In the alternate reality of the Mirror Universe, the oppressed humans eventually overthrew the Kingon-Cardassian Alliance and restored the Terran Empire to it's former glory. They were then able to make the Empire the only major power in the Alpha Quadrant by adapting new Borg nanotechnology to create android-like neural net pathways within organic brains, essentially allowing them to reprogram enemies into allies.
In the year 2403, a prototype transdimensional conduit is developed by the Empire, allowing the opening of stable wormholes between alternate realities. They send Imperial Starfleet vessels from the Mirror Universe into the Prime Universe, declaring war on both the Federation and Klingon Empire, which were on the brink of another conflict prior to the attack, but are now forced to work together -- along with the struggling Romulan Star Empire and the re-emerging Cardassian Union -- to thwart the advance of the Terran Empire. This leads to a new Federation Alliance comprised of every major power in the Alpha Quadrant of the Prime Universe.
Our story starts in the Sol system, where sensors have been picking up strange flashes of energy near Earth in the last few weeks. This is a result of the Terran Empire's attempts to puncture a hole in the fabric between realities, and when they finally succeed, a transdimensional wormhole is opened in orbit around Earth and Imperial vessels begin pouring out. Our characters are in San Francisco at a speech being given by Admiral William Riker at the time the crisis unfolds, whether they are officers, academy cadets, civilians, or whatever. Earth is the first conquest for the Terran Empire, and we are forced to evacuate the Sol system and regroup on planet Vulcan, which is used as a backup headquarters for the Federation.
Obviously, this timeline exists as if Nero and Spock never went back in time and changed history, and it also disregards the events of Star Trek Online. Whatever your characters' motives are, they must come together to help fight the Terran Empire and send them fleeing back to the Mirror Universe.
