Study may help explain why men are more susceptible to COVID-19 than women

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, researchers and public health officials have been puzzled by a simple fact: Men appear to be more likely to catch COVID-19 than women, and when they do catch it, they are more likely to suffer severe complications.

According to a study released on Monday in the European Heart Journal, men have higher concentrations in their blood of a key enzyme, called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which is believed to play a key role in how COVID-19 attacks a patient's lungs.

Misandry.

Be interesting to see if there are further subsets of the population that produce more of it. Might help explain ethnic disparities. Or not.

The other possibility is that it is higher in some group of patients with lethal comorbidities like heart disease, diabetes or obesity.

Depending on what it does, maybe people who have these underlying conditions have more of that enzyme because that is the body trying to assist the low oxygen carrying capacity versus volume in an obese person, for example.

One of th e oddest things reported during hospitalizations is that these patients blood oxygen levels are dangerously low but they are basically pleasantly hypoxic. They are not suffering because of the low O2. Maybe the enzyme "helps" that happen and kills them.

There's going to be a lot of interesting insights into all respiratory diseases when this is all over.

It's already been investigated and it's genetic. Women always have a stronger immune system than men. It's to do with the fact that they carry two copies of the X chromosome whereas men only carry one. For a species to survive it doesn't need as many males as females so evolution has made women more able to resist infection.

It is more complicated than that.

Immune response is on the X chromosome. Women have two chances to be gifted with traits that help the immunological response.

There are two tasks that are important for defeating a pathogen. One is the ability to recognize an intruder and the other is the ability to neutralize it. Some people are good at one portion of that task or the other or both. Twice the X chromosomes doubles the odds you will be good at both.

I feel like, with clear data and sound theory available, i should post about how silly you men are, imaging everything is sexism, and it's probably because of periods.

For years upon years we've been wondering when this man-hater's period would end.

No end in sight. She cannot pick good men for shit,
so she thinks all men are shit.
