be in the future. Your current place will not dictate your life. There is a fire in you, a drive to do better. I can see it as clearly as the sun in the sky. I was in your place not long ago. I’m giving you this chance because I have faith in you, and I want to be there to see the woman you will become when you find your wings and fly. When people label you with negativity it is a reflection of who they are, and what they want you to be, because they don’t like the fact that they are in that place. Do not live up to their labels. Do not live up to what I see for you. Shatter them, become who you want to be, in here.” He allowed his hand to drive along her neck slowly, a gentle, warm caress. He touched her shoulder meaningfully, not willing to touch her any lower, as she might think he was trying to come on to her. The message was clear though, he meant her heart of course.

He held her gaze fiercely for a moment, driving every bit of personal force he could muster into that message. He knew very much how she felt. No one encouraged her, everyone beat her down, told her there was no chance to do better. He had been there, and oh how good had it felt when he proved them wrong. Most of those people worked for him now. She could do this, and he knew she could. He drew a breath. That was the first time he had used her first name, and he was being very forward with her. He just had to say it. He couldn’t look at her, and not smile.

He let his hand linger for another moment longer, then he withdrew it. His smile remained but those walls that he had brought down to speak to her came back up. He was formality, and calm cool control all over again. “I have just the place then, Ms. Barrows.” Without another word he backed out of the parking lot and they were off. The store fronts buzzed by as the road wound on, taking them farther and farther away from this small town area. He turned his head on occasion to look at her with a smile. “So what are you planning to study on college?”

The city limits faded as they drove and talked. Friendly chatter about the future. Hopes, dreams. He gave her some of the details about his business proposition. How he was buying out several of those old beat up strip malls and he was going to build a large mall and entertainment area. The intention was simple, bring in jobs, bring in traffic. He was even working on getting an interstate ramp closer to the area to feed people to it. That was one of the main problems with the area, it was isolated and sprawled. People lived so far apart commerce suffered. The only time anyone from the outside came, was because they were lost. The town was like a fat man in a sweat suit on a hot day. Stewing in it’s own sweat. He didn’t say it like that to pearl of course. He stated it in a more matter of fact, business way.

“This is what I’m talking about. A nice store here, and we had to drive twenty miles out of town just to get there. There is no commerce in the area and that is why everyone is poor.” The car came to park in front of the Lords and Ladies. He slipped out of the drivers seat and once more opened the door for her with a smile. Extending his hand to help her out. There was a playful glint in his eye as he spoke quietly. “My lady” he even dipped at a hint of a bow as he helped her out of the car. “So do you want me to wait for you somewhere? I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. I’ll help you pick something out if you’d like, or you can do it on your own. The ball is in your court, so to speak.” Oh how he wanted to be there. He wasn’t a fool, he knew part of the reason he was investing so much in her. Not a word he had spoken was a lie, but he had not told her and rightly so, that she had haunted his dreams, and every time he saw her, his pulse raced. She was so beautiful she made his mouth go dry, and she was so sweet, so innocent….

Ring Ring

He winced. He knew just who that would be. He really didn’t want this day to get worse. He was doing his best to salvage it. He reached down and pressed the button that silenced his ringer. He gave Pearl a remarkably boyish grin to her questioning glance. “It’s not often that a guy gets to spend the day with the most beautiful woman in three counties, I’m not about to let some corporate wind bag ruin the rest of my day. Ready?”

The car alarm chirped and the doors locked at a press of a button and he offered her a smile. Extending his arm to her once more he spoke quietly. “So, what’s your favorite color, Pearl. Er my apologies, Ms. Barrows?” Something in the way he spoke her name, there was a slight caress to it. Compared to it, the formal title seemed stiff and awkward. Yet she had not given him permission to speak to her in such informal terms yet, he would not do so until she gave it.

Pearl felt very ignorant when it came to many things where Jason was concerned, she was realizing how being from the other side of the track as people say did make a big difference. Flip had told her that one day he was going to leave Welcome Texas and make it big, he told her there was no way he could take her with when she asked. He got jealous when she spoke of other guys liking her, she turned down dates because of him, but she’s wising up quickly.

She had the biggest crush on Flip since the first day she met him, but he always treated her like the little sister, he gave her mixed feelings first he told her he didn’t want involved with her like a love relationship, he was afraid he would hurt her. Flip did have a wild streak and when he went to town with his buddies it really would come out, he’d drink, then find a woman no matter if he knew her or not and have sex with her.

He would do anything for her and yet he stayed at an arms distance. Pearl just couldn’t understand him; she didn’t understand men at all to be honest. She always heard women were the hard ones to relate to but she thinks it’s the other way about. Looking around she turned her head back to Jason and caught him looking at her, she smiled. This was a door opening up for pearl and if she didn’t walk through it she would be stuck forever in the trailer park just like many others.

Jason smiled at her and then reached out and caressed her cheek with his fingertips, pearl blushed and her head slightly tilted down and to the side. He sent a shiver through her spine, there was only one other male that did that and it was flip. Two totally different men yet they were the only two that could make her want to scream out in a good why by just a slight touch that produced a surge through her whole body.

“Pearl, that is now who you are, that is where you are from. The two are quite different. Where you are from only states where you have been. Who you are, states where you will be in the future…” he said as she stared rambling to her and she listened intently, no eye rolls, no nothing she was generally interested in hearing what he had to say.

“Thank you for those kind words, I try and not allow those who look down upon me and say hurtful things stop me from my goals and dreams. There are days it is so easy to walk away and smile at the world, then there are days when it just seems like such a battle and I just want to let them win, but then this little voice tells me I can’t.”

pearl felt real close to him at that very moment, when he said he had faith in her, he had no idea what he did to her as a person, he gave her that extra bit of strength she needed and just didn’t; have behind her, he was that person in her corner rooting for her to succeed, and offering her that chance.

“I really needed to hear that, I thank you Jason…” she said it! She laughed and smirked looking over to him as his name flowed freely from her lips. His hand moved along her long slender neck, she closed her eyes for a moment and felt his touch; she took in his scent as his hand lingered here just resting on her shoulder. He meant his words; she could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. She looked back over to him and gave him a smile and their eyes just looked into each others causing pearl to forget everything around her and she just focused upon his face as if she were taking a mental picture for a secret little memory box in her mind.

He pulled his hand back and immediately Pearl felt a void, her smile dropped but she tried not to show the disappointment. “I have just the place then, Ms. Barrows.” He said as she made a turn and they headed out of town. She wasn’t even worried that she was in a car basically with a total stranger, she trusted him, she wasn’t sure why but she just did. “So what are you planning to study on college?” Pearl looked at him for a minute as she had a few ideas but she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to be or to take.

“I haven’t figured that out yet, I have a few ideas, I thought about business, then maybe psychology…or maybe even marine biology…but I think business would be the smart thing. I’m just not sure really.” She answered.

They chatted back and forth about everything that came to mind, he keyed her in on his business and his future plans as she listened hanging on to every word he said, she never looked back as the small town of Welcome Texas grew smaller and smaller until it went out of sight. Pearl didn’t want to look back just ahead, she was in the positive mode, and didn’t want it to go away she felt so good inside and even out.

“This is what I’m talking about. A nice store here and we had to drive twenty miles out of town just to get there. There is no commerce in the area and that is why everyone is poor.” He said and she agreed he was right. He parked the car and turned the engine off, she undid her seatbelt and just as she was about to get the door he was already there opening it for her, he made her feel like a princess, he made her feel special and he never made fun of anything she said. He didn’t talk to her as if she was a child and she appreciated it all.

She laughed when he addressed her as ‘my lady’ and then he continued on about what she wanted to do as far as shop alone or have him go with her. Pearl gave it a bit of thought and she decided she wasn’t to sure what she should get so she smiled and tilted her head like a schoolgirl with a crush on her teacher, “I’d…well... I’d like you to come with me.”

His phone rang, pearl hoped it wouldn’t ruin his day, she waited for him to answer it but instead he left it go. She blinked in disbelief and caught the grin he gave her. “It’s not often that a guy gets to spend the day with the most beautiful woman in three counties, I’m not about to let some corporate wind bag ruin the rest of my day. Ready?” Pearl blushed and hid her face a little bit as her hair fell around it. If there was ever a day to remember it was that day, she had no idea how it could get any better than it already was.

He turned the car’s alarm on and offered his arm, “ready” she said and walked aside him, her body was perfectly straight and she actually forgot that she was from the other side of town; he had her walking on clouds with each step.

“So, what’s your favorite color, Pearl. Er my apologies, Ms. Barrows?” he asked her as she laughed and bumped her hip playfully into his.

“If you want me to call you Jason then you need to call me Pearl...deal? I love pink, it makes me feel se...” she stopped before she could get the word sexy out, “pink, red, and earth tones.” He opened the door for her and they entered the store. Pearl stopped and her mouth dropped, she glanced around slowly and her eyes widened. “Wow, if it wasn’t for you I probably never would have stepped into a place like this…”

Pearl pointed to the right where a lit up sign was showing the ladies department, then aside it was the young miss sizes which would probably be more her style and sizes. “I think the Jr. Miss section would be where I can find my sizes.” She said as she turned to him and smiled as her body twisted and she kind of turned him in that direction.

“Do you like women in dresses or dress pants…skirts…when they work for you? I know some places prefer one or the other...your preference?” pearl asked as she headed in that direction, her eyes looking over everything they could taking it all in. “You like women in heels?” Pearl didn’t look at him she just waited for him to answer as they neared the section she wanted; they wanted…how about perfume, like them to smell good maybe like spring flowers or something else?” Pearl was all full of questions, just rambling on and on tossing things out there that came to mind now that everything felt...’real.’

There was definitely a spring in her step when she walked, her eyes were sparkling like gems and her body language matched her happy emotion.

Things were proceeding wonderfully. She had listened to what he had to say, and confessed how sometimes it really was hard to keep on trying, but she would, and that his words had helped her in some way. In an odd way, that simple comment she made produced a warmth that rushed through his whole body, from toes to ears. He had taken an immediate shining to this woman as soon as he met her. He couldn’t put his finger on one reason alone, the list seemed to be so long that he couldn’t even recognize them.

