"Stories" VS "Vignettes"

Nope. I'm with EB on this. The readers are all over the map in terms of what they want. A good proportion of them want the story, and they'll comment and down-vote little sex-only vignettes.

There are also readers who'll just roll their eyes and move on when they see a story much over a Lit page, Pick your audience.
Aye. Very true. Myself I want character development and erotic build-up as both a reader and a writer. I’ve mentioned this earlier or elsewhere but when I see 1.1k words starting with “I looked down and my cock was in her mouth” then I’m out. I know I’m gonna get a “skanky unicorns” kink without any kind of narrative structure.

I think it says something about us as individuals, some like lots of intellectual foreplay, some just want a quickie. For myself I am always reminded of the words of George Hamilton as Count Dracula in LOVE AT FIRST BITE.

Never…a quickie, always…a longy.

...it's silly to assume all readers are the same.

This.

And also, the same reader might want different things at different times. I know I do. Usually I like a slow burn, but there are times when a vignette will float my boat. Spice of life, and all that.

Making generalized statements about "what readers want" is a pretty sure way to get me to disregard the rest of a post, lol.

"Pretty sure" is not the same as "sure."

Regardless, that's not the substance of my post. Care to address it?

Well did you or didn't you? Obviously you did but just can't admit it. There's no substance in sitting on the fence, nor in trying to wash out your own statements.

Clearly I did. Relax.

There are at least three or four other posters here who have joined me in remarking on how ridiculous your premise is. Again, care to address that? Or are you just interested in semantics today?

ETA: Nope. Five other posters. Feel free to respond.

Then your original comment holds no water. But whatever, let's move on.

I've talked to many readers. I've heard what they say. They want smut. Countless guys have told me, really hot except for that ending "boner killer". I tell them, yea that was the plot. They say, "that part sucked." Or they say "wow that was super hot" and then I ask about the other part and they say "wut?" They scroll over.

Of course, some care. Absolutely they do, and I've already admitted that (ignoring that is on you) but they are the tiny minority. Some of you say that you have tons of comments and feedback to the contrary. I'm sure you all do. You have 10k hits and 100 comments. For argument's sake we'll just assume that all 100 of your comments are vividly complimentary of your plot (heck even Margaret Atwood chimed in and hailed you as the next Henry Miller or Salman Rushdie). What about the other 9,900? They scrolled down to the fapping part, skipped all the rest, maybe left you a 5, maybe not. Does it mean that your story is amaze balls? No. Does it mean that your story sucks wood? Hell no. It means nothing. But the vast majority want smut and nothing in the way of that.

I've made the same assertions in other threads and most agreed with me. I don't care. Whatever mood you're in whatever side of an argument you feel like taking on to feel smart I guess.

I'm simply not at all sure what makes your assertion any more or less accurate than the assertions of those who disagree with you, is all.

Your "evidence" is precisely as accurate as, say, mine.

Precisely.

Data is evidence, anecdotal evidence of someone saying something on its own is not evidence, in fact this is how mistakes and inaccurate or just plain wrong ideas spread, because people hear something and presume it’s true.

Judging by the point that “people just want smut” then short stories of one or two pages would get hundreds and thousands of views whereas long stories no-one would bother with…nobody. But we know that’s not true also as longer stories also get hundreds and thousands of views.

Your readers who like your style saying something may not be indicative of a wider audience without actual data to back it up.

People like different things, that’s as much as can be proven.
