In a nutshell this is just another type of coercion and reluctance scenario where both participants in a pairing are (more or less willing) 'victims' of 'overwhelming force' be it group behaviour or person(s) of authority or even just circumstances.

In general, it goes something like this.

It is commonly known secret that Alice fawns over Brad. There is little doubt Brad likes Alice. Neither of them do anything about that however. One or both may be prohibitively shy, or there might be some real or perceived barriers for them to get together. One or both may even be in current relationships, typically perceived to be disfunctional and/or destined to fail sooner than later anyway by their friends or colleges involved (or even possibly family, although that drives in traditional arranged marriage territory what this is not).

The event can be driven by genuine will to 'help' unasked, there may be some vested interest, be it willing to destroy (or even strengthen) the current relationship of one of them or just general perception that current situation is somehow toxic for larger group dynamics one or both of them are part of, it may be just a prank and/or plain and simple excuse for a great party.

Whatever the motivation, a great party is being town up, Alice and Brad are invited and left with no excuse to not show up, and to their horror/excitement the party turns out to be a mock wedding between them, with or without their prior consent, but typically as a surprise on site.

Btw, according to hushed and not so hushed tales by my parents generation it appears to have been not so rare event in soviet Latvia during sixties-seventies of twenty century, so it is in a sense far less made up situation than it may appear to some.

Typically, the mock newlyweds are not expected to take it too seriously themselves, but they are expected to at least kiss publicly, and are more than likely trapped in the same bedroom for the following night.

It may have no lasting consequences, although it may be more than a hint and quite a push (and it is recorded to result in a real marriage afterwards at least once). The mock newlyweds may be expected to give appearances of a couple for a period afterwards, and/or at least given fair opportunity to be a couple, even if they are not in fact expected to stay exclusive by the perpetrators of the whole affair.

For example...

1. It is commonly known secret that Alice fawns over Brad. There is little doubt Brad likes Alice. Neither of them do anything about that however, despite ample opportunities and common interests. Alice is prohibitively shy, and comes from very rich but very conservative family, while Brad is a rather poor guy of mixed race. Brad is also still together with his high school sweetheart Cindy, but it is obviously not working in college, they have very little in common and are fighting constantly and often publicly. Cindy falsely accuse Brad in cheating while openly flirts with just about anyone herself.

Markuss has eye set on Cindy, and believe he haven't yet had more success just because she's keeping the toxic relationship with Brad up. He rants about the situation to his friends. Someone says, they have to get Brad cheating for real. But a whore won't suffice. Someone mention Alice. Not a chance. Someone mention mock wedding.

Karl, fraternity president always on lookout of an excuse for a great party, picks up the idea and runs with it. He doesn't care who gets married, he wants to organise great wedding, ASAP. He calls Karen, present of Alice's sorority, and convinces her that she likes the idea. Forces of tectonic magnitude are put in motion.

Alice's roommate Manndy feels tired to babysit her and maneuver around her with her own affairs. Lizzy, Alice's best friend, honestly believe it would be for good, so it's easy to bring them on board. They invite John, Alice's older childhood friend, whom she trust unconditionally without knowing what a pervert he had become since, to act as the priest. When Alice finally learn what is about to happen they together convince her it is going to be just a play. (A number of people organising the event may believe so as well.)

Brad is taken completely by surprise, but decide to go forth with it. Throughout the event it's quickly becoming very much serious both for him and Alice.

After the meal, John take them to sauna, spank with scented brooms and massage Alice to orgasm, then push Brad and Alice to have sex in more than semi-public setting, and the party descend into all-out orgy around them.

2. Group of old friends are very much bored. There haven't been a great party for a while, and somehow, they can't come up with a good excuse for one right now. Someone mention that weddings are much of fun. Too bad there none in foreseeable future. Idea that they could play a mock wedding surfaces. They go through possible candidates for couplings, but don't want it to possibly turn too serious, or have unwanted consequences. Finally they choice is Alison and Jennifer, two adorable MILFs and already best friends. Their respective husbands think it to be a great joke too. Sure, it doesn't go as smoothly, but the fallout is, they kickstart a swinger group that later play out all sorts of surprise combinations not only between the established members but also involving people new to the group.