He held out his hand to her and smiled when she took it. She cocked her head at him in a curious way. A way that left him feeling…attractive. There was a glint in her beautiful eyes. A meaningful sparkle there. He laughed as she actually bumped his hip with her own! She was showing spirit and becoming comfortable. This was a good thing. “If you want me to call you Jason then you need to call me Pearl...deal? I love pink, it makes me feel se...” When she corrected herself he gave a gentle laugh. It wasn’t snide laughter. It was affection filled amusement. “My dear Pearl, you have yourself a deal, but please. No need to edit yourself. You are a young woman. You have the right to feel sexy, you have the right to think of yourself as sexy. “
Leading her into the store and holding the door open for her was a matter of habit, but it also gave him time to watch her walk. There was something about the way she was walking, the way she was holding her body that wasn’t there before. A pride, confidence, energy, excitement. This was someone who went from feeling like a girl with no one on her side, to a woman who knew she had support, knew the world was at her fingertips and knew she was a beautiful flower in full bloom.

She was chattering so quickly he could barely get a sentence in, let alone think about her questions. He was smiling at her fondly, almost an open grin really Her energy was contagious. She was almost bouncing on her toes! He even caught himself laughing from time to time. Just laughing for the sake of laughing, she was brightening his day, and it showed. He wore a perpetual smile, and whenever their eyes met, his own danced brightly, and his smile brightend, or got bigger. If this was how his days were going to be he was going to love being at work.

“Wow, if it wasn’t for you I probably never would have stepped into a place like this…” He chuckled softly and gave her hand a gentle squeeze as she spoke and he replied quietly. “You have brightend my day just by agreeing to come with me and spend some time with me. It’s nice to have some company for a change.” The barrage of questions seemed endless, but he did his best to keep up with her excited prattle. “I prefer dresses, or skirts. I think there is nothing better in the world than a woman who knows she is a woman and is not afraid to show the world that she can be feminine. Not that the suits don’t have their place, but I just hrm… I feel like I’m coming off a bit sexist. That’s not the intent, it’s just what suits my taste.”

They were entering the Jr. Miss section and he looked around with a sudden feeling of embarrassment. He always felt awkward being in the ladies section, even just walking through it to get somewhere else. He usually avoided it. “Heels, I think a little bit of heel is good, though I understand too much can be quite discomforting”

“Though to be honest Pearl, I think you look great just as you are, and I’m not good with mental pictures. Your gonna have to show me what you pick out if you want an accurate opinion. Besides, how am I going to agree with you or not if pink makes you look sexy if I can’t see for myself?” He smiled at her in a reassuring manner. There was something in the way he was looking at her. As she had become more comfortable with him, so had he let his walls down some. He was not just looking at her as one professional to another. He was definitely looking at her as a man looking at a beautiful young woman. Was it risky? Perhaps, but they were shopping for clothing, and he wasn’t sure how he was going to help her pick anything out if he didn’t look at her in that mind set. Truth to tell she had seen Flip look at her like this plenty of times, but then again it was Flip.

“Perfume… I am a firm believer that it should be an enhancement, not a blanket. I think you should find something that accents your own scent. That’s again something I’d have to sample before I could offer an opinion about. I’m afraid I’m not very good at picking out things for women. Not something I’ve had a lot of practice with.” He looked around, trying to find something to give her his suggestion. His eyes roamed and fell on the Bra section. His eyes glanced to Pearl quickly, then back to shoes they went. Crimson touched his cheeks, and he cleared his throat softly. The association his mind had made there was an obvious one, though he was trying to pretend he didn’t just embarrass himself in front of her.

He shook his head ruefully at himself. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a woman around the house to do any shopping for. The last time was well over two years ago. Most of my other staff keeps themselves distant enough from me. Or they are so overly friendly it’s obvious that their intentions are just to try and win favor with me so they can take advantage of the situation.”

He paused and he took her in, his eyes glittering warmly, a small smile touching his lips. “I don’t get anything like that from you. I feel comfortable around you, and like you are someone I can work with, and be friends with. If that’s true, it’s a gift that I could never put a price tag upon, and would never want to.”

“My dear Pearl, you have yourself a deal, but please. No need to edit yourself. You are a young woman. You have the right to feel sexy; you have the right to think of yourself as sexy.” He said and for the first time since she had met him pearl didn’t shy away from the comment he made, she smiled and they continued on. When their hips bumped she listened as he laughed a laugh that fit his smile as he looked to her.

His eyes drew her in, as did the smile he seemed to continue wearing on his face, one she was sure matched her own. She felt a little embarrassed as she realized her mouth was moving like a ducks ass and she threw question after question at him, but to Pearl she was a kid in a candy store. She told her self no matter what the cost was she would work it off, giving him a piece of her paycheck every week, then part would go to her mother and then part would go into the bank for her future no matter what it may be.

“You have brightened my day just by agreeing to come with me and spend some time with me. It’s nice to have some company for a change.” He said as she grinned showing a set of perfectly white straight teeth.

“I prefer dresses, or skirts. I think there is nothing better in the world than a woman who knows she is a woman and is not afraid to show the world that she can be feminine. Not that the suits don’t have their place, but I just hrm… I feel like I’m coming off a bit sexist. That’s not the intent; it’s just what suits my taste.” He replied as she answered some of her questions.

“No, no your not, I asked you for you opinion and what you like. It’s your business and I work for you, so you should have a bit of say what you like when one works for you. I mean I could come in there with ripped jeans and a dirty shirt and I’m sure you would rush me right out the door…not that I would, I mean I own worn jeans and I like wearing them but I do have common sense.”

As they entered the clothing section she looked at him and she laughed a bit noticing that he looked a bit uncomfortable, “Heels, I think a little bit of heel is good, though I understand too much can be quite discomforting” he said as she steered him into a certain section.

Pearl looked at him and she never gave it any thought, she knew he mother always wore them, then again she was always in a dress except when she was at home and then even majority of the time she wore dresses then. Her mother always told her dresses where a proper wearing for a young lady, pearl never agreed or disagreed with her she always wore what she felt comfortable in, and what she could blend in with around others her age. Most of the time it was jeans, sneakers and a regular shirt, anything that looked almost kind of in style they could find at second hand shops. “I don’t mind wearing them, they make me taller.”

“Though to be honest Pearl, I think you look great just as you are, and I’m not good with mental pictures. Your gonna have to show me what you pick out if you want an accurate opinion. Besides, how am I going to agree with you or not if pink makes you look sexy if I can’t see for myself?” She nodded as she walked about, she stopped at a few racks looking a few pieces of clothing over, and cocking her head now and then to each piece.

Pearl looked at him, the look was a lingering one, and she had this impish playful smile as her eyes danced about. “Okay let’s look if you see anything you like pick it out and I’ll try it on and I’ll do the same…” she said giving him her size. Pearl went back to browsing as they talked; she picked out three pieces and held them up with a raised brow.

Looking at him, she was almost in shock when he said about not having a lot of practice with picking out woman’s items. She listened more as he said about not having a woman around his house in about two years other than the help which seemed to be distant and just that…hired help.

“I don’t get anything like that from you. I feel comfortable around you, and like you are someone I can work with, and be friends with. If that’s true, it’s a gift that I could never put a price tag upon, and would never want to.”

She brushed the hair back that fell around her face putting it behind her ears, “Thank you very much, the more I get to know you your nothing like what I imagined.” Pearl was a bit confused and decided to ask about his marriages and some of the rumors.

“I don’t listen to rumors really, but I heard you were a ladies man, and was married like four times. You never go anywhere without a beautiful woman on your arm. I have seen you twice… once at Mr. Potter’s and then again today in town and both times you were alone so I’m going to guess the rumor was a false truth because you don’t seem to be a man that lies, it’s something about your face and how you respond to certain things. Body language tells another person a lot if they pay close attention and I do.”

Just as she spoke out she watched as his eyes caste over to the intimate apparel section and then looked back to her and his eyes dropped and he blushed. Pearl laughed and she looked watching a well dressed sales woman head their way. He was saved by the bell as she asked if she could help with anything.

“Yes please,“ Pearl said as she knew he was uncomfortable helping her. “I’m going to start work for this gentleman on Monday as a personal girl Friday; I have no idea what to wear other than dresses.”

The woman smiled and softly laughed as she looked to Jason and most likely recognized him as she said he could go have a seat by the dressing rooms, there were magazines he could browse if he liked and she would help the young lady. She asked pearl her favorite colors, long or short dresses, tight fitting...etc etc. She and pearl walked around she helped her pick seven outfits out, one for every day of the week and placed a few personal intimate items with it as there was a strapless dress in the bunch.

She led pearl to the dressing room where she went in and tried on the first dress and walked out to show Jason. She felt a little awkward but sooner or later he would see her in it anyway. The dress had a black tank top, low cut showing cleavage, then it went to a deep pink under her breasts where a belt hugged her body, the dress came down mid thigh and gathered tightly around her creamy toned thighs. It was a very form fitting mini dress that Pearl liked; she turned for him and looked over her shoulder as she did giving him a model pose. The dress just came down past her rounded cheeks; it wasn’t raunchy but very eye catching and classy. “Well what do you think?”

Each of the seven dresses was classy yet each seemed to show a bit more skin than the one before it yet it was still graceful for the office. Each one pearl modeled for him wanting his opinion, if he didn’t like it she would lay it aside, and another way handed to her by the sales woman. The last dress she came out in was a definite head turner; Pearl didn’t even want to go out in it to show him. She had never ever shown so much skin outside a bath suit, but this was different. The sales woman brought her a set of four inch black pumps and handed them to her and told her to put them on with the dress. Pearl did and she slowly exited the dressing room area one last time and stood there before him.

It was a sleeveless design with a duel V neck made of silver metallic that plunged down almost to her naval and showed the swells of her breasts, the silver strips acted like straps and ran from front to back. There were two thin straps across her breasts from one side to another; the material fit her snug embracing every curve of her body. Her eyes lifted and met his, “this is the last dress I promise...” she said.

