Squishy Feet

This is just wrong.

I broke my left ankle a couple of years ago. I had the Physical Therapy, swam like crazy for exercise, even got back into martial arts without major pain. And it's all better.

Well, except that it aches on occasion, but I suppose anyone who has broken a body part knows all about that.

But in the past two weeks I've noticed I am now retaining water in that leg. I have a fat ankle. And a fatter foot. (It reminds me of when I was pregnant with my son and my ankles and feet were quite swollen. I could actually make an indentation in my foot with my finger. I've got pictures - scary stuff.)

Anyway, this is just on my left side, so I imagine it is somehow related to the previous break. I am actually wearing support stockings on that side to bring the swelling down. I did talk to a good friend who has medical training and he gave me some suggestions, and I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow, I suppose.

Groan.

Has anyone else experienced something like this, post-injury? I don't know whether to be worried or just annoyed that I can't wear my new sandals.

(They won't fit over my left foot.)

I fell off a 24 foot ladder about 7 years ago while at work (don't ask). I somehow managed to land on my feet, like a cat, but was a little off balance (as you might guess). I didn't break my ankle, but the orthopedic surgeon that I went to told me it would have been bettter if I had. I had torn every major ligament and tendon in that ankle.

8 weeks in an air cast, 8 weeks in a brace, and about 6 months of physical therapy, and it still gives me fits every once in awhile. And, yep, if I'm on my feet for a long period of time, it'll swell, and it's worse during that week or so around my period when I'm retaining water.

What fun.

My wife broke her leg 10 years ago. When she had a doppler last year on the leg (checking for a clot) they noticed that the tissue had been damaged so much that blood vessels had rerouted themselves. Put her on her feet for any length of time and there is fluid retention.

Elevate the leg.

Thanks, you two.

That does make sense. All the running around I've been doing, the back to school shopping, the relatives in town, etc.

I'm so naive. I thought when the leg was healed it was HEALED!

And - damn, damn, DAMN!

OK. All better now.

But I still have squishy feet. Well, one, anyway.

I often get swelling but it isn't squishy.

YES! Make sure you see the doctor, and whoever else you need to see.

I didn't (couldn't afford), and now I'm paying. I "favored" my left foot when I stood, which I did a lot, and in time it caused too much pressure on my right hip, which got arthritic, and it all subsequently moved.

Please, please, don't let that happen to you. If you do, you'll more than pay for it in spades later on in life -- I GUARANTEE IT!

Thank you - I will.

I did a little more checking online and there are some awful things out there, including permanent damage to parts which could result in permanent swelling.

Eww.

I'm glad to hear it.

'Cause squishy wouldn't work for some parts.
