Strauss-Howe and the Fourth Turning

While some think that if Biden / Harris end up taking office there will "unity" and "return to normal." While I won't get into the specific political reasons this is highly unlikely, according to Strauss-Howe Theory the period of crisis is likely to continue through at least 2025 and has not peaked yet.

Say what you want, but the Theory seems to be much more than some vague Notradamus like predictions. It seems to born out time and again in real world patterns.

While I have long subscribed to the Theory as it relates to generational change patterns, as of last year I was arguing that we may see an end of saeculum without a redefining crisis this time. Amazingly we have had Corona virus and the subsequent responses, the ethnic uprising and civil violence, the controversial and divisive election, and now a new wave of health related restrictions.

I had been considering what a transition to a new saeculum would be like without a major crisis period. Yet it turned out that was premature.

well, it seems like your answer all along to solving the crisis would be "Just install Trump in office and let him do whatever he wants."

While you might think this would effectively "End the crisis" it would also result in an overthrow of American democracy, a disenfranchment of a wide swath of our citizens, a further breakdown of civil society which would lead to further class warfare and ethnic tension, along with a host of other problems that would arise as a result of his misguided policies. Now, maybe Biden and Harris are not the answer either and I'm not implying they are.

What I see are three basic problems. Those being 1) one of the major parties has been very successful in convincing people that abolishing any corporate regulations, as well as the concept of "The Greater Public Good" will lead to greater prosperity and freedom, and in fact that anything done for "the greater public good" would inevitably lead to soviet-style marxism.

While 2) controlling and undermining trust in the public media while making abundant falsehoods and easily debunked "Facts" substitute for real news among the public, leading them to make unwise choices based on biased and incorrect information.

And 3) the OTHER major party has not invested itself enough in the interests of farmers and other rural areas, leading those parts of the country feeling dis-enfranchised and subject to manipulation from a power hungry autocrat. In much the same way that Kim Il Sung, the Nazis, Lenin, Castro, and many other dictators first gained traction in their respective countries.

Exactly who believes that? I think most of us who voted Dem are perfectly aware of how intensely the right hates us, and that there will be no unity anytime soon

Why is it YD, that y'all look into the mirror,
and all you see is the face of Republicanism?

I think you hit the nail on the head. I also believe that hate flows both ways.

As long as both sides are this antagonistic, will anything worthwhile be accomplished?

In reality, Donald Trump, his Republican Party and their allies are playing a different game.

One entirely outside of "normal politics" and the "folk theories of democracy"
that the Fourth Estate and many other political elites worship like a religion.

Donald Trump and his movement's real goal is to make invalid any future election
where Republicans do not win.

The attacks on the 2020 election are also part of a strategy which has shown itself
to be successful in the extreme. Republican voters are being conditioned to view
the Biden administration as having no legal authority because Trump was "betrayed."

The truth of what Trump and his neofascist movement have revealed about America's failures
and vulnerabilities must be confronted if that civic disease is to be purged from the country's
body politic. The reckoning must also include an assessment of the character and behavior
of the tens of millions of Americans who voted for Trump and continue to support him.

Ultimately, American neofascism as mainstreamed by Donald Trump and his followers
is a slow-acting poison. Trump's coup attempt is one more sign that it is working.