“Doesn’t she look beautiful Sir?” the sales woman asked Jason. “Looks like a totally different young woman if you ask me. Any man would love to be seen with her on his arm dressed like that she’s model material with make-up and her hair done.” There was a call and the sales woman smiled, “I’ll be right back if you need anything else…” she walked away and pearl was glad.

They were both having a great time just being in each other’s company. He noticed it, and he thought she was noticing it just as much. This was a great start to their relationship together. Though more and more he was finding that the line of young professional woman, to just woman was blurring in his mind. His mind was giving warning, but in his heart he couldn’t listen. There was something about this girl that just drew him in like a fish on a line. Struggle as he might, he couldn’t fathom freedom from those eyes, that smile….

Right, reality check as he almost walked into a clothing rack. Focus you damn fool Her smiles, her grins were in ready supply it seemed, she truly was relaxing around him and fitting into a role. He just wasn’t sure what that role was. Once in a while he caught a look. He couldn’t decide what that look said. Was it hunger, excitement, determination? He wasn’t sure he knew, or if it mattered much.

He laughed quietly at that comment and gave a nod. “Good, because if you came in to my office in jeans and a t-shirt on a work day, I would send you home, but I might just paddle your bottom for before I did.” He gave her a sharp grin and a playful wink, still chuckling.

He nodded to her when she mentioned she didn’t mind wearing heels and it made her taller. A comment came to his lips, and his mental filter kicked in just in time to avoid making himself look like a pervert. She was a co worker right now, he couldn’t push things. Instead he spoke, and only managed a second or two where his mouth worked for words. “Well I’ll leave that up to you, though I think a nice heel would look very sophisticated.” Nice recovery? Not really. Luckily she had already noticed he was a little uncomfortable in this field, so maybe she would think it was just that. No need to let her know he was thinking he liked her only coming up to his chest, it would make it easier to tangle his fingers in her hair and tip her head back when he kissed her. Why was he acting like such an idiot? It had to be that…look in her eyes. That mysterious look.

She was scruitinizing clothing after he mentioned her looking sexy in pink, and she didn’t even blush like a stop sign as she had in the past. Maybe she was finally looking at herself as a young woman? He hoped so, because he saw her that way.

“A twinkle and a smile, means the inch you give will turn to her mile” It was saying his dad used to tell him, and wow did it hold true for this girl. She floored him with that little playful grin and those eyes lighting up like the stars in the night sky. “Pick something out I like? I.. well I’ll give it a shot. No promises on what I might bring back though. I can barely dress myself properly. You’d be surprised the days my ex wife used to say that pulled all my clothes out of the closet with the lights off and my eyes closed.” He chuckled softly and shook his head. “Then again, she was kind of a bitch.”

It was just then, she asked him about his marriages. So he was a ladies man was he? Sporting a new trophy on his arm at every occasion? He laughed ruefully and shook his head. “Sweetheart, I think that’s about as far from the truth as it gets. I have been married twice, and while that does seem like a lot for being only thirty, neither of my marriages lasted long. My first wife just wanted my money. I was young and stupid the first time around. A pretty face and a kiss or two is usually enough to scramble any man’s wits. I’m just as much a man as the next. However, I am good at reading people, and it didn’t take me long to see just what she was really after. My second wife well just remember, you asked about it. She didn’t listen very well to the marriage vows I guess. “To have and to hold” means you actually have to have sex with your husband. I think she was more interested in the security I could offer her, than me as a man. Despite trying on my part she didn’t seem to want any part of me. I ended the marriage because to be honest with you, it’s much easier to do without and not have my needs met when I’m not sharing the same bed, not waking up next to her, not seeing her every day. The vows are a promise, and I don’t break promises, so I had to let her go.”

He drew a deep breath and gave her a slightly sad smile. “Since then I’ve sort of thrown myself into my work. At this point I’m not sure I’d have a lot of time to give to a woman if I didn’t work with them. It wouldn’t be fair. At this point I’ll see you a lot more than I would see any woman I had a romantic relationship. The only time I set aside to spend with a woman is at the spa. When I get really stressed out my shoulders go all out of whack and nearly lock up. It’s an old injury, that likes to be a reminder I’m working too hard. That’s about the most physical I’ve been with a woman in years. Sad to admit but it is the truth.”

He realized then he had just admitted to having an epic dry spell to this young girl who is supposed to manage his schedules. She probally thought he was a total pervert and trying to put the moves on her. He put his face in his hands and shook his head. “I’m sorry Pearl, I shouldn’t be telling you about that. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, my tongue just got to flapping. Forgive me I didn’t mean to upset you if I did.” He winced, his shoulder popped again. Yep too much stress. “I didn’t sleep well last night, it’s been a really hard week.”

Salvation, in the form of a sales woman came sauntering up. She asked after help and he nodded gratefully.

“I’m going to start work for this gentleman on Monday as a personal girl Friday; I have no idea what to wear other than dresses.”

Personal girl huh? He liked the sound of that way too much and he gave Pearl a questioning look, but she was already being herded off by the sales woman. The sales woman gave him a glance and a knowing smile. She recognized him, and apparently she had heard those same rumors. That was glaringly obvious by the dresses she picked out for Pearl.

He took a few moments to walk around. He still had a deal to hold to with Pearl. He glanced around for quite a while and looked at many things. He picked out several and usually put it right back as he got a better look at it. So many of these he pictured hugging Pearls frame, and he realized he would get absolutely no work done with her wearing them. He wouldn’t be able to get her out of his mind. Then again, some of these dresses looked like they could be undergarments! Hmmmm that might be because he had wandered into the personal apparel section. He laughed at himself, nothing for it and walked back through to the dresses. He apparently already couldn’t get her out of his mind.

He needed a sobering moment, so he picked up the cell phone and called information, a few moments later and he hung it up. There, now the school knew Pearl would be on half days from now on, she would be able to start right away on Monday. It was then that he came across something that caught his eye. It was sort of one of those little black cocktail dress women always seemed to have. Strapless, with an open back that came around just above the small, or so he estimated. The front would show a little cleavage, but it looked very form fitting. He had it in his hands and he was seeing her wearing this for him in a very inappropriate manner. “Jason, I’m ready” He heard her say in his head in a smokey, come hither tone. He felt the front of his pants suddenly become a little more confining and he caught his breath trying to run away with him. He heard that phrase again, this time it was a curious tone. Fantasy shattered and he blinked, she was peeking out of the dressing room at him. He should put it back, he knew he should, but he kept it in his hands. He couldn’t come to her empty handed.

He watched as she came out in the first dress and he couldn’t have stopped himself if he wanted to. When she stepped out he whistled through his teeth and sat up in his char. His eyes devoured her body inch by inch. He noticed how it showed him a rather generous view of her chest, almost as good as the swim suit top she had worn the first time he met her. As she turned and posed for him he slid his eyes over her and just sat there. Staring. He should be saying something, shouldn’t he? Right. Move your lips bonehead. “Wow. That looks great. I…Just that’s a keeper, definitely.” Turns out many more of them were keepers, they only tossed out 2 of the 7 to be replaced.

As the show wore on he found he was really enjoying this. Really enjoying it. He was glad for the fact that he was sitting down because by the time she got to dress three he could feel himself straining against the front of his pants, as each dress they kept was tried on, he leaned closer and closer. By dress five, she could figure out which dresses he liked, just by the shift in his body language, before he said a single word. The way he looked at her was purely without subterfuge. Plain as day, he was appreciating the view. He just hoped his arousal could not be seen, but frankly if she noticed it, he didn’t care. Then came the last one..

She stepped out and he felt his mouth go dry. He swallowed hard, and visibly. He never heard a damn word the sales lady said, and didn’t notice her departure. His eyes were for Pearl, and Pearl alone. His body language screamed of how much he liked this one. He was far too intent on looking at it, and he had plainly forgotten he was supposed to tell her. Somehow, what the dress showed, and what it hid, was even more enticing than seeing her in shorts and a bikini. He didn’t know how that was possible. The only thing he knew right now was that he was rock hard, and it was a good thing they were in a public place. He wasn’t sure he could muster much of the proper attitude any other way. Finally he was able to speak and his tone was altered, nearly breathless. “I want you to keep that one, but only on one condition. You have to wear it to dinner tonight with me. There will be no one expecting you home, and otherwise I’ll have to spend the evening all by myself. We can call it a business meeting, I’ll brief you on some of the clients, or we can just enjoy each others company. Doesn’t really matter to me, as long as your answer is yes.”

He had totally forgotten the dress he had picked out for her, it sat next to him without a thought. “Besides. If I go home and have no plans I’ll have nothing to do but work, and I’ve had far too much fun today to think about doing that when I get home.”

“Pick something out I like? I… well I’ll give it a shot. No promises on what I might bring back though. I can barely dress myself properly. You’d be surprised the days my ex wife used to say that pulled all my clothes out of the closet with the lights off and my eyes closed.” He said as she laughed thinking that was a line of bull as she seen him twice and unless he had hired help dressing him both times he looked great in her eyes, even better than great, he was so handsome, his features were sharp and defined. “Then again, she was kind of a bitch.” Pearl gave him a funny look when he called his ex a bitch, she left it go and just continued on with what they were doing.

Pearl listened as he spoke to her about his marriages; it wouldn’t have bothered her if he had been married as many times as the rumors said. She figured that sometimes you needed to kiss a lot of frogs to find that one prince and other times you just settle thinking what you thought was the one really wasn’t. To her marriage was something that when she did it, she was in it for ever, good and bad hand in hand. Some may have thought it as a fairytale thought but she didn’t care, Pearl knew what she wanted in her prince and that was all that mattered, when she found him she would know when it got serious enough to get to that point, but that was a long time off, she was a young woman with plans.

He continued to talk and she continued to listen to him, she loved the sound of his voice, she would glance over to him and watched how his lips formed letters and words as she wondered how soft they were, how good they tasted. Pearl never had thoughts like that for another, she had feelings for Flip but he and Jason were so different and yet alike in things they wanted out of life in a way.

