Stupid questions...

Ok, I'm not a *total* newbie, but these are definitely stupid newbie questions.

First, I noticed that joining one of the writing challenges requires us to "PM" for instructions, and I've had a couple of folks from here mentioning that I may "PM" them as well. I'd love to! And I'm not anti-social, I just have no idea what a PM is, what it does, or how to use it! Or is that just messege board slang for eMail?

My second dumb-ass question: how do you get the emoticons in the body of your messages? If I click on one at the bottom of the "reply" screen, it just puts the smiley or whatever at the head of my post, so I'm stuck smiling at you'all like this :)

I also have no idea how to put links into a "sig line" (or where to find it), don't know how to edit the story that already posted to Lit and has a SERIOUS mistake in it, and have no idea how to respond to the Anonymous eMailer that came from Lit.

No, I don't mind being teased, so go ahead. Flashing is optional :)

Hey nyte. I'll probably be the third person to answer your questions.

A PM is a Private Message. You can see your inbox link in the topright of your screen. If you want to PM someone (it works as a verb too!), then click on their name and you should get the option.

Emoticons can be found to the right of the reply text box.

Signatures can be set through the control panel, which can be reached from the links at the top of the screen.

And welcome to the AH.

The Earl speaketh truth. :) I tell you what, I'll PM you...so you'll see what we mean! :D

Hey Nyte, Thanks for asking these questions. I had a lot of the similar questions, but had not gotten around to asking them yet. Seeing your question made me finally do some research myself.

In terms of the emoticons, I think the issue might be your settings in the options. I had the same problem. Today, I finally went in and changed my options and lo and behold, I can now put emoticons in my messages. :nana:

What you need to do is click on the "user cp" link at the top of the screen and then hit edit options. Scroll down until you come to micellaneous options section and the first one you will allow you to change the message editor interface. Change this from the basic editor to the standard editor.

After you make this change, you will see the emoticons to the right of the reply text box. I think that the ones at the bottom of the screen are just for the message title.

Hope this helps

May I also post a stupid newbie question?

I've seen lots of people talking about entering stories in a contest - specifically, the Halloween contest. It sounds like fun, but I don't see anywhere how one is supposed to go about submitting a story for the contest, or what the rules are for it. There's probably a very obvious link that I've missed - I tried clicking on "Story Contest" on the front page, but that didn't have the info. Any help would be most appreciated!

When the time comes for the contest, you submit the story like normal except that you must put "Name of Contest 2006" in the Notes section so Laurel and Manu will know that it's meant for the contest. This will ensure that the story gets posted in a matter of hours (instead of the usual waiting period of several days) so it'll be included in the story list for people to read and vote.

This was EXACTLY the problem!! I'd never explored the usercp settings until you said something, but but by default the message section was set to "Basic" (so it didn't show the emoticon menu on the right at all), and also the PM options weren't enabled, so I didn't have any inbox or anything relating to PMs showing up either. Thanx everyone, I feel better now :nana:

Now that I needed to know. I've been planning on entering the Halloween contest this year (if I ever finish the story I'm planning on using for it  ).
