This doesn't quite answer your question, but perhaps you could try anal in another position? I've found that in a spooning position my hubby and I can do DP with his cock and a dildo (I control the dildo's penetration) and it's not awkward at all.

It sounds like the position that you do anal in works well for both of you, though, so I could understand why you'd be reluctant to change that.