“I’m sorry Pearl, I shouldn’t be telling you about that. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, my tongue just got to flapping. Forgive me I didn’t mean to upset you if I did.” Pearl smiled and reached caressing his hand let released it with a smile. Out of nowhere she heard the pop of his shoulder and looked to him, it sounded as if it would have hurt. “Yep too much stress…I didn’t sleep well last night; it’s been a really hard week.” She nodded in agreement thinking he needed to see a masseuse or have another massage his shoulders.

“I didn’t have the best night of sleep either. It was hotter inside the trailer than it was outside. Its More frustrating than anything when you’re covered with sweat trying to sleep.” They moved on searching for clothing, pecking through pieces just talking.

“I asked the question and you didn’t upset me and I respect you for being honest with me, that does mean a lot and everything you said, none of it upset me. I can see how it would be hard having a relationship if your always working or traveling around, it’s hard nobody liked the feeling of being lonely either. I feel that way a lot and its maybe one of the worst feelings in the world. My life would have been so different I think if my father didn’t pass away when I was so young….” She stopped there and turned looking about the racks and chatting with the sales woman that offered her services as she shooed Jason away and left her do her job in helping pearl.

Walking out she watched as he looked her over in the first outfit and then spoke up. “Wow. That looks great. I…Just that’s a keeper, definitely.” She smiled hearing his words, he made her feel like a lady, a young sexy woman and she wasn’t even shying up for a change. In a way that scared her, it showed her how comfortable she was with him in such a short amount of time. To pearl it felt as if she knew him forever and not just a day or so.

Each dress she came out in seemed to place a smile on his face as she twirled and posed. His face told her everything and the way he moved or didn’t move, and by the time they were done she had decided the seven outfits she wanted and the few she disliked or he disliked. It was the last one she walked out in, the black dress with the pumps on her feet giving her that extra sashay in her walk as she stopped before him letting him gaze over the one country girl that he first met when she was wearing a bikini top and cut off jean shorts with summer flip flops.

Now before him was a young girl, a moth that went into its cocoon and came out as a beautiful young woman with sexy curves and looked a few years older than what she was. If anyone had seen pearl they would have never guessed that was the same ‘country’ girl they either made fun of or told her she would never amount to anything but white trailer trash.

Anyone would be able to feel the confidence that radiated from her at that moment, her smile and eyes could light up all of Dallas and Houston and still have more to power another big city if needed. Pearl waited for his opinion on the dress, she knew it would be good just by the look in his eyes and the way he sat up perfectly straight while his eyes ran over her slowly.

Doesn’t really matter to me, as long as your answer is yes.” Her head cocked and her arm lifted running her hands through her long hair as she tossed it all to the side and nibbled slightly on her bottom lip. “Besides. If I go home and have no plans I’ll have nothing to do but work, and I’ve had far too much fun today to think about doing that when I get home.” Pearl grinned.

Pearl thought about it for a moment and smiled to him as she walked over to him and stopped right before him looking down to him as she reached and her fingers curled around the hanger hook of the dress he had aside him. She lifted it up and looked it over and then lowered it down before her, “and you said you didn’t have taste. This is a beautiful dress; I’ll try it on for you and show you how good of taste you have.” She turned and headed back to the dressing room; she stopped at the entrance and looked back over her shoulder. “The way I see it is you must have good taste you picked me to work for you.” She blushed and disappeared for a few minutes then returned.

Pearl stepped out in the dress he picked for her and walked towards him stopping about three feet from where he was sitting and twirled slowly before him. “If I say yes to dinner I’ll wear this one, we’ll call it a bonus dress, you can buy this one and I’ll pay for the others giving you a part of my check each week, it’s the only way I’ll do it and be happy knowing I paid for my clothing.”

Pearl knew he wasn’t buying her clothing from pity, and she respected that, she respected him but she didn’t want a hand out she wanted to earn and pay her way in life for everything. Some might call that a downfall, some may call it pride, but Pearl just needed to pay her own way. Accepting gifts from another was hard for her, and it was showing as she offered her arrangement to him and waited to see if he would agree to her terms.

He had listened well when she spoke, he seemed to be almost hanging on her words, but that could not be could it? He was the sort of man who people hung on his words. No one disarmed him and charmed him off his feet, it just wasn’t the way of the world. Well looks like the world might be changing. “I didn’t have the best night of sleep either. It was hotter inside the trailer than it was outside. Its More frustrating than anything when you’re covered with sweat trying to sleep.”

He let his mind linger over that statement for just a moment too long. Instead of just recognizing it, processing it, and moving on, his mind pictured her bare body, laying in bed next to him covered in a sheen of sweat, though it was not a product of the heat at all, it was a product of the way their bodies moved together in the act of pleasure. It took a supreme effort of will to force that thought away and turn his attention back to Pearl. He thought for the briefest moment he saw a bead of sweat slide down the curve of her throat and plunge into the neck line of her dress. His eyes fluttered shut, and then open again as he cleared his head.

He watched, amazed at the transformation that took hold of her from the very first dress. It was a common saying that ‘clothes makes the man’ apparently it was no different for women. He could see it in her eyes, the way her lips were parted slightly in excitement, they way her gaze held a light haze to it when she looked him over. She felt like a young sexy woman, she could feel the power of her body radiating off her, and turning every male head in the area. That first dress transformed her from a kitten, to a lioness on the prowl, and he could practically feel the electricity in her gaze. God he loved it!

Each dress that was kept only compounded this change in her. As they neared the last one she was moving and swaying almost like a dancer, or a model. Her eyes twinkled in an almost intoxicated light. Her presence was powerful, yet still that demure little girl came through just as much as she had before, except she had become more, she was the same, but more focused, like a razor blade freshly sharpened. He presence washed over him like a tsunami crushing a sand bar. His body was helpless to resist the change she brought in him. He was suddenly oh so aware of himself. The feel of his clothing as it shifted against his skin, the pounding in his heart as it tried to run away without him. The throbbing in his groin that cried out for release, in only a way she could give him.

She stepped close with the last dress she had put on, the one that made him forget how to work his mouth. With each step closer his body tensed more and more. He looked like a coiled spring, ready to jolt into action as the distance finally closed so she was just close enough were he could reach out and touch her, if he dare. His eyes ached to devour her skin once more, but he made himself look her straight in the eyes. He couldn’t hide the way she was making him feel, he didn’t bother to try. Somehow he managed to look dignified, even though he was more aroused than he had been in more than a couple years. His lips parted slowly and his tongue escaped fleetingly to draw moisture along them. They remained parted, in a method that very much looked like an invitation for a kiss.

Her slightest movement drew his eyes, and he watched her run her fingers through her long hair. He smiled at the gesture. He watched the hair bounce back into place slowly, and he reached out a strong hand slowly. He felt his muscles strain and groan in complaint to the movement, but he ignored the discomfort of his shoulder. His thumb lightly brushed a single strand of her hair away from the side of her mouth, his thumb faintly brushing the curve of her sweet, tempting lips. Where her eyes were bright and full of enough energy to make a power plant jealous, his eyes were a raging inferno, ready to consume each and every bit of herself she could offer him and ask for more. Yet that emotion in his eyes was mingled with something else that proclaimed control. He held himself in a tight reign, even if his body could not be stopped. He would choose when, if ever to release the flood gate.

She leaned closer to him, tipping her head. Was this really about to become a kiss? He heard plastic on plastic as she took up the hanger from the chair and he chuckled to himself. Of course not. However when she had come that close to him there was a sudden explosion around him in the form of his natural scent. His own masculine scent had been prominent as soon as she came near him, but now so close she could smell another scent mixed in with it. His desire manifesting itself in her olfactory sensation. It was the natural order of things, the way two beings of the opposite sex communicated with one another. His body was broadcasting how much he wanted for her, and being so close, she had no choice but to receive the message loud and clear.

“and you said you didn’t have taste. This is a beautiful dress; I’ll try it on for you and show you how good of taste you have.” She paused at the door, giving him a look and then spoke again. “The way I see it is you must have good taste you picked me to work for you.” He couldn’t stop a gentle chuckle as she disappeared into the dressing room again with a blush on her cheeks. There was something new in his laughter that was not there before. A smooth strong overtone that had a feeling of hunger. Not many women had heard him laugh like that and most that did later confessed that it left their body awash in an intense tingling sensation, almost like his voice was caressing their skin.

When he returned his eyes fastened to her immediately. He smiled, pleased with himself for having picked out something that looked so good on her. It was definitely a great dress, though it was not an office dress, it was a dress for special events, and she would get use out of it in the days to come, of that he was sure. As she stepped out he stood up. Too late he thought of the fact that his manhood was pressing fiercely against the front of his jeans. As he stood, his arousal shifted, nestling against his thigh, though the bulge was still plain to see. Too late for modesty now. Each time he moved he was sure it would draw attention, but he only hoped that if she saw it, which he figured she would, that she would take it as a compliment, that just watching her had envoked that emotion in him. She was a young sexy woman, and his body was telling her that without the faintest hint of doubt. He perked a brow slowly at her proposition. That chuckle dripped from his mouth again, and his eyes danced with a hint of amusement. “My dearest Pearl. Are you playing hardball with me? Very well, I can’t very well argue with you when you look as good as you do in that dress. It’s not quite fair you know.. You have yourself an agreement.” As he spoke the beginning of that sentence, he seemed to be tasting her name, caressing it with his tongue. He reached out to give her hand a shake, but as she accepted it he turned her hand over and slowly brought it to his lips. Looking down into her eyes he gave her a grin and pressed a tender kiss to the back of her hand. His lips were so soft against her skin and the kiss was far too brief. As it broke he did not move however, he spoke, his breath brushing against freshly kissed skin. “Then we have an accord. I think next time you want to make a deal with a man you should put on one of these dresses, it’s a great way to get what you want.” He chuckled again, at himself, at her, at the whole situation. It dissipated into a slight rumble in his chest, almost like a growl, but it did not sound fierce at all. “Now let us go ahead and pick up the rest of what you need, then we can talk about what you want to have for dinner.”

Just like that he was back in control of himself and assuming her answer. She could say no of course, though most people found saying no to him was like trying to derail a train with a penny.

