On this day in music history: February 25, 1963 - Chicago based label Vee Jay
Records releases “Please Please Me” by The Beatles in the US. Issued with the
catalog number VJ 498, it is their first American release. It is licensed to the label
after EMI owned Capitol Records refuses to release it, telling producer George
Martin and manager Brian Epstein that the band “won’t mean anything over here.”
The record fares no better on Vee Jay initially, which is such a low priority for
the label that the initial pressings of the 45 misspell their name as “The Beattles”.
The original release of the single sells just over 7,300 copies, mostly in the Chicago
area where it receives airplay on WLS. Today original first press US copies of
“Please Please Me” sell for over $3500 in near mint condition. The single is
reissued (with “From Me To You” as its B-side instead of “Ask Me Why”) in January
of 1964 with the new catalog number VJ 581, and in a picture sleeve. A small
number of the first 45 release with the VJ 498 catalog number are re-pressed with
the Vee Jay “brackets” logo variation and the correct spelling, in January of 1964
and are also very rare. This version (VJ 581) peaks at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100
on March 14, 1964, selling over a million copies in the US.
