So, what are some good tips on how to focus and concentrate on studying and getting homework done? Just figured this would be a good thing to ask as I have a midterm paper due next Tuesday.
all in all you just have to nut down and do it
it also depends on your learning style (ie what way you retain information best)
best way for focusing, is to make sure you have no interuptions, and for me it means making sure i have everything else done or at least under control (as in cleaning and house stuff)
but ultimately you just have to do it and you know it
so sit yourself down
and write
When I was in college I learned to study (I wished I had years earlier). First I found the library. Then, I slipped in library time during the *day* when I was already out and about going to class and using my brain. For me personally, once I got home from class I usually disengaged. By studying during the day my nights were free and I remembered much much more. Also I learn by doing, so unfortunatly this meant writing everything, over and over and over. For papers one word will solve your troubles: Outline. Once the outline is done your paper is 80% done as well. The better the outline, the better the paper and the less time you will spend writing it. Also adds cohesiveness. On sale now for the low low price of $9.99.

LOL
if your not using your computer for your assignment or work or study

its a huge distraction i know
but if youre not checking your email every 2 mins its going to get a lot more done
Go for a run or a brisk walk, come back and take a shower then knuckle down. It's been proved that physical exercise stimulates the centres in the brain which help with concentration.
I write everything down into questions and answers on little palm cards and have my partner take me through them over and over until I've memorised the answers. If it's really important and we dont have much time he'll spank me for every answer I get wrong. I might not sit comfortably in the exam, but I always know the answers! lol.
To help you study, type your notes. Read the textbooks and write up a synopsis of each section and make yourself a study guide. Now, study!
This advice won't help for the studying or the papers but it will most definitely help on the test, especially the essay portion. After you read the question thoroughly, take a minute or two to jot down in the margin everything you can remember about the subject. You don't need complete sentences, just a few words or phrases for each thought will do. Don't worry if the phrase isn't completely "on point" for the question. Just brainstorm. Now take a deep breath and continue on to the actual writing of the question. Even if you run out of time to totally finish the essay, the instructor will know that you do have a firm grasp of the subject.
I was able to acheive total points on an essay where I couldn't remember the name of the person I was supposed to be writing about for a graduate level course. My notes mentioned his works, honors, etc., even what part of the page in the text book his picture was on, but not the guy's name. The professor gave me full credit because it was obvious I had studied and knew what I was talking about.