Pearl could hear his chuckle even inside the dressing room and she smiled and laughed herself as she dressed in his pick and then exited and walked closer to him letting him admire her not from a distance but up close and personal as she watched him stand and looked over him as she dropped her eyes and slowly brought them back up along his body.

There was no way she could have missed the bulge in his tight fitting jeans, pearl blushed beet red and quickly looked away and looked for anything that could draw her attention to it like a red dress that was just hanging alone to the left side of her on a rack.

That brought back memories of when she had a date with a kid named Danny when she first started her senior year, he took her to the local movie theater and half way through the movie he pulled the old trick with putting his arm around her and feeling her breasts till she got so uncomfortable that she got up and went to the bathroom just to make him stop.

When she returned to her seat he took her hand in his and held it as they watched the movie and before she knew it he had her rubbing his cock through his jeans feeling how hard he was. He leaned over and whispered how horny he was and how hard his cock was from just the sight of her and the feel of her tit in his hand, needless to say that was the end of Danny and their one and only date.

The next day at school he started rumors about her and how she put out for him, how he had her giving him a head job in the movie theater. Pearl was crushed, it took her a little bit to get past that and for another rumor to take its place, and luckily it wasn’t about her this time. She just wasn’t interested in him or knew him well enough to even go anywhere with him sexually.

Flip was a whole different story she was so ready and willing to give it up to him, but no matter how hard she tried he turned her away, he said he had his reasons. Pearl found out later that he wouldn’t do it because he would get emotionally involved with her and he didn’t; want that when he was leaving there as soon as he had enough money to do so. That made her give up every trying again with him and she pushed her sexual feeling down, suppressing them.

Jason was the first man since her attraction to Flip that turned her on, Miss mills told her that her first time should be special, which somebody she cared for but pearl was having these feelings and to be honest she masturbated now and then just to make them go away but it wasn’t enough anymore. This was a man she was going to work for, one she knew little about and again the pushed those feelings down and stopped looking blow his belt and back up to his eyes again as she caught a chuckle linger from his lips.

“My dearest Pearl, are you playing hardball with me? Very well, I can’t very well argue with you when you look as good as you do in that dress. It’s not quite fair you know...You have yourself an agreement.”

He took her hand in his and their eyes danced within each others, holding that gaze as she felt his lips on the back of her hand placing a tender kiss as her knees felt as if they were going to buckle out from under her. “Then we have an accord. I think next time you want to make a deal with a man you should put on one of these dresses, it’s a great way to get what you want.”

Pearl laughed, “that wasn’t my intention to lure you into agreement, but if it worked good!” She laughed out and smirked as her eyes sparkled and her heart raced.

“Now let us go ahead and pick up the rest of what you need, then we can talk about what you want to have for dinner.” Pearl nodded as they collected a few more items, shoes and intimate apparel that she picked out without his help, that would have made her feel uncomfortable. Once they were done she watched as he paid for it, when she heard the total amount she sucked in a breath as if she gasped and exhaled slowly. She knew she would be paying him off for a while and prayed to god that the job worked out and she could do all he wanted to pay it off.

He helped her with the bags as they headed towards the doors, “I don’t know what to say other than thank you Jason, nobody have ever…ever done anything this special for me in my whole life….I swear I’ll pay you back every cent, I mean it too. I’ve never not kept my word ever.”

He opened the door for her and they stepped out of the store, Pearl walked and looked like a million dollars, she walked with confidence, and had a spring in her step even more than earlier. As they reached the mustang she turned to him, “Nothing to do with seafood anything else I’m game.”

Oh she had definitely seen how aroused he was, and he could tell she saw it because she turned red enough to make a fire truck jealous. He felt no shame or embaresment in the way his body reacted to her. She was a gorgeous woman, she had everything a man could want. She was beautiful, smart, funny, she had this natural life about her, this love to just be alive that was intoxicating. It spread to him like a wild fire in a forest.

She came close to let him look and oh how close he almost came to touching. It would have been wonderful for a moment, then it would have been terrible. He knew she wasn’t ready for that, he could read it in her. She was comfortable with him, but not that comfortable. It took tremendous effort not to touch her, but he managed, barely.

Her laughter was magical. It almost always was followed by his own. There was music in her voice. “that wasn’t my intention to lure you into agreement, but if it worked good!” He gave her a wicked, but playful grin and nodded his head. “I know you did not, but I’m just hoping you will not remember this when it comes time to ask for a raise.” His eyes danced with mirth.

The cash register total was sizable, but it didn’t seem to phase him. He was well off, but he was smart with his spending so he could do things like this if they came up. What good was money if you couldn’t use it to enjoy time with people who mattered? He saw Pearl’s reaction to the tag and reached down to give her shoulder a gentle, reassuring squeeze.

“I don’t know what to say other than thank you Jason, nobody have ever…ever done anything this special for me in my whole life….I swear I’ll pay you back every cent, I mean it too. I’ve never not kept my word ever.”

He smiled toward her, and didn’t reply right away. As they walked their way to the car, she spoke about not being a big fan of Sea food. When he loaded the bags into the car, and held the door for her to get in, he got a nice eye full of her supple legs as they folded into the vehicle. Walking around to the drivers seat he settled in and turned to smile at her. “I respect that you want to be responsible for yourself, and be your own person. That is part of what makes you so unique, and part of why you are deserving of them being gifts. However if it is your wish to repay me, then I will not refuse you. I have every ounce of faith that you will do what you say you will do. You’ve already shown me a great measure of your character, and I like what I see.”

His eyes held hers for a long time after his words faded. He seemed like he wanted to say more, or perhaps do something, but in the end he let his eyes embrace her body one more time and with a grin and then the engine fired up.

They were on the road again, but several times his eyes shifted back over to her, not always making eye contact, and not always taking in her figure. A healthy mixture of both. He never let it endanger them as they drove, but he certainly cast her a lot of appreciative looks. At one point he spoke softly, as if to mutter to himself, but he made sure it was loud enough for her to hear. “Enough to make a man forget his own name… Mercy!” He was making it a point to reinforce that image to her, that she was a gorgeous woman, and that she should embrace it.

As they headed on toward her trailer park he paused at the entrance and gave her a playful smile. He put the car in park and turned his gaze toward her, his eyes glittering. “I saw the way you looked at your young friend yesterday, and the way he looked at you. I’m not the only one who thinks your beautiful. I’m just not simply afraid to admit it to myself, or to you. One of these days, maybe you should pay him a visit with your new clothing, and show him just what kind of woman he has denied himself. I don’t know the circumstances, but I cannot think of a circumstance big enough to deny what I felt.” He shook his head slowly. “Half the time he was looking at you like he was your big brother, and the other half like he was stranded in the desert and you were the only water for miles. Sounds like a classic case of the brain getting in the way of things. This..” He reached out, drawing his large index finger along her side, drawing an imaginary line from her side roughly about chest high, down to about in line with her navel. “Would certainly be enough to shut off his brain for a while. I know it nearly does it for me.” Was he encouraging her to go show herself off to the boy who has constantly pushed her away? Hell yes. Let her feel empowered by who she was. “Just a thought”

he shrugged and then pulled off toward her trailer. Again he opened the door for her, extending his hand to help her out of the seat. He walked her to her front door and smiled at her, waiting to make sure she was able to get in fine, then he carried all the bags to the door. “I believe this makes us even now. The first day I was dressed much more finely than you, and now you out shine me like the brightest star in the sky. I don’t like loosing. I’ll have to see if I can’t top you tonight.” His grin was broad and his eyes danced. “I’m going to send someone for you in about four hours. If you need me before then, or really any time, here is my personal number. Call me day or night for any reason.” He smiled at her and then turned to go. Then he stopped and looked at her again. “Oh and Pearl? Thank you, I’ve had a wonderful day so far, and I think it will just get better from here. I’ll see you in a little while.” With that he turned and got into his car. He didn’t fire up the engine until she had gotten herself inside safely and closed the door.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He hurried home and for the first hour or so he was a flurry of phone calls. Then it was in the shower, scrubbing down. He let the water beat down on his body for a long time after the soap had faded. He closed his eyes and just thought about her. His mind coming back to the store when she was posing for him. He felt himself becoming instantly aroused again and chided himself gently. He couldn’t afford to keep tormenting himself like this, and he didn’t have time to release his stress the way he really wanted to. With a grunt he turned the hot water off and let the ice cool water settle the situation for him.

The next hour flew by as the caterer came and went. He set the table himself, laying out a bottle of wine, and a bottle of non-alcoholic grape juice in case she did not want to drink. Both chilled in clear crystal pitchers of ice. The food was lain out on the table. It was a smaller table, set for just two, for an intimate setting. Covered with a thick white cloth. Candles in brass and silver sticks were lit by the time the limo pulled up with her inside.

Meanwhile right on time, the limo had been sent to Pearls trailer. A well dressed man strode up and knocked on the door with a single long stemmed rose in his hand. As the young lady answered he smiled and offered his hand. “Ms. Barrows, hello. I come on behalf of Mr. Steward. He awaits your arrival with anticipation and sends this, for not being able to come himself.” He handed her the long stemmed flower and then offered a hand.

He felt his shoulder stiffen as he settled himself into one of his better suits and tried to rub it out himself without much success. It was taking longer to get ready than he wanted, and the limo arrived just as he was managing to get his tie tied properly. Pearl was escorted inside just as he strode out of his bedroom, making the last few adjustments. Smoothing his lapels, and straightening the tie.

The driver led her through the well furnished house, and into the dining room where Jason was standing. Suit was cut very well, tailored specifically for him. It showed off broad shoulders and his tone figure very well. Black with subtle white pinstripes lined the coat and matching pants. The white button up shirt was tied in with a black, grey, and white stripped tie. He smiled and nodded to the driver. “Thanks a bunch for coming in on your day off frank. I owe you one. Tell Cynthia I’ll make it up to her this week for letting me have her husband on a weekend.” He gave a nod and thanks and then excused himself.

Not that Jason really noticed, his eyes were focused on Pearl and he closed the distance toward her. Extending his hand with a warm inviting smile that made his eyes glow. “You look fantastic. Welcome to my home. I hope you don’t mind I didn’t actually cook. To be honest I can’t cook all that well to begin with. Let alone on such short notice.”

