Since coming Lit in early December I announced here that I would be starting my first attempt at writing erotica. Thanks to everyone for their encouraging words. Hopefully my efforts will meet your approval. As a former newpaper photojournalist familiar with the inverted pyramid style of writing, the short story style is new to me. That and it is difficult to put into words the such emotionally charged events of one's life.

I have several stories to write and have roughed in few outlines that are waiting to be fleshed out. The first story however is half-way now and should end with approximately 1600 words. For now, there are 8600+ words and I am at a transition point where I could break the story into two parts.

Most of the stories I have outlined to date are based on real life experiences and could be written as an ongoing series with each episode about the same length. (not ongoing but more like flashback story telling)

My questions for everyone's consideration:

*stories are written at a jr. high/high school reading level*

1) Do you think this is a media that would support a continuing series?

2) Is a story length of 1500-2000 words too lengthy for high readership?

3) If I decide to seperate a story into two or parts should all parts be completed and posted in the same day?

4) How quickly should erotic or sexual situations be introduced to maintain reader interest?

Thanks for your input;

Yes, I'm on ch. 15 of a series I've been posting. No complaints yet.

Not at all.

3) If I decide to seperate a story into two or parts should all parts be completed and posted in the same day?

No, you can post them later. I usually shoot for a chapter a week, but life gets in the way sometimes.

4) How quickly should erotic or sexual situations be introduced to maintain reader interest?

There is really no right or wrong answer here. Some people go right into the sex and that is pretty popular here. Especially for those who want a quick stroke. However, if you are posting a long series it is not advantageous to the story to do this in most cases. As a result, the series that I have posted here, get a cool reception that begins to warm up by the second chapter.

The scripts that format the stories her at Lit split them at somewhere around 3500 words. (Stories longer than that are posted in multiple pages.)

Since there is no way to count the words online and two or three page stories seem to do well in the ratings, I'd have to say that 1500-2000 words is actually on the short side for stories here. In fact, I personally hate multi-part stories that are broken into chapters that short. My target length for stories to post here is about 3000-4000 words -- although I don't restrict my stories to any specific length.

High readership seems to be more a function of the story catching the readers' interest quickly than it does of how long the story is. If you catch their interest they'll read it to the end no matter how long it is.
