I believe the difference between a politician and a statesman is a politician says and does what it takes to get elected and reelected. A statesman says and does what he or she believes is right regardless of public opinion. We have far to many politicians and to few statesmen leading(?) our country.

What you are seeing from Liz Cheney is statesmanship. Something we haven't seen for many years.

No. Anyone who bucks their party's politics and the opinion of those who elected them for the sake of doing what they believe is right is a statesman. I'm not particularly happy with Joe Manchin - an actual principled conservative in the Democratic party - but he is a statesman and doesn't bow to outside pressure. I respect him for that.

Unfortunately, the current political climate doesn't lend itself to statesmanship. It's a problem that started under Reagan, made acute under Obama, and went off the rails under Trump. And no - it isn't a "both sides are responsible" type of problem; it's obvious where the problem originates. Lincoln is spinning in his grave.

Then why don't these "statesmen" run as statesmen? Why are their decisions always a big surprise to those who vote for them? We know why. We also know that for the first time an American President did everything he promised the voters he would do, and he did it courageously, to the wild applause of the tens of millions of real Americans who voted for him.

As someone who is not really an admirer of anything the Cheney family has ever done, I will say that if you're in politics and there's nothing you're willing to possibly lose your job over, you're probably pretty worthless.

Liz didn't run on a platform of voting to impeach Trump or being anti-Trump. Instead she surprised her voters and her party with the announcement, and worked against his presidency after being elected.

3. He didn't really have any other promises, beyond glittering generalities like "so much winning you'll get tired of it".
