Given the preponderance of venereal diseases in the 'good old days', I wonder if giving those wooden wonders a bath in disinfectant would decrease their value?

Beautiful! Thanks... ;)

Don't you love the special box they come in, all partitioned and padded, and the tooling over the top!

TE99, not to worry, syphilis and gonorrhea both are very fragile bacterias that barely survive outside of the human environment-- which is why they are only transmitted sexually. I bet those boys have been hanging around a long time, unused...

You know, if you made the dildoes, I might be able to come up with the box. Wonder what a new pair would bring . . .

One can't be too careful. ;)

I recall Henry Miller writing of leather dildos... I'd imagine they'd be a shade more comfortable to the receiver than those overgrown tent pegs.

I've made a lot of tent pegs myself. :D
Leather... I would think you'd want to soak it in wax, to keep it from soaking up all those bodily juices.

I prefer silicone these days.

For personal use? Absolutely! However, there is the Practical and the Art. There is no Art in Silicone. Glass, yes, but not in silicone.

I wonder what type of wood would make it these days,
Mahogany, Teak, Ebony, Hickory, Ash ?
All suitably waxed, of course.

There ya go, Bear. What a challenge!

Check out Stella's site. The link is in post #7. She has quite a selection.

Drat. (I got error 404 the first time)
Pity the fly whisks are for 'alternative' pursuits. Get a lot of flies in my garden when I'm reading. . . . .

Hey, I've got a fly whisk quietly sitting among my other Africana in the studio. It's just the ticket on a lazy, warm August afternoon. And HM doesn't do 'alternative uses' so it's purely a fly whisk. ;)

I'd stay away from anything open grained like mahogany, walnut or oak. Teak would be a good choice but the stuff is so hard and full of silica that it eats tools. Ebony is horribly expensive and hickory is really hard. Ash would be a good choice as would soft maple. We cut up a bunch of almond so she could make wands last year and this year I cut down a nectarine tree. I suspect that any of the fruit woods would be great. Hmmm . . . that's a thought. Once this tree is dried out I might commission her an anniversary present for HM. *snicker.*

Hey! I actually understand some of that stuff now!

I had the pleasure of being with VM and others when they checked out this rare woods place in Chi-town.

The men salivated over the wood choices, the grain, the matching pieces, the bookend pieces, the center cuts, etc.

I learned a lot and got a serious giggle over the things VM said.

Things like - "Ooohhhhhhhhhh!" while running his hands over a choice piece.

And - "I could drool all over this."

And - well, most things sounded sexual, is all I have to say. ;)

It was a fun and different experience.

:rose:

;) When you get right down to it, most things are sexual! Or at least, sensual.

I've been perving on the horsehair floggers for a while now. Indecision and promises to the mr not to spend have kept me in abeyance.

Don't fancy the idea of leather at all and whilst I do love silicone toys... tentacles?

*shudders*

My inspiration to turn them was a stash of carved ones that a couple found hidden in their New Orleans house. They were made of Sugar maple, which is relatively soft and fine grained.

What with all the new-fangled finishes available, I do use open-grained woods, and so does this guy;
http://hardwooddildos.com/

He seems to be doing all of his shaping via rotary sander, clever boy!

I bet you these bad boys are made out of Brazalian rosewood, which is now extremely unavailable for commercial use. Should've fetched a more handsome price.

One must wonder what could be achieved with a CNC multi-axial router. Full size commercial ones run into the thousands but I wonder what you could get a little, minimal one for. Perhaps Mr. Omega could rig one up to your laptop? He's a remarkably inventive guy.

Actually though, my skills are more three-dimensional than two. Like, I can sculpt it-- in wood, or clay-- but don't ask me to draw it or craft a blueprint! And then it's a matter of mold-making and finding the bucks for the high-grade silicone i would want to use. maybe an investor...

I have to say that i haven't seen anything remotely like what I have in mind, and there are some really wonderful minds out there!

Skink, they might as easily be made from the Asian tree, which also has that white sapwood.

Mija, those little bugs are so soft, and would nestle right up to your panocha and just buzz and buzz and buzzzzzzz.....
