Stupid question

I am so not into technology. If you look at the internet on a nook I pad etc. can you get a virus that ruins the machine like you can on a computer? Are you suppose to protect it somehow?

I am nothing if not honest. Just use my nook sometimes. Figured it could be a problem but don' t know if there is much out there to protect it.
