The clock on the center display read 5:26 as Brandon Phelps pulled into his parents' driveway, just a few minutes before the time he agreed to pick his mother up for their 6:00 dinner reservation at Stonehouse Grille, one of the nicer restaurants in the area and a frequent dining spot for his parents when they went on their date nights.
Being Valentine's Day, this was the biggest date night of the year, but Brandon's father wasn't home, having been called out to his company's headquarters to help handle some pressing issues at work. Even in this new telecommuting era, there were still some things that needed to be hashed out in person, much to Brandon's parents' chagrin.
Brandon got out of his car and stepped out into the cool early evening air. He was dressed neatly in a sharp black suit with a white open-collar button-down shirt underneath. After shutting his door, he walked to the front door, his nice black dress shoes clacking along the concrete driveway and walkway. As he reached the front door, he tried to open it to let himself in.
The door was locked.
"Shit," he muttered. He rang the doorbell and took a step back, waiting for his mother to greet him at the door.
