Now, im working on the fourth chapter of a series of stories ive been writing...

this next chapter wont be heavy with the actual sex, so ive been trying to think of ways to get it more sexed up. I was thinking of having the chapter start out with the main character hooking up with someones shes already been with before... only to have it turn out to be a dream... this way combined with a series of other teasing events, she gets really horny and makes her come onto someone she really shouldn't....

but the thing is she wont actually get any sex, im trying to play up her loneliness in the next chapter...

the only problem is a lot of people say they stop reading a story that starts out with sex... whats everyones thoughts?

Start out with sex!

If the story is quality, it will hold the interest of the reader.

One of my stories (actually a part two) begins with wild sex. The story has been quite popular; no one has complained about sex in the first few paragraphs.

Some of us here used to joke about ways in which to get high votes for your story. We decided that characters should actually be engaged in sex in the first sentence - that would usually catch the reader! (I think we were joking - LOL)

Good luck!

I've started with sex. When you've written more than 100
stories, it sometimes feels like you've done everything.
But two of my stories on Lit start with sex, "Beautiful
Everywhere" and "1 Careless Moment." And only a few of
my stories are on Lit.
Other stories I've started with sex are "Susan" and "The
Longest Minute."
On the other hand, my longest story, *Heart Ball,* doesn't
get the main characters involved in intercourse until
chapter 25. (Okay, I cheat a bit. I use 3rd-person
omniscient POV, and each set of parents engage in
intercourse in earlier chapters.)

I usually don't like stories that start with a sex scene. I prefer to have a little story first, so thatr I'll get to know the characters, otherwise I don't care for them and their pleasure.

I'm not a massive fan of stories which are top heavy on sex. I don't like stories which start like this:

First Para: She is 5-4, 115lbs, big chest, tight bum, hot hot hot. He's a stud, 6-4 blonde hair, chiseled body.

Second Para: "Hey let's fuck!"
"Okay."

Third Para: Insert sex here.

I do actually hit the back button in that situation. Unless it is a series that I'm enjoying in which case the previous chapters suffice for intro, etc.

However, my feeling on this subject is that sex first is not a handicap. I've been seeing a lot more sex first stories doing well, and noticed that a few of my recent works where I have made sexual suggestions early in the piece have garnered more readings and votes.

It would appear that the Lit crowd is a changing. It appears everyones attention spans are getting shorter and no one wants to read a full Lit page of build up before getting the gear off. Which means dinosaurs like me who refuse to make the sex first change are gradually dying a very slow death in the ratings :( .

There's no reason you can't start a story with sex. There's no reason you can't start a story without sex either. You can pretty much do whatever you want in fiction as long as you do it well.

People who want you to start a story with a sex scene are probably going to stop reading after that scene is over anyhow, so why not just let them go at the start and write it the way you want? We all want our stories to be read and enjoyed, and we all make concessions to the audience, but once you start letting them dictate what you write and the way you write it, you stop being a writer and start being a performer, or worse, a panderer.

I don't know your work, but I know that the problem with most stories here on Lit isn't the sex--when you get right down to it, it's pretty hard for a competent writer to write a bad sex scene--but the other parts of the story: the characterization, the setting, the mood, the dramatic tension and the build-up to the sex. It's not that the good parts aren't good; it's that the other parts are terrible. I would concentrate on making the other parts better and the sex will take care of itself.

I can't really agree with this, my recent story has very little sex but a lot of sexual tension, takes more or less 2 Lit pages to get to the 'action' and garnered 100+ votes in two days from general Lit readership. I deliberately did not 'announce' the posting here in a desire to differentiate between 'authorly' votes and comments and general Lit readership reaction.

I'm with dr.M on this, it is the way the story is written that counts most amoungst the readership.

well, it wouldnt just be one stand alone story starting out with sex... this is the fourth chapter in my series and the whoever the two characters would be having the sex would already have been introduced and most likely will already have messed around before... and in the end it would just be a dream

the main reason I'd start it out with sex is because the story wont be heavily sexed up, it will be like an entire story of nothing but teasing and not much of a sexual climax...

My stories get read. Some even get votes and comments with no overt sex at all.

Even when I go on and on some people read to the end.

The slow death in the ratings can affect everyone, even those who write raw sex in ever paragraph.

Good stories are still read and appreciated. (Not that I'm claiming mine are good and some are real stinkers.)

The only pure 'stroke' story that I wrote started with sex :)

Please--PLEASE--don't give us the old "it was all a dream!" thing. That's as feeble as the "it tunred out it was her husband all along!" ploy.

Ya, I hate those too..

R, singing the Dallas theme tune..

its not that the entire chapter would be a dream, just that initial sex scene.... the story would go on and there would be other sex acts going on through the story...

A story that starts out with sex is fine by me, because that just serves as an appetizer for the rest: main course and dessert. Just the same as in real life. The more, the better!

I don't think I've ever started a story with a sex scene and I don't think I ever will... likewise I haven't started one with a dream and moved on, (started and ended one in a dream), but there's time I suppose.

I need to introduce everyone at least before they fuck each others brains out:D

I've written one 62,000 word tale without a single real sex scene in it yet... all innuendo and near misses.:)

I read erotica for the sex, not the romance. Romance novels cost about six bucks. I like stories that get me horny fast.

Wam! Right from the start. Keep the tension on a steady incline and then let them down gracefully.

If the story makes me adjust myself then it's good erotic fun.
