Re-watching HBO's "Rome" TV series, season 2, gave me a little bit of insight about what it may mean to be simultaneously a strong woman, yet a submissive one (whether to a man or woman).
*SPOILERS AHEAD* lol...
Octavian is furious at his sister's and mother's refusal to conform to the virtuous roles he expects them to play. He sits and speaks with Livia, and grips her hand so tightly that it hurts. He tells her that he will on occasion beat her, not for any transgression but because it sexually excites him to do so, so whenever he does it, she is not to get upset or think that she has necessarily displeased him.
I like Livia's entire behaviour throughout this scene. From the beginning to the end, she seems to me to be the prime example of a strong-willed submissive. She sits in silence without objection until spoken to; she addresses her husband-to-be (or husband at this point? not entirely sure...) with marked deference; she makes absolutely no move to pull her hand out of Octavian's soldierly grip; there is a clear moment when she hears of Octavian's violent kinks and her eyes tell clearly that she is ready to satisfy and fulfill his desires in any way she can; and the final resolute "Yes, Sir" she gives, and the small smile of understanding she gives, signals that she fully acknowledges and accepts the role she is to play in his life.
This is what a strong submissive is to me: "I respect strength, because I have it, and since I recognize greater strength in you, I will obey you and submit to you in all things. I am strong, so I place my strength unreservedly at your service. In so doing, I shall be a worthy slave."
Thoughts?
