Recently a bunch of huge stretch marks appeared on my upper thigh. Huge, deep, ugly red lines. What can I do about them? My doctor said to use hydrocortisone, but so far they've only gotten much worse.

I'm not even sure how I got them. I've gained about five pounds over several months, but I'm still underweight. The weird thing is it's only on one leg. I hate them...

Outside of dermatological treatments or plastic surgery, there is not much you can do about stretch marks except wait for them to fade. There are many OTC creams that claim to get rid of them, but trust me when I say they don't work. :(

I'm not sure why hydrocortisone would work. Steroids thin the skin, which makes it more prone to stretch marks. And stretch marks aren't a function of inflammation, which is what steroids treat.

Instead of that, I'd suggest getting some cocoa butter. You can buy "Palmers" brand in a tub at just about any drugstore or Walmart-type place. Sometimes it's in the ethnic hair and skin care section, whereas others it's with the rest of the moisturizers/skin creams. It has some Vitamin E and other stuff in it too, which helps keep the skin moisturized and elastic to prevent and fade stretch marks.

That doesn't mean they'll go away, though. It may or may not help noticeably, and they may or may not fade quicker because of it. A lot of women use it during pregnancy and seem to think it helps minimize marks.

Beyond that or dermatological procedures like Bailadora said, you're pretty much stuck waiting until they fade. I used to really hate mine, but once they fade they're not a huge deal, and I've learned to see them as reminders of how my body's changed. In your case, I'd think that'd be an even more powerful concept; if you weren't making such a huge transformation, they probably wouldn't be there, and they're just another sign of how you're changing. :) Stretch marks are pretty womanly, too, when you think about it! :D

Bio Oil. i used it on some scars on my leg after i had a nasty accident and now you can barely see them. its supposed to be great for stretch marks too it will probably work REALLY well for you since the stretch marks are new, i think i got mine at wallgreens or rite aid, it's not even too expensive.

Stretch marks aren't always from being overweight or gaining weight too fast. My hubby has stretch marks from going to fast. He's very tall and hit a grownth spurt in high school that caused the stretch marks. He was very thin when this occurred.

You may be getting them because different parts of your body are growing quickly due to the hormones you are taking and the changes your body is going through. Like Erika said, you should see them as part of your transformation. Most of us have them and no one is perfect.... embrace your body both good and not so appealing traits.

Take Care :rose:

I would love to get rid of my stretch marks. It doesn't bother me that they're on my breasts, that's fairly normal--and it's honestly not any of my fault that they popped out from A to C in a couple months... that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the stretch marks on my arms. They make me embarrassed to go sleeveless. My upper arms are so ugly and I have no idea how I got stretch marks there.

I mean, I'm overweight, I'll live with the two on my stomach. They make it look like I've been pregnant--and I wasn't... but I'll live with them, no one sees my stomach anyway. But I'd love to wear sleeveless shirts without little lines running around my upper arms. I mean, I know they're all just from growing too fast. My arms lengthened so I got stretch marks. But no one else I know has arm stretch marks. Boob-stretch marks, sure, and stomach... I got over those, even if at times I hate my stomach for those two marks... it looks like I was pregnant... I just hate my blotchy, stretched upper arms.

I don't know, maybe some weight training will help, but I've had marks and blots that look kind of like really small acne since I was 13. This would be no problem if I was a guy. Almost all the guys I know have these marks. But I'm a woman and occasionally I'm expected to look like one. ><

Oh well.

I'll get over it, though it'd be great if there was something I could use to fade the marks a bit. Acne scar marks... I would LOVE to fade those... not like I'll stop picking them if I can't...

Might check out this 'bio oil' or cocoa butter.

when I was pregnant I used vit e oil religiously and despite having two whoppers got very few stretchmarks on my belly. You need to do it early though and that includes before growth spurts. Once there, nothing shifts them but you can disguise them with fake tan or avoid the sun altogether, because they lack melanin to tan. The ones on my arse and thighs are silver now and I actually kinda like them. It is tough when they are still red though.

Bio-Oil is really good. I combined this with Trilogy Rosehip Oil too. Works wonders and Rosehip is really good for the recent scarring too. Hope that helps and Good Luck.

i used bio oil as well on my pregnancy stretchmarks

it works wonders , i didnt believe it would work either tried so many other creams and potions before but it does work

Retin-A or any other retinoid cream will help diminish new stretch marks. I've used Retin-A for years for acne and fortunately had some on hand when I noticed new marks, but you'll have to get a prescription for it.

I got a bottle of bio-oil. The cashier said it's very popular, and she highly recommends it. I also started taking fish oil pills for omega-3 fatty acids, and drinking more fluids to keep my skin healthy. Hopefully it will prevent the stretch marks about to appear on my other thigh if not heal the existing ones.

I know I shouldn't think too much of the marks, but they really bother me. I was looking forward to pristine skin. Fortunately I found an excellent cure for acne. I didn't have much to begin with, but it completely disappeared once I started my hormones. Too bad the treatment's not for everyone.

Thanks everyone.
