I think it would be more effective than "we're hoping that the sniper will surrender, just so we can wrap this up," especially if he's one of them kids that plays violent video games.
Let me clarify that: People die. They do it all the time. My grandfather just died, and I'm going to the memorial service Sunday. The sniper is unable to cause a significant deviation from society's standard behavior, except by the amount the average person fears him, which is, I believe, disproportionate to the actual physical threat he presents.
The police's statements so far have been laughable. The sniper has responded to everything the media's said ("he doesn't attack schools" shoots a kid at school, "He attacks solitary targets" he shoots a woman next to her husband).
Maybe I'm cynical. Maybe you feel like you have to be more sensitive to sniper issues, if you don't actually live in the threatened area. I do. I'd rather laugh at him than be crippled without ever even seeing him.
