I was looking at my yahoo homepage and noticed that the word of the day is...

Stigma
DEFINITION:
a mark of shame or discredit
EXAMPLE: In "The Scarlet Letter" Hester Prynne was required to wear the letter 'A' on her clothes as a public stigma for her adultery.

My daughter mentioned to me the other day that I am now a 'single parent' which I thought was fairly astute coming from an 8-year-old. Mind you...if she has stigmatized me...who else has...and what with? <insert paranoid emoticon>

Do you ever feel as tho you have a stigma attached to you? That you wear a scarlet letter proclaiming you to be anything from a single parent to a newbie?

I'm pretty sure I'm stigma free. Oh wait I wear glasses, does that make me a 4 eyes? *lol*

no i don't

i think people can be prejudiced against me ... but thats there's not mine

to say you have a stigma is to admit there is something wrong with you ... if people have problems about you being a single parent let it be there problem mia

I've got these nasty wounds on my palms that keep bleeding every time I martyr myself.....oh right, those are stigmata.

Never mind!

No, and it's also not a sign of being a sheep who follows the instinct of the herd.

Yo. In prison, I was very stigmatized. People thought it was downright nasty when I bled from my hands and my feet. Some of that license plate equiptment can be dangerous.

Well could be that I'm a Black Woman, or a "bourgie" Black girl, or the fact that I look about 14.

these could be reasons some people don't take me seriously.

Are you old enough to be here?:D J/K

That isn't a stigma anymore, even though there are times when I feel it is.

Being a single parent isn't a mark of shame or discredit. Many times it is something to be valued about a person who really commits to doing the job well.

There was a time though.....

I can't think of any stigma I have. I do believe that anything I might be stigmatized for isn't something that I easily share or show. Now, here, there may be a stigma attached due to my BDSM involvement, but the stigma is only there because I am open about it and it can be seen! I do not however feel it is a sign of shame or discredit in this environment.

I would not however, where a cut off t shirt to the local grocery store that says, "I like spankings!" :D

:D

Sheeeet, spinaroo! I was just coming back here to say that.
Great minds . . .

Cept I think it is stigmatism.
