stranger things

really want to like this show,
but do not love it
i do get the... 'homage heaped on homage' thing,
but...

the gimmickieness of it, i think,
gets in the way of....

of?

what? i am not quite sure?

a mash up of every and every type of 80's born film/show
(of its ilk)
and their story lines/attending memes?

one (professional) reviewer liked the show
'despite its many faults'

i suppose i am on the cusp of that as well

i powered through,
despite stopping several times in eps
to just... go..."ughhhhhh"

the show feels heavy, well intentioned but...
not one iota, of itself, original...

except in how derivative it actually is;
storyline for storyline,
look for look,
character for character,
scene for scene,
line for line...

and perhaps that is the point...

although the (implied) footnotes and references get in the way
of what ultimately isn't there.

I'm perfectly OK with it just being this:
a mash up of every and every type of 80's born film/show

and their story lines/attending memes?

Can't it just be that?

I just need to find the right couch (or bed) and some time to binge watch this.

yes. of course it can...

i just want it to be more substantial;
for the look
and the acting are very interesting.

it is a compelling program,
but almost equally frustrating...

at some point,
it will have to become something about something
of its own...

honestly,
this feels like a film/tv show
that aliens - out there someplace -
made as a friendly postcard back to earth
after watching popular media of that genre
streaming out to their fleck of the cosmos

interesting? yes...
compelling... yes.

I like this version :)

Someone posted it in the blurt thread not too long ago. The fella and I really dug it.

I think it was pretty cool. It was like Stand By Me meets suspens /horror.

Agreed. Other peeps like it, too.

‘Stranger Things’ now Netflix’s most popular show

The nostalgic aura of science-fiction/thriller summer binge-watch Stranger Things managed to propel the new mini-series to new heights of popularity and its young actors into the A-list orbit. Stranger Things managed to beat its own most popular record which was previously held by Making a Murderer and Daredevil.

Stranger Things tells a story about a missing boy, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) whose mysterious disappearance in a small town in 1983 evokes the curiosity of those close to him and reveals a secret government project. The series reintroduced Winona Ryder whose rise to fame came appropriately in the eighties, and several newcomers such as Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown and Gaten Matarazzo.

I'm trying to like it. I've watched the first three episodes, and it's interesting, but I'm not as excited about it or as hooked as many are. I think my expectations were too high. Add that to watching late at night while tired, and I keep falling asleep.

That's a shame, but ya know it's all good, different strokes for different folks.

Some people think Rambo First Blood is the greatest 80's Military action film, when clearly Top Gun is the winner.
