I think imgur have found it too difficult to remove pics that have been uploaded, so they have tweaked the coding for publishing links to give the 404 error or just a blank box if embedded.

I think imgur, like tumblr before them are intent on breaking their own business model. The algorithm they are using will eliminate 90% of beach holiday snaps.
