Stories are supposed to be original, I know...

Here's my question...

Years ago, I had an idea for a story. Instead of writing the story, I used the idea in a role play thread with 3 other writers, one with whom I'd written before.

Let's just say that thread did not turn the way I'd have written the story.

Can I write the story now? Is the concept still originally mine, or has it "been done?"

(I sent an email to Laurel several days ago on the story side asking this question...haven't heard back from her.)

Emails never get through. You have to PM through her profile here on the forum.

But, I don't think there's any real need. The original concept is yours, and since the contributions of the others didn't turn out the way you wanted anyway, your final story isn't going to be the same.

If you do end up using anything the other contributers created, the right thing to do would be to ask them for permission, and acknowledge them if they wish.

As far as posting the story when it's been done as an RP thread before, there's no prohibition against that at all. Few people actually come to the forum, and even fewer to the RP forum. It's going to be new to the majority of people, and that's more than good enough.

Concepts can rarely be "owned. (they can't be copyrighted; they can only be trademarked, and then only as part of some sort of marketing scheme). So, just go for it.

I agree with everyone else, just go ahead and post it. The role play thread was put up for free as this will be, you're not making money off of someone else work and you were part of it anyway.

My "Anniversary to Remember" began as a roleplay, but the other half lost interest early on and I decided "what the hell" and did it as a story, I had no issues.
