How many editors attempt to drive towards story continuity, and how to your keep track and enforce it?

Part of me likes having some loose control over a sub-set of characters, or make a newly developed character in one thread known and available on other parallel threads.

I've seen some of this coordination occur in this forum (i.e. wives for Gondor). But was interested in other hints/tips/feedback.

I had this very idea of continuity in mind when I started my Chyoo. When it got pretty large, I created an index that could be referred to, which lists important people and things in the story. I only write information that has already been established; for example, if some character is missing an eye, I don't provide an explanation as to why until that explanation is created somewhere in the chyoo.

I placed my index at the beginning, as a thread choice, with a SPOILER warning for those not planning to add.

Minimalist Approach

The bigger the story gets the harder it is to control it. I just try to keep each thread line consistent so we don't change hair color, or bodies from thread 2 to thread 4 along a certain line.

Woah! Quite the character list, Maester. Definitely helps to follow when you know a bit about the characters involved. I try to keep the characters consistent as well, but I don't go to that extent.

Yes, the character list has helped me write my thread for Geeks, pulling interesting info for the characters.

dont mind being out of continuty

But I have been keeping the continuty in Gordor stories pretty tight.

What a tour de force of a character background thread!

Makes me jealous... I've done a character list for When The Cat's Away, but it hardly compares: http://www.chyoo.com:81/index.php/main.story.page/22819/

Well you guys can thank J R R Tolkien. I learned from him all about having the world built before seeing where it goes. Actually just about everything I know about writing I learned from him and C S Lewis. Man, that somehow seems sacrilegious, oh well :p

I can say as a newcomer that I appreciate that character list spoiler... when I contribute I would like it to conform to the general thrust of the story. Certain characters shouldn't change shape or even personality depending on the thread that I take. I want to contribute, and that is a great way to help.
