So I just watched the Netflix series Stranger Things, and I want to do an RP based on it, but set in modern times. If you're unfamiliar with the show, it basically involves a group of nerds discovering a dark mirror universe where a faceless monster roams. An escaped telekinetic girl, government secret lab, major references to pop culture of the 1980s (the show takes place in 1983), and deep and lovable characters.

The overall story would start similar to the show -- psychic child used by United States government to spy on foreign enemies, accidentally opens a rift allowing monsters out of their shadow plane, child also escapes through rift, hides out with a group of nerds, massive search campaign commenced by government.

The difference would be that our characters, of course, would be adults. And they don't all necessarily have to be nerds. However, unlike the show, our characters would also develop some kind of power. At first we'd be normal people. But then after we meet the escaped experiment, a monster drags us to the Vale of Shadows, the demonic mirror realm. The escaped experiment saves us, but not before we are all stung by a swarm of demon wasps. We all fall deathly ill, but our friend is able to use their powers to prevent us from dying. However, the venom does alter our DNA, giving each of us superpowers.

The first major arc would center around us learning to live with our powers and combating this rogue government agency as well as a few monsters. From there we could delve into other rifts opening up, and a new agency being built on the ashes of the old. This new organization could be similar to Stargate Command, with us visiting a variety of alternate worlds and realms once we discover the secrets of opening rifts.

I'm open to ideas :D.

I might be down! I like the idea and the premise! If we can find some people I would love to join!

So you would want to start with us finding out our powers correct? And coming back from the alternate universe?

Well it would start when everything is normal, before our first trip into the rift.

Okay os it would start before we get powers would we play it all out then get to the rift then get our powers? Or did you want to start where there just about to go into the rift?

The story would start just before the first rift opens. Our characters are hanging out together in my guy's basement, gaming or playing something. I'm thinking we start it on a cold and windy night in February, and our characters are in their senior year of high school. Before this night, their biggest struggle was trying to decide what college to go to. But now that all changes. We are all previously friends, and are just hanging out in my basement, when suddenly we hear what sounds like rapid claps of thunder in the woods beyond my backyard. We then see a rift open up, the experiment comes crashing through, and the rift closes.

We end up spending some time talking with the experiment after we're done freaking the fuck out, and then the rift opens again and a giant tentacle monster grabs us all and drags us to the Vale. The experiment then comes to our rescue and we go from there with the venom and the powers.

Okay! Im down with that! So if were doing character sheet should we include what powers were going to be having?

Yeah, think of them kind of like Mutants/Inhumans from Marvel as far as how their powers work. Some of them might have a very hard time learning to control their abilities.

Yeah, that's also part of Eleven's power set in the Stranger Things tv show :D. I'm going to play the experiment as a boy who has the power to project his thoughts into a sort of psychic doppelganger that exists in the Vale of Shadows. Through the Vale, he can spy on events happening in the Material World, and when he accidentally alters one such event, it pierces a hole between the two planes.

For my main character -- the one who lives in the house where they are hanging out -- his powers will probably be something similar to Gambit, where he can charge the atoms inside of objects and cause them to explode. Prior to the wasp sting, he had epilepsy, which made his bioelectric field overactive compared to a normal person. The venom gives him the ability to consciously control this field, boosting the electronic signals traveling along his nerves. Thought processes, reaction times, reflexes, etc. are all enhanced to superhuman levels. He can also divert power to his senses for a short boost in sight or hearing or smell, and even speed up healing. He also learns to "charge" or disrupt the electromagnetic fields around atoms in close proximity to his body, setting the time of the charge by how much he disrupts it. If he wants it to take several minutes to explode, he'll just make a tiny distortion that will take time to destabilize the object. But for something more immediate, he will place his hand against a wall and cause a huge chunk of it to detonate within a few seconds.

If we can get at least two females, we'll at least have equal pairings and can roll with it.