“I know you did not, but I’m just hoping you will not remember this when it comes time to ask for a raise.” The statement caused her head to cock and her smile turn into this impish grin as she gave him a coy look.

Pearl handed him the bags she had and felt them slip from her fingers as he placed them into the car and then once again he made her feel special as he had been all day opening the car door for her and letting her get in before closing it. She watched as he walked around the car and took his place in the driver’s seat, her hand smoothed over her bare legs as she looked down at the dress she was wearing.

“I respect that you want to be responsible for yourself, and be your own person. That is part of what makes you so unique, and part of why you are deserving of them being gifts. However if it is your wish to repay me, then I will not refuse you. I have every ounce of faith that you will do what you say you will do. You’ve already shown me a great measure of your character, and I like what I see.” His voice caused her to look his way seeing the smile as she listened to him talk.

Nodding her head in a yes fashion she reached up pushed the hair from her face and looked back into his eyes, “thank you, and I haven’t done anything to deserve them …yet.” Their gaze held again as nothing was said, it was a silent moment but not one of being uncomfortable with nothing to say, Pearl just bit her bottom lip and left the discussion drop. He turned away and started up the car, she watched where they were going, and then smiled once again looking over her body wrapped within a brand new dress that was far more fancier than anything she had ever owned in her life. She had a hard time believing she actually was wearing it, every now and then her hand would smooth over it again just for reassurance.

“Enough to make a man forget his own name… Mercy!” She thought he heard him say as she giggled this soft laugh and then looked over to him catching his eyes reverting back to the road ahead of them. She knew the more she was around him the more she would enjoy his time and enjoy his company, what woman her age wouldn’t. The man made her feel like a million and one dollar princess.

As pearl wished he headed toward town again taking her back home so she could do something with her hair and drop off the clothing at where she lived, in a way she was a little embarrassed about living in a trailer park verses what he probably lived in but it was a roof over her and her mother’s head and it wasn’t in bad shape, it was always clean and the inside was in good condition.

He brought up Flip out of the blue as she turned looking to him and listening what he had to say, he seemed to pick up a lot from just a casual meeting with them both. Pearl sighed and turned putting the window down and letting the fresh air blow the hair back from her face watching everything move past them.

When he touched her, her body didn’t tense up, if anything just the opposite as she sat there and felt her body puddle into the seat. “Flip has no interest in me in a girlfriend boyfriend relationship. He’s been telling me that he will be leaving Welcome as soon as he has enough money to do it, he doesn’t want to hang around a town where there is nothing for him. He has his dreams and I have mine. He thinks starting anything with me would only make him want to stay and I respect that.”

Swallowing hard she really wouldn’t mind showing him what he was leaving behind but it wasn’t worth the heartache that would come from it in the end. “I-I well I tried to …” she stopped there and just dropped what she was going to say, “lets just say there isn’t anything between him and I he liked loose girls that he can pick up in town when he’s drinking with the boys, one’s that wouldn’t hold him back from his plans. It’s a mess of a situation, it took me long enough to realize he was right…no big deal, I have my own plans in life.”

Pearl leaned against him as the took a hard corner and turned into the trailer park, she pointed out the white one with a small picket fence around the lot with flowers in bloom adding an array of colors and brightness. When he pulled up before it she sat there and waited for him to walk around and open her door, she didn’t expect it but she knew he would do it.

Taking his hand she squeezed it as he helped her out, “you don’t always have to do that yanno that right?” she asked him as he closed the door behind her and walked her to the steps of the porch and watched as she opened the door after finding the hidden key above the door frame. She turned around to invite him in when she realized he was back at the car getting the bags.

The heat rushed out from the trailer as she stood there waiting for him. Pearl pushed it open all the way and walked in standing there as he came up with the bags and she took then from him and placed them on the chair in the livingroom. “I believe this makes us even now. The first day I was dressed much more finely than you, and now you out shine me like the brightest star in the sky. I don’t like loosing. I’ll have to see if I can’t top you tonight.” Pearl laughed.

“I’m going to send someone for you in about four hours. If you need me before then, or really any time, here is my personal number. Call me day or night for any reason.” Taking the card with his number on it she smiled and nodded

“Thank you Jason for everything I can’t say it enough and I’m looking forwards to time with you tonight.” Her smile seemed to be never ending as she looked to him, she watched him smile back and then turn to walk out the door.

He hit the door and looked back at her, she was watching him go, her eyes danced over his body and she realized he had a great ass in those jeans. “Oh and Pearl? Thank you, I’ve had a wonderful day so far, and I think it will just get better from here. I’ll see you in a little while.”

“I did as well, see you then Jason.” She replied and walked to the door closing it behind him as she watched him get into his car and leave, Pearl watched till he disappear from sight. Turning around she carried all the bags into her bedroom and undressed down to her bra and panties, each dress she held up before her looking at her self in the mirrored door of her closet. She decided to wear the same one she had on, it was a bit dressier than the rest. Grabbing her summer dress that was crumpled up in the bag she ran out the door with the black one to Miss. Mills trailer and knocked as she tried to regain her breath.

She watched as the older woman opened the door, “girl you need to slow down what’s got you all excited? Come in, come in.” she said holding the screen door open for Pearl. She entered the trailer looking around, there was two areas she had one was specifically for her sewing area and the other was her painting area filled with canvas covered frames of all sizes and shapes and an easel, and various other artist materials. Pearl held the dress up, the tag still dangling from it as she chuckled realizing she never had it removed when she left the store.

“O-o-o wee! That’s a fancy dress missy…you didn’t steal that pearl did you?” she asked pearl giving her one of her serious faces.

“No, no ma’am I didn’t steal it, it was a gift, I don’t have much time to explain it all to you I’m having a dinner...I guess it’s a business date or something with Mr. Steward. I start work with him on Monday, I needed office clothing and little odds and ends to work there so he offered to pay for everything and I said only if I could pay him back and he agreed. This dress he picked out and it’s the one I want to wear but it needs dry cleaned and pressed and I have no clue how to do it in four hours so I came to see you for help.”

“Slow down missy, I’ll take care of it but you better watch out for this man, he’s got a bad reputation with the ladies, a playboy folks say.” Miss. Mills took the dress from pearl as she proceeded to lecture her about older men and what they want from young girls like pearl. Pearl didn’t want to appear rude so she stood there listening and agreeing watching as the older woman ran a sink of water adding whatever she did to it and began to soak the dress. Pearl leaned against the kitchen counter and watched her learning from her.

An hour had quickly went by and she wasn’t done with the dress yet, pearl explained to her she needed to go home and get a shower and would return for the dress when she was finished, Miss mills nodded and told her to run along but to keep her legs shut tonight. Pearl giggled softly as she ran out the trailer door, down the porch steps and down the gravel road to her own entering it as she showered and began to get ready.

She turned on the radio and danced as she got dressed, a black pair of panties, she went into her mother’s room and found a pair of black thigh highs and put those on, then sat at the small vanity and started drying her hair and played with it trying to find a look she liked that made her look older than what she really was.

Pearl put her hair up on her head in a pile of curls like her mother did to her own, she watched her enough times to know how to do it, allowing two long spiral curls dangling down the sides of her face framing it. She knew how to do make-up so she added a bit to her face just enough to make her eyes ‘pop’ and her cheeks show her high cheek bones, her lips she applied a nice light pink to make them stand out.

Pleased with her look she smiled, and placed her robe on and went out to get a drink, just as she exited the kitchen she heard a sound and knew it was Flip in his old truck, she went to the door and peeked out he carried something over his arm a plastic bag. He came up to the door and she opened it for him, she watched as his jaw dropped as he seemed to forget what he was going to say. She let him in and he handed her the garment bag, pearl undid the zipper with excitement and pulled the fresh washed and pressed dress out holding it up.

Her and Flip started bantering back and forth, apparently he was told about where she was going and with who, he wasn’t pleased and it ended in an ugly argument with him walking out and her almost in tears. She tried to concentrate on what her night was going to be like pushing any thoughts of what happened out of her head. Stepping into the dress she pulled it up and zipped it and turned it slipping her arms into it and then reaching over her shoulder zipping it up the rest of the way. Pearl felt like a princess, by the time she heard another car drive up she knew it wasn’t Flip again, she opened the door and she looked to the man dresses in a drivers uniform, looking past him she seen the limo and then looked back to him.

“Ms. Barrows, hello. I come on behalf of Mr. Steward. He awaits your arrival with anticipation and sends this, for not being able to come himself.” He said to her offering her a red rose.

Taking the rose she was ready to go, she locked the door and followed him out letting him help her into the car, she sat alone looking around, there could have never been a more wonderful day than that one. She watched out the darkened window where she was going when they arrived to his house she was in awe. He stopped the car before the house and helped her out, he escorted her inside as she looked around almost stumbling not paying attention.

“Good lord” she said spinning around in a circle just looking up to the high ceilings and taking it all in. the dress fit her even better now that it was cleaned, she could hear the sound of her heels tapping on the flooring as she took each step. Pearl followed the driver as he led her into the dinning room where she immediately saw the table set up and it about took her breath away.

There he stood, he looked like he stepped out of the movie screen, pearl was taken back, and there couldn’t have been a more handsome man that him. Her eyes drank every inch of him in as he looked to her, she never even heard him speak to the driver, and she was in her own world. Pearl was brought back to reality when he walked over to her extending his hand, his arm to her “You look fantastic. Welcome to my home. I hope you don’t mind I didn’t actually cook. To be honest I can’t cook all that well to begin with. Let alone on such short notice.”

“Sorry Jason, this is a lot to take in, everything looks beautiful. “ she laughed as her arm hooked into his, “I can give you cooking lessons someday, its one of the things I am rather good at, I never killed anyone…yet.” Her head turned giving him a playful smirk.

