Now that Ivan has passed I'll relate what has happened if anyone is interested.
On the night of the storm the patient I was with sat up in her bed after a loud crack and explosion. It seemed a tree had landed next to the house and taken out a power transformer. At that time, I pulled the patient and aide into the closet. We lost power and was low on fuel for the generator. Ever tried to siphon gas from your car in storm force winds?
The next day, it was announced on the radio that a paraplegic child would die within hours if he didn't have a generator to keep his ventilator going. Lowes hardware delivered one with plenty of fuel to keep him going. Grande Lagoon was hit hard. There was a hurricane party there. 30 people signed waivers to be excluded from the evacuation. They've found about 12 so far. In the same community a mother and her daughter were rescued from the attic of their home after the storm surge by the Coast Guard.
The mayor of a small city west of Mobile begged two days after for water and ice for his residents. FEMA finally showed up a day late and delivered the goods. The town is Atmore. They were hit direct by the eye of Ivan.
My former apartments in Pensacola are destroyed. I am unable to get in contact still with friends who live there.
The stories continue to mount. Those of families who spent 7 hours in a bathtub while their house collapsed around them. Elderly who were not located for days afterwards. Condominiums with alarms still ringing but no structure to support them.
If you work for the Coast Guard, FEMA, Salvation Army, Red Cross or any emergency agency then I would like to personally thank you. What you have done to help is amazing. You've honestly saved lives. To those that are corporate such as Lowes, you've got my support and business. You went the extra step to help and save someone. For a change it was not about money. You showed community support and responsibility.
I want to thank everyone who is helping and continuing to help. Communities have been destroyed. There are still hundreds of thousands without power but we're getting there.
If anyone cares to donate to the relief please contact the Red Cross or Salvation Army.
It will help all victims of all hurricanes this year. Not just those of Ivan.
