I recently wrote an erotic story for my girlfriend. She read it and loved it. Probably because it was a thinly veiled experience that we shared togeather last summer. She urged me to submit the story to a well known magazine and I did. I haven't heard a thing back from them so my question is: Does the submission of my story give them the "rights" to ownership? Or could I still submit the story to literotica? I just want to share the experience with the readers.

You need this:

http://www.loc.gov/copyright/circs/circ1.html

The law states that you own the work. It's copyrighted the moment you create it. You own that copyright until you sell it and a contract outlining the sale will be offered. You can do whatever you want with it.

If you did not send a self-addressed stamped envelope with your submission, you will never hear back. If it's been less than six months, then keep waiting. Generally.

Here's some things to be aware of.

If you post it here, then your work has become less valuable since it's not a first print.

If you post it here and have already offered first time rights to another place and they take it, then you run the risk of being blackballed as an author. Simultaneous submissions does not mean that you submit to the same story to different places, it means you can submit different stories to the same place.

Chances are they didn't accept it. Next time your down at the library pick up a Writer's Market (generally in the 001-100 area) and get some information on submission ceremonies.

thanks...

Thank you for answering in such detail. That cleared it up for me completely.

Another Question?

How long does it take for a submission to be approved? How many story's are submitted in a single week? O.K that was two questions. Thanks.

It can take up to 72 hours. It seems to be running that amount of time these days.

There is one editor, that is person who approves submissions. She reads anywhere from 70 to 100 stories a night.

Since you didn't ask, the site is updated and new stories posted every night at midnight, pacific standard time.
