Star Wars re-runs

. . . I;m watching the last one where Luke tells Leah that he is her sister. . .
You must be watching the original 1977 film.

I only remember the 20th Anniversary "Special Edition" release, and I am quite certain that I never saw any scene like THAT

C'mon over...I've got fresh chocolate chip cookies and lots of sf/fantasy novels. :D

Only like sweets of the human female variety, I'm afraid.

Got anything by Moorcock? How about Zelazny? A Rose for Ecclesiasetes (sp?) is one of my all time faves.

Oh, oh! I know! Knowing this authour is the sign of a true SF geek. Do you have any books by James H. Shmitz? Any of the Telzey Amberdon stories?

I'm with Liar: wishing somebody would put a stake in Lucas' heart. Stop him before...

There's no greater fan of the original Star Wars, but my disappointment started with Empire. Episode 1 was a joke, and episode 2 played like a poorly written buck rodgers. (I kept hoping for Daffy Duck to show up in costume and brighten things up, make the dialog seem to fit.)

Seriously, I'd rather rent Howard the Duck. The whole latter series is GL scrambling to erase and re-define a simple story because his friends in hollywood ridiculed him too much for not being artistic or deep.

But hey, wasn't that Yoda lightsaber battle cool? That's what most remember.

Read the Episode three story line in the link I provided. Episode 3 will be pretty dark. It will also have a PG-13 rating. All other Star wars are PG

I saw an interview with Lucas a few weeks ago. He said flat out that he wouldn't bring a kid under about 9 years old to the movie. He thinks it will be too intense for them

Here's an example of how dark it gets: Do you remember all of the jedi children in training in episode 2? Anakin kills all of them in episode 3.

ok. I did not need to see that. I don't want to know the story ahead of time. I want to see it presented on screen. I know you aren't looking to ruin anything for anyone Wildcard, but please use what is called "spoiler space" by just posting a link or something.

I'm optimistic. I liked Ep. II, thought it was fairly well done, and that expectation played a big part in why it was disliked, along with backlash from the original. People are asking too much from what started out as a low-budget film (he had to bribe his way into the studio just to make the first one...). Now everything has to be perfect, when as Belegon pointed out, they were never perfect from the beginning (Greedo... ).

Yes. Lucas never set out to create a mythology. He set out to redo the Saturday Morning Serials from his childhood.

and the expectations part of it is both huge and unachievable. Luke Skywalker was the first big movie hero in years that was not actually an asshole back in 1977*. That made him fresh and exciting. Han Solo had an edge, and served as counterpoint to Luke. Vader was a cold-blooded killer with no mercy. There were contrasts. There are good scenes sprinkled throughout Eps. 1 & 2. Qui-Gon is a good character. Ewan MacGregors Obi is a character I like. Darth Maul is a solid villian.

Ep. 2 has it's moments. Yoda teasing Obi-Wan in front of the kids plays right to me. "Master Obi-Wan has lost a planet." THAT is the little wise ass that enjoyed fucking with Luke's mind. And I am a fan of Mace Windu for the most part.

I have hopes for Ep. 3.

* example: biggest heroes in mid-70's movies were Bronson as a bloodthirsty vigilante and Eastwood's psycho-killer cop. "Do you feel lucky punk?" OOh yeah, that's a "good guy". Let's terrorize the crooks. He's a bad guy with a badge.

Maul was impressive, and Amidala is interesting as well, despite her odd relations with Anakin. Obi-wan is the one that impressed me the most, in the new ones, mostly because he doesn't seem to be another Luke, or even similar. I didn't overly like Luke; he seemed too close to being a pure character. He was good guy to the bone, and made few mistakes, had faith in everyone. "There's still good in Vader, I can feel it..." *shrug*

By the time we see Ep. 1,2, and 3, we already know Obi-wan failed the Galaxy by allowing Anakin to turn. Makes him a lot more likeable, IMHO. Same with Anakin. He's on a path to evil, and we know it. makes him easier to accept. They aren't good guys that are too good to believe in, like Luke was to me.

Just prattling.

Sin City is based on a comic book by Frank Miller, one of the best artists/writers in the genre. He's the one who revitalised the Batman franchise with The Dark Knight Returns.

Yeah. Miller is brilliant. I'm really looking forward t this one too, even though Bruce Willis is in it, isn't he?

I just love noir stuff.

I bet Sin City is going to be one of those movies that breaks new cinematic ground and it will be imitated relentlessly after it explodes at the box office.

Or one that is terribly done and overly casted and advertised, that we mostly tunr out to dislike due to poor medium transfer or over-expectations on our part. Either or...

Although I know it will be a disappointment and a merchandising ploy with too many cute special FX, I still want to see how Annikan turns into Vader, dammit.
Odds are it will involve him walking around in dark corridors (or it's equivalent in a galaxy far far away) looking constipated.

Besides from pretty crappy scriptwriting, there is one major reason why SW part 1 to 3 sucks monkey's rear-end:

You already know how it will end. There is not even the pretense that there will be any surprises, which makes it just one long and dumb (and if I may say so, pretty amateurish) SFX reel. Prequels must be the lamest idea ever in the history of filmmaking.

I won't see part 3 until they are out of eveytthing else at my local renter.

Prequels 4 years apart are annoying as hell, particularly when 1 and 2 had only Ewan and Nathalie to show, and especially when we got LOTR every year. God. I need to take a stand and PROTEST ... til video :D

Damnit man! Warn people first! That was a perfectly good drink of coffee I just wasted.

Hmmm, I think one of the big problems with episodes 1 and 2 was control. George had a vision that did him well in the 70s, but now adays you are expected to spend billions on special effects etc. But he probably wouldn't hand the project over to specialists, and the studios would have backed George on this, because they viewed him as a big money maker and would do anything to keep him happy. I also agree from above that no one would have had the guts to say "that really sucks" to him either, and therefore the story wasn't pulled into line.

Just the other day we were talking about a 50s cowboy movie where the badie died when the goodie fired 2 shots. What is the probability of that nowadays? Think Die Hard, and the fact that overkill is encouraged. You probably wouldn't find a recent movie that has a gun less than the equivalent of an automatic machine gun, or probably a bazoka [spelling?].

Dusk till Dawn is one of my all time fav movies. I also saw the film where Rodriguez Quentin directed [+ 2 others] called Four Rooms.Loved it!!!!! So will keep an eye out for sin city, but probably won't be here for another year.
