This might be off-topic since it is about how to approach defining story ideas and is not an actual idea. If it is, I'm sure someone will let me know.
What is the preferred way of outlining stories out there? I use about three different methods, but my favourite is pseudo-screenplay. In it I set the general scene and minimal stage direction. Then I outline the dialogue in its entirety. I seek to make the spoken word carry all of the weight of the story. As I see characterization as being the key to great fiction, this technique is the best one (sor far!) for me. Of course when the story I am working on concentrates on Plot or Milieu and not Character, this technique fails miserably. It also results in a lot of useless dialogue that I end up converting to narrative or description. Still, I can jet out a fierce amount of text in a short time employing this technique.
Assuming that you use outlines when you write, how do you structure them?
