Strange as it may seem I find myself agreeing with Governor Jebbie. This bill did go too far. In one of the sound bites I heard today he commented that it would allow the arresting of shoplifters as looters many months after a storm, and in an area not affected by the storms.

While I agree with the idea behind the bill it needs to be limited to when and where the law takes effect. What conditions must be met to distinguish looting from your "normal everyday" crime.
Looting law defeated

That sort of law just piles it on. There are a great many of them. Single, one-dimensional sins, like taking valuable objects without compensation but without any threat to the owners, can simultaneously be charged as several different crimes at once. Burglary in the Nighttime is somehow worse, and B&E is always involved, plus either grand or petty theft, and now looting, too. All for one simple uncomplicated action.

"Driving to Endanger" is used as a total pile-it-on law in my state. You're charged with passing on a hill, passing on a curve, weaving in and out of traffic, and driving to endanger, all for one disastrous attempt to pass when no one would open up the lane to let you back in. They love to pile on an extra charge. Good for clear heads.

Has anyone spend time in court.

As part of Driver Education, somebody thought it would be a good lesson if we had to spend an afternoon observing our traffic court system in action.

Mostly cut and dried affairs, except for one, which I will never forget.

The driver got into the box and admitted that he had failed to stop at an intersection, before turning the corner and hitting a parked car.

The judge's decision was that his ticket had to be thrown out of court.

The cop had charged him with following too close.

We learned that afternoon, but I don't think it was the intended lesson.

You and I, darling Burley, have got to let go of this snide attitude about the defenders and upholders, serving and protecting like a bastid as they do. A lifetime of observation is just a prejudice, after all, isn't it?

Each cop is a new beginning, like a wet puppy or something. We should approach it as thought it meant us no evil. Love and the brotherhood of mankind! Trust in benevolent authority!

Or, maybe not. Fuck it.
