One of the things I find myself doing is obsessively checking the last story I published for votes and ratings.

Sad? Yes. Pathetic? Also yes.

But how cool would it be if we had an analytics dashboard showing how your stories were consumed and rated over time? I look at some of the aggregated stats (rating, number of ratings, view count etc.) and wonder "why?"

Even if you could just get an anonymised CSV download and then just geek out over it with a glass of wine.

Just imagine slipping that hot little bitch into some lines of Python...

And some of us have no interest in that, but do greatly like the glass of wine part of it. *sips*

All right, and the Python part of it.

It's about 30 minutes work to reverse engineer Lit's ui and API and work out how to log in with a script.

As Em pointed out, the snapshots are available. For trends, you need to be capturing snapshots regularly.

Honestly, it's not all that revealing.

I've considered just writing a script to capture snapshots, and that would probably do the trick, but I've got enough automation to worry about at work. I can't be arsed with that on my leisure time. Also, Cheers *sips*.

I'm selfishly happy Lit doesn't have that kind of data, because I would obsess over it every day, and it would ruin my productivity.

Now, if you offer a cheese board with the wine - Comté, Brie, Roquefort, maybe some Manchego or Taleggio even - and call it a "Cheese and Sheets" night (sorry, the name is non-negotiable), that could sway me over to the stat obsession camp. As long as the wine is good, of course.

Current cheeses: Brillat-Savarin, Gruyere, Chaource, ooh, no, checks fridge, some bastard seems to have eaten all the Chaource. I know what I need to get at the supermarket tomorrow. Possibly more shiraz also.

Oh, this was about . . . er . . . computer stuff. Yes, grown-up stuff, you write a script to analyse your comments and perhaps do sensible things like count words to see how often you say 'humane'.

I have a system that monitors the results, stashes them in a database, and can present several different aspects of the data. I'm not the only one.

I do that for the fun of it, and because I can be very nervous if I don't know what's happening.

Probably most people who build similar systems hope it will tell them not just what happens, but why things happen the way they do. Unfortunately, the path to "why" hasn't been cleared yet. It's still a jungle out there.

I like seeing what % of my stories are still above 4.5. I’m getting 1* bombed all the time. Lots in the 4.49-4.47 range. Only happens to my LW stories.

Doesn’t bother me. I’ve got enough followers to keep me writing. But it’s an interesting #.
