Sub-Categories

Not sure if this has been dealt with completely or not before so I figure I'll throw this out there. I have seen a few times people commenting that they had a story that could have fit in multiple categories.

I wish we could have a sub category for a story. We'd have to limit it. You can't just have 20 sub categories. That would be ridiculous. But what if you were allowed 1 sub category. Imagine picking 2 categories. You have to pick which is the main one, and then pick a sub category. Your story is then listed in both.

I don't know what the publishing process is like on the site side of things. I assume someone there is reading the story to make sure it is appropriate. Which means that said person could also then determine if the subcategory was being abused (IE just being added to gain extra views/votes when the story doesn't really fit in there) and reject it for that.

Yes, I know you can use TAGs for things like that. But Tags will only get you so far.

Just a thought. Maybe it's just too much trouble to be worth it..but it's an idea..

The tagging could get us much further if they were featured at the top of a story's first page rather than at the end of the story's last page, and if they were navigable across all categories instead of only being accessible from within a category first.

(You can only use tags to find stories with that tag in a category. If you want to see what's tagged with the same tag in other categories, you have to go into each of the categories and find that tag.)

Tags are now at the top of the first page: top left, there's an icon.

You can also search on tags, which will pull up every story with that tag. You don't need to do it category by category.

Not sure what you mean when you say "now." I've never seen them there. Not seeing them there now.

Are you in the Beta screen view, rather than the Classic? The Beta display was released two or three years ago, with better functionality. I think you must still be on the old display.

Go to the bottom of this page, you should see a Style chooser. Click on it, and select Modern. All will be revealed.

Apparently I was opted in to the Beta view automatically when I joined.

The only option I see now is to click to opt out of it and get classic back.

I haven't even looked at classic.

I don't see a "style chooser" anywhere.

I hope you aren't referring to the "mobile friendly" literotica design, because I have checked that out and it simply lacks too much functionality. I won't even use it on mobile devices.

We're aware of the desire for some way to drill down inside of Categories. We've experimented with several options for Subcategories over the years, but none of them worked as well as we'd hoped. The best option for now is using the Tags Portal and filtering both Tags and Categories. We have several other experiments in the works, and we expect to eventually roll out a system that allows more filtering inside of the Category Hubs.
