At an uneducated guess I'd have to agree that it's four pints for a pint or whatever. Blood is routinely centrifuged later for the cells alone and the seratonin(?) as a byproduct.

Also guessing but if they're replacing the volume then the donor is less likely to suffer any dizziness or such.

The procedure is called centrisus I think (centreesus) and typically takes longer but the restriction for doing it is longer (two months as opposed to one month for giving blood if my memory is correct.