Not much had passed between them as he had dropped her off. When she spoke about her relationship with Flip he shook his head slowly. Snorting through his nostrils as she spoke about him and his habbits. “Well it’s good for me that he doesn’t know a good woman if she’d have bit him on his rump because he doesn’t like me, that is for sure, and he’d not let you work for me if you both were together.” What little respect Jason had for the young Mexican boy was gone now. Not only had he cast Pearl aside like a fool, he had one night stands with easy women over taking care of a woman who nearly threw her heart at his feet, and her body, judging by the statement that she never finished. He touched her hand sweetly.

“you don’t always have to do that yanno that right?”

“Of course I know that Pearl.” He squeezed her hand in reply and smiled. “The least I can do is treat you proper, like a man should treat a woman. Seems like you’ve had a long time where no one was there to treat you right. Someone needs to make up for that lost time. Besides, it gives me an excuse to hold your hand.” The last delivered with a wink and another gentle squeeze.

He high cealings were cast in lurid shadows as the home was dimly lit. Candle light from the table provided most of the light they had. Though he had the lights on low, so that they wouldn’t have to squint to see each other. The sun had descended at this point.

“Sorry Jason, this is a lot to take in, everything looks beautiful.” “I can give you cooking lessons someday, its one of the things I am rather good at, I never killed anyone…yet.”

As she spun around and cast glances around at the wooden furniture, the hard wood floors, the den with the flat screen tv, and leather sofa, he just watched her with a warm smile. There was a look in his eyes that fond in nature. Almost like how a father would look at his favorite daughter. Though it was different enough, she was bloody gorgeous after all. “It’s ok sweetheart, take your time. I know it’s all so new and different. Your going to be experiencing all sorts of new things in the coming months, but I want you to tell me if things are happening too quickly, or if you become uncomfortable in any way. I like you Pearl, and I enjoy having you around, that last thing in my heart would be to do anything that would hurt you.”

His gaze, his voice, and his body language all spoke of sincerity as he finished that statement. He had turned toward her as he spoke, looking down into her eyes. Her arm was still curled around his lightly. Now that she was close enough, she could smell the scent he had adorned. It was not a heavy scent, but it was strong, earthy, with just a hint of a musk to it. Though beneath it she could clearly smell his own natural scent. The two blended exquisitely. He was still looked at her, and he cleared his throat. It took obvious effort to look away from those eyes. “C’mon, I hope your hungry. It’s not the most fancy meal in the world but it’s good food.”

Taking up his position at her side he led her to the table. As they approached it she could clearly see everything, the candle light reflecting off silverware, and the silver coverings that was keeping the food warm. He pulled out a chair for her with a slow smile and murmured warmly toward her. “I know, I know, I don’t have to, but I am enjoying myself having a woman around. Let me have my little pleasure ok?” His face was all mischief and amusement, remembering what she had said when he opened the door for her at the trailer. As she settled into her chair, he scooted it forward for her and smiled. It was a simple round table, but he had scooted the chairs close to one another so they could be closer, and talk while they ate. He pulled back the lids to the dishes and they folded into themselves to be out of the way.

Two well cut pieces of steak, mashed potates that gave off a faint scent of garlic and rosemary. A bowl of cezar salad topped with pomegranate seeds. Some whole kernel corn as a side dish.

He motioned to the two glasses and two bottles. “I have a bottle of wine here, and a non-alcoholic substitute. I wasn’t sure which you would prefer, so I wanted to give you the option. You’re a grown woman able to make your own choices, the only thing that I ask is that if you do take the wine, that you remain with me long enough to see that it’s out of your system before I send you home for the evening.”

He stood there behind his chair for a moment and then slowly slipped himself out of his jacket. As he did so he gave a painful wince. He felt his shoulders complaining under the movement. He settled the coat onto the back of his chair and slipped down into it. He turned toward her and scooped up her hand in his own, strong fingers encircling her smaller hand. “Please feel at home here kitten. My home is yours as long as you are here.”

He released her hand slowly and looked over the food with a smile. His gaze came back to her slowly, there was a smile in his eyes that seemed to mirror the one on his lips. “So, would you like me to serve? Or how shall we handle this?”

He couldn’t help himself. He let his eyes fall from her own, to her lips. His gaze lingered there for some time before drawing down her figure slowly once more. He did not hide his gaze even slightly. His smile slipped from his lips, as his face took on a mask of awe, and pleasure. The faintest hint of his teeth snaring his bottom lip was visible, until he spoke quietly. “I cannot get over how great you look Pearl. I guess your right. I have good taste after all.” He gave her a slow grin as his eyes finished their scan of her figure and raised once more. His eyes caught on her lips again and there was a twitch to his own lips that had the feel of a kiss for a second that betrayed his thoughts. Then his eyes met hers again. She had seen that smoldering look once before, when she was trying on dresses for him. He was just glad that this time the table cloth hid his excitement. He appeared to have completely forgotten about the food.

“Of course I know that Pearl.” He squeezed her hand in reply and smiled. “The least I can do is treat you proper, like a man should treat a woman. Seems like you’ve had a long time where no one was there to treat you right. Someone needs to make up for that lost time. Besides, it gives me an excuse to hold your hand.” He said to her as she caught the smile and wink.

“I thank you Jason; then again I can’t thank you enough for making me feel like a princess today.” Looking around he did live a life of grandeur, she wouldn’t ever hold it against him but she did in way envy him, ‘one day she told herself…one day it would be her living the same way, at least in her dreams.’ Her head turned she looked up to him and nodded, “I promise if it comes at me and gets to overwhelming I’ll tell you, though I’m sure you will see it before hand.” She laughed softly.

“I appreciate how you feel, I think you a wonderful man, one that doesn’t forget where he came from and doesn’t seem to let what he has make you feel inferior to those like myself that don’t have. I think that’s what shocks me the most with you and it’s sometimes hard to accept or take in when you do or say things.”

“C’mon, I hope you’re hungry. It’s not the fanciest meal in the world but its good food.” He said taking his eyes from hers as he led her to the fancy table. It was like stepping into a woman’s day magazine to pearl where they show you pictures of holiday tables set for fancy feasts and parties. She looked at the silverware and seen it was more than just the three basic ones, thank god for home economics class she thought as she looked at each piece knowing what they were used for, which course they went to.

He released her hand and held the back of the chair pulling it out for her as he talked softly to her ear. She could feel his warm breath upon her ear, the side of her face and down her neck making her swallow hard. Again she nodded feeling the twin dangling loose curls around her face brush against her cheeks, “it’s your home and your dinner, so that makes it your pleasure and I’ll not complain trust me Jason.”

She looked over and watched as he brought his chair around and closer to her as she picked up the linen napkin and placed it upon her lap after crossing her legs feeling her knees fit into one another and smiled watching him take the silver lids from the dishes of food and placing them aside. She looked and could smell the rosemary; everything looked great and smelled wonderful as her stomach growled.

As for a drink with the meal he gave her a choice, she was under age as far as the drinking age went but then she wasn’t driving and it wasn’t like she would get all drunk or anything and it wasn’t her first alcoholic beverage. I’ll take a glass of wine please and make it the non-virgin one.”

Pearl looked over the table setting again, the flames danced upon the silverware as she turned seeing him undress from his jacket and place it over the back of his chair and while he did she could see the facial expression he made and felt sorry for him she wanted to reach out and just massage his shoulders.

“Please feel at home here kitten. My home is yours as long as you are here.” He said as she turned her head and looked at him in a way he would have never seen before as she swallowed hard and tried not to get to overly emotional.

“MY father before he passed away always called me kitten, it was his little nickname he gave me mom said since I was born. He chose it because he said when I would move in anyways it was graceful like a feline so he named me kitten. Sounded funny hearing it from you when its getting harder and harder to hear his voice in my head as time goes on…and please don’t take that as a bad thing you calling me it, was nice to hear.” She offered a smile to him. “I appreciate you opening your home up to me like you have.’

Before he released hand once again she gave it a playful light squeeze and felt his slip from hers, ‘your home you do the honors, if it comes to me every cooking for you then I shall return the favor.” Though she really couldn’t see him showing up at the trailer to have a meal like he would be used to, that thought in it self was a little embarrassing. Pearl could see where coming from the opposite side of town from each other would be a slight problem in a relationship. Not that they would even have one but again she let her mind wonder.

“I cannot get over how great you look Pearl. I guess your right. I have good taste after all.” He said letting his eyes linger within hers, it wasn’t an awkward moment but it was one where she felt before a few times, in the coffee shop, in the store shopping, where she just wanted to taste his lips upon hers. Pearl had hoped he wouldn’t send her home right after the meal, she didn’t want to go home to an empty place and be alone, it was a feeling that was growing old fast.

Work for her would fill a void or two that she’s been feeling for the last couple months, in fact she couldn’t wait till she was through high school and graduating, it was four more weeks and she was going to get her diploma, it didn’t matter again if she didn’t graduate the old fashioned way with her class she just wanted to get on with her life and if things went well she had a great start with Jason’s offering of a job and his friendship. Pearl took nothing for granted.

The wie was pored and the meal was served, she took small bites and chewed slowly, the wine was great it had a really nice smell and flavor to it. She looked over to him and spoke, “tell me about you, growing up, your parents, places you been in the world.” Pearl really wanted to know him much better, she really wanted to know everything about the man she was now employed by and sharing a meal with.

“You know about me, dad passed away, mother still semi around, and I’ve never been anywhere travel wise. Very short story…” she chuckled a little but in a sense actually saying it was sad, ‘BUT one day…that will change I’ll travel the world” she said with much enthusiasm.

So far the dinner was going rather well. She was settled into her seat, and the chemistry between the two of them had not cooled off as he thought it might. He was worried that after he dropped her off, she might start being shy with him all over again. Much to his delight, she was the charming, sweet, and attractive woman he had dropped off. She hadn’t recoiled from what had happened between them. He had even given her looks speaking very clearly of desire, and she took them with a smile, or a kind word.

He served the both of them and reached for her glass. She actually accepted the wine, and not the version he expected. Perhaps she was feeling a little more grown up already? He wasn’t sure, and he wasn’t about to draw attention to the choice. A little voice crept into the back of his mind and whispered about getting her drunk, so that he could satisfy this desire for her that had been building since the first day they met. He crushed it ruthlessly. No, he would not betray the trust she had given him.

