I'm a bit of a Kubrick anorak, and "A Life in Pictures" is just wonderful.
My favourite SK movie? I'd have to say 2001.
This is going to sound weird, and I'm normally such a bullshit-free zone, but 2001 goes beyond being a mere movie for me. There's 2001, and there's everything else. I've recently got it on DVD. I can just jump in at any point and be completely transfixed. The post-Stargate stuff in the room at the end is just the most amazing thing ever put on film. How the hell did he ever get such bizarrely wonderful stuff in a major Hollywood movie?

Complete, utter, total control!
Kubrick never worked without absolute control over a project. he never would have collaborated with Spielberg on anything unless Stevie was his bitch. Everthing in his movies is his, and he got good work out of lots of second-rate actors: Keir Dullea; the guy in FULL METAL JACKET; Tom Cruise; Ryan O'Neal, Malcolm McDowell; Sterlng Hayden, etc.

Maybe that was part of the explanation for Kubrick's extraordinary work; he was part of the Hollywood system, but still an outsider. A big part of the credit for this, at least from "A Clockwork Orange" on, should probably go to Terry Semel at Warner Bros.

Sure, 2001 is a CLASSIC!!!!
But the reason I like "The Shining" the best, is because I like a movie that is more straightforward. The first time I saw 2001,(the only time,)afterwards I thought, "HUH?" It took my Dad's explination, and watching a few documentaries to finally say, "OH!!!! I get it, now.
