I've been in BDSM chat rooms and while a lot of people are their to cyber, not everyone is. I generally put on my profile that I"m not gonna cyber, I'm just looking to make friends. Then I ignore any PM's I get. Well unless the PMer asks permission.

Well alice, they can be. Just as a group of friends sitting around a kitchen table can be role playing. Or talking about their latest grandkid. Or solving the worlds problems or praying for a sick friend... A chat room is nothing more, and nothing less, than a venue for people to gather and communicate.

Some chats are very on-topic, BDSM focused discussions. Some are very relaxed, free-form, what-ever-the-hell-we-come-up-with-tonight gab-fests. Some are focused on cyber-scenes or cybersex. Some are essentially free-form on-line role playing games for fantasy, horror or the SF genre.

And it's rather like the topic boards here on Lit... graci... uh.. someone, yeah! Someone is always hijacking a thread to get cookies! *grin*

What I was really wondering is if people are chatting as themselves (e.g., Mr. Geoff on this board), or if they go to pretend to be someone else (e.g., a six foot plus cop in exaggerated fetishwear).

If I understand your answers, it just depends on the person and/or the mood of the room. It sounds more than a bit confusing, to tell you the truth!

My personal opinion (and this is just a personal preference kinduva thing) is that it is much more interesting to get to know the actual person. But then again - I've never done the role playing thing, so I can't really say whether I'd enjoy it or not.

There was a time in my life where almost all of what I did online was roleplaying. And I came to understand that while the character was make believe, the feelings, the thoughts, the fantasies... were not. LordHamiltonZ was created to be my CyberDom persona. Protector of the innocent, kinky-freak, sadistic pervert. And ended up the only thing phony about him was the name.

I kept the screen name as my scene name when I transitioned from OL to real time BDSM because so many people had gotten to know the LHZ nickname. Until my youngest offspring turned 18. Once there, family court could kiss my behind about visitation and I started using Evil_Geoff and retired the LordHamiltonZ nick. Most places I tried just plain Geoff was already in use so I just tacked the Evil_ on theer to indicate I might not be quite so mainstream... *grin*

Anyway, Alice, just keep this in mind: When it comes to OL, you never, ever know if the person you are chatting up is who and what they say they are. OL you can be anyone, or anything. When the guy is stripping - and she's yelling, "Show me the moves!" - then he is subservient to her. He is in a very degrading position, and for some women who don't like their guys to be in degrading positions, this is actually a big turn-off.

Of course, if she's tied to a chair the dynamic changes a bit. Whether that would be enough to overcome the negative effect of the guy behaving like a stripper is hard to say.