He set the wine back where he had retrieved it from and paid her a smile as he sat back down. He took a few bites of his food and let out a sigh. He had forgotten lunch today in his excitement with Pearl. The food tasted great and he let out a sigh. The hole in his middle started to feel a little sated already. He hoped it would water down his libido as well. No such luck unfortunately.

He saw the look on her face change when he had slipped and called her kitten. He could tell the look of a woman who was trying to hide emotions. When she spoke initially he frowned and looked about on the verge of a vehement apology. However he stopped she spoke of actually enjoying being reminded of that fond memory. He smiled slowly “As long as your sure, I’ll remember that.”

She had seen his lingering gazes, and the way he was responding to her presence had to have been so blatantly obvious. Did he see her purse her lips, as if preparing for a kiss? He had to have been imagining it. Truth was, he wasn’t sure if he saw it or not, and he would not take the risk unless he was certain.

“tell me about you, growing up, your parents, places you been in the world.”

He paused to look at her for a moment and gathered his thoughts. “Well let me see. I grew up on a farm actually. My dad drove cattle. I spent lots of years helping him with the farm until I was old enough to get my own job. I waited for my dad to get enough hands to help him around the place, then I got a job doing some Ranching and Logging. Logging took me out of Texas for a while. I made my way north and got as far as Minnesota. It felt so good to be away from Texas. This place has it’s charm, but for a young person it can seem like a prison at times.“

He paused and took a long drink of his wine, he drained the glass quickly. This was the first time in a long time he had talked about his life with anyone, let alone his parents. Apparently the wounds he was about to reveal next were still too fresh to speak of without shattering a small amount of his composure.

“I got a call one day. My aunt called and told me that mom and dad were in a bad car wreck. I tried to get on the first plane home, but the airport had grounded all flights. A bad snow storm had rolled in. I spent two days sleeping in the twin cities airport trying to get home. Dad didn’t make it for more than six hours after I got the call. Mom actually managed to wake up, but when the doctors told her about Dad something happened. She just stopped trying to get better. She went to sleep on the second evening and was gone in the morning. I missed her by about six hours.”

He paused and looked at Pearl for a long moment of silence. His blue eyes had darkened in shade, and his smile slipped. Then he drew a deep breath and reached out to gently pat her hand, as if to comfort her.

“Sorry about that Kitten. No one really knows the details outside of my remaining family. I really don’t talk about it. Dad left me the farm, but I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t pick up the fragments of what they left behind and continue as if they were still there. I did the only thing I could think of. I sold off bits and pieces of the farm. With the money I made doing that, I purchased a few rental properties. I fell back on my farm experience and worked as a hired hand for a year while I rented out places and plaid land lord. I lived in a small apartment by myself, I spent a good year or so trying to get my head on straight. I felt bitter at my parents for leaving me like that. It took some time to make peace with things. I mustered enough capital to start buying up more property. Eventually it got to the point where I had more places to look after than I could manage on my own. I started hiring people to look after the places. I still do own quite a bit of property, but I’ve started to do some investing in starter companies, places that want loans to start up a business, I undercut the banks rates because I have enough credit to get really low interest loans through them, then I funnel it through to the potential business owner. I’ve been just about everywhere in the united states. The only place I have not yet visited is Hawaii. My second wife and I were going to have a vacation there, but our marriage dissolved before that point.”

He paused and refilled his glass slowly, letting his eyes meet her own. Did she want more? He wasn’t the sort of person who went around sharing his life with other people, this wasn’t an easy task for him, but she had asked it of him, and so he would deliver. “My first wife was beautiful. Worse than that, she knew it. I was still young, and still raw from my parents death. I was making money at an alarming pace. I met her at a social event. She latched her claws into me like a vulture. She charmed the pants off of me, figuratively speaking. I was so stupid to let her in, but I was just very lonely, and she just had this way about her to leave my brain mush. In the end, she left me for another guy who had more money. He works for me now by the way.” He had to grin at that.

“My second wife, I was overly cautious with her. I picked a woman who was very sweet and gentle hearted. The problem was I was a young man and in my sexual prime, I needed more than just a woman for company. I needed a woman to see to my sexual needs. She for some reason I’ve yet to figure out couldn’t bring herself to do her duty as my wife, so I had no choice but to let her go. It was kind of a bizarre thing really. While I was married to her and not fulfilled every woman I saw looked like a goddess to me. I found myself wanting to go chase after every woman I saw. Yet after I broke it off with her, that feeling almost totally went away. I haven’t really found myself attracted to any woman since, well that’s not true entirely. There is one woman I have met since who has attracted my interest, but it’s a delicate situation. I dare not pursue it unless it’s very clear she would welcome it. She is far too precious to me, to do anything otherwise.”

At the tail end of his words he looked away from Pearl. He was staring into the candles flame and talking. He couldn’t look at her, for if he did, he knew she would see the truth in his eyes, that she was the woman he was talking about.

She listened to him, almost hanging on every word he said as he spoke first about his father and how he helped him drive cattle and then it went from there to ranching and logging and how that took him from the state where its told everything was bigger at or in. “Wow, cold up there lost of snow and cold weather must have been a big climate shock to your body.”

She didn’t leave it off as a question she just wanted to listen to him talk even more about himself. She understood about the Texas feeling like a prison, she was almost told those same words by Flip and his desire to leave this place behind, even if it was just the town it self and find a bigger area to grow in.

Pearl watched as he drank his glass of wine quickly as she took another sip of hers drinking it half way down. He began to speak of his parents as she took a few more bites letting him talk on and then she felt the sorrow in his words, she could hear his voice crack as he talked and the expressions in his face to sadness. She felt bad she asked him now, hoping that it wouldn’t ruin the mood of the evening.

Looking down she felt his hand upon hers giving it a soft pat as he stopped speaking and they sat in silence for a few moments in time. She turned her hand over and laced her fingers with his and gave them a gentle squeeze letting him know she was there regardless and understood how he felt for the most part when she lost her father yet unlike him pearl lost hers when she was quite young and had no real memories to go on but a small few. She often wondered if it was better to lose young or older, she couldn’t decide, as she often thought about things in life.

His hand remained in hers as he apologized. Pearl wanted to tell him it was okay but instead she smiled and squeezed his hand again letting hers relax within his while she ate with her right hand and sipped the wine listening on how he built up his empire through real estate and hard work, investing in the right places and just going from there. That she thought was why he remembered where he came from, he worked for basically everything he had and used his head and doing it the right way.

“I’ve been just about everywhere in the united states. The only place I have not yet visited is Hawaii. My second wife and I were going to have a vacation there, but our marriage dissolved before that point.” He said ending that statement as she reached for the bottle of wine and refilled his glass once again. .” She reached for her glass and took another drink finishing it, she placed her glass by his and smiled letting him refill it as well while he was doing his own.

“Funny you say that, when I was in the café that’s I was looking through travel magazines and I was reading about just the place. Hawaii looked beautiful; one day…it’s on my list a rather long list mind you of things to do and places to see.” Pearl went quiet again as she shifted in her chair, her body now turning more towards him allowing him to feel her now bare stocking clad foot against his outer calf as she lightly caressed it with her inner foot as her shoe was off under the table.

He spoke about his first wife and how she was basically with him for his money, though pearl laughed softly as he finished that part of his life up telling her how the man now worked for him. “I was always told what comes around goes around and I guess for her it must have. Though I know I could never marry for money. That is where my mother and I are completely different she had always said to find a rich man and marry him, needless to say she never did. My father like yours was a farmer, which was how he died in a farming accident.”

She took a sip of her wine and placed the glass back down, “aster that my mother changed, she went down hill in every way possible. She became wild, a drinker and the tables turned it was if I became the mother and she became the daughter. I was forced to grow up fast, I don’t hate her for it, I’m not mad at her or anything but I just disagree with the things she believes in. I want to work for everything I want in life. I’ve never minded working, I did odd jobs here and there but the reward was the payment and how good it made me feel inside to know I myself earned it.”

He went on to talk about his second wife as her fingers stayed locked within his as it just felt so right at the time, it was a closer connection to him. Pearl felt a slight bit uncomfortable when he spoke out about wife number two and the sexual part of the relationship, she had wondered how a woman could not but help to find him attractive or want to sleep with him and give into that part of their marriage but she knew there were two sides to everything and she left it go, not wanting for him to need to explain any more about it.

Finishing her meal she placed her fork down and then looked to her plate, it was still half filled but she never ate much. Majority of the time she just picked unless she was in a rut or a mood to really eat. “I haven’t really found myself attracted to any woman since, well that’s not true entirely. There is one woman I have met since who has attracted my interest, but it’s a delicate situation. I dare not pursue it unless it’s very clear she would welcome it. She is far too precious to me, to do anything otherwise.” She reached for her glass again and drank half of it as she heard him speak and watched as he turned his head from her after he had said it like he regretted saying anything at all.

Pearl nearly choked on the last swallow of the wine as she caught his hint, and cocked her head putting the glass down again and she covered her mouth and coughed twice as the wine went down the wrong pipe. Never leaving go of his hand she reached for the cloth napkin across her lap and dabbed her mouth and under her eyes as when she choked her eyes welled with tears in the corner and fell down along her cheeks.

Not sure what to say she didn’t want to assume it was her but from how he spoke and his body language she was sure it was. Pearl was never placed in a position like this before, she had no idea what to say or do but she took in a deep breath and as his face was still turned she asked with a soft whispery voice. “J-Jason, by any chance would you be speaking about me when you said that last part…if…if you didn’t mean me I feel like the biggest foolish fool ever in thinking you were.”

Her foot fit back into her heel as she released his hand from hers and reached up feeling his cheek against the inside of her palm as she turned his face towards hers and looked into his eyes seeing how the flames from the candles made the flecks of color dance within them. If there was ever a time she wanted a man to kiss her it was then and there.

The connection was made and the bond was formed, her walls were down and pearl had felt her self grow up again, but this time it was in a days time not over several weeks when her mother took a down hill slide into the dark hell of a bottle. Pearl was never abused physically or verbally but mentally making her have so much responsibility was a hardship in its own way, she never had that child hood that others had.
