Can you tell me what the heck these plants are? The last one looks like a weed to me, but I don't want to get rid of it if it's not. I swear it's grown 3 feet in less than a month! I just don't know about this stuff.
I am going to have to get back to you on this, sweetie. My computer is pissing me off and won't get out of "Safe Mode" so the pics look like they are in "Artsy Negitive" form right now.
I will make sure to check back and see if I know what they are as soon as I get this peice of crap to work right.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner! I am a busy girl with school, fall planting, and life and all.
Okay, The first one is clearly a Rhododendron shrub. The large, glossy, lancelot leaves, and the scaled buds in the center of the cluster are indicitive of this species. It may be stunted in growth, because of the soil it is planted in or it is just young. They like acidic soil, so you may want to test your pH, and if it is higher than 6.5, then you should add sulfur to the site, in order to bring that pH down. That'll ensure that the plant thrives. Wait till next Spring to see what color the blooms are. They'll emerge from that center bud that has formed in the middle of the leaf cluster. If a big flower of some bright color doesn't emerge next May or June, then I am a liar. lol.
I have no clue what the second one is. I have seen a lot of 'weeds' that look like that, but not really anything of garden quality, though I don't know EVERYTHING! I will look through my botany resources to see if I can find anything.
Starryfish, I went ahead and ripped that mother fucker out of the yard today. Well, actually hubby did it for me, being as how I'm a weak little female. *boohoo* I asked him to, and being the nice guy he is, he did it without too much complaining.
Anyway...it's out, it's dead, it's friggin' huge! Apparently it had been there for a couple of years or sumptin', with people cutting it back so it wouldn't grow all crazy. Really huge roots that look like tubers. In any case, I've now got a lovely spacious area that is more balanced looking.
Harpoon, that is a good point about the leaves, and very well could be, but the apical (tip) part of the stem would have pods on it this time of year, I would think. I don't know for sure, but if it is a lily, it is an Asiatic species.
That is good that your soil is good. I have ALL clay, but I'll tell you... the Phosphorus and Potassium are so high, that my flowers are like champions because of it. My catnip is like the diggity dank of catnip. I've never seen such heavy flowering on catnip in my life. That is the part the kitties like best.
I say rip that shit out too, and start with what you know you want, from scratch.
That's part of the problem. I don't know what I want to do with it. I'm thinking tulips and anemones, but what do I plant after they are done? Or portulaca. Or different varietes of poppies? I can't decide. *whining* LOL
