I've got my printer drivers, and I've got Foxit Reader. Still need VLC player.

And may I just say that to me, putting only four USB ports in the back of the computer is a serious design flaw.

No, really. I've got four ports in the front, and I need to open a slider to access them. Fine, that way they won't get dusty. But to me that means those are temporary ports. I plug my external in when I need to access it, or my flash drive, so two ports in the front would probably be enough for me. If they want to put more, fine. However, I don't want any cables protrude from that permanently, nor do I want the slider to be open permanently. Everything that's permanent goes in the back.

And since there isn't a round keyboard/mouse plug (WTF are those called anyway?), I've got mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor and printer all needing a USB port, and that makes five.

It seems minor, but it really pisses me off.

I don't need four ports in the front, two will do it. I do, however, need more than four in the back. *stares icily at USB ports*

And yes, I could add some in the back, but that will require effort, and I want things to be perfect now. *puts on pouty princess tiara*

I switched from Mac's to PC's and swore every day until I got Rhonda here. Even then I was swaring at Xp until it started to work for me.

Google for "USB hub" - those give multiple ports (4 or more) while connecting to just one.

BTW, "round" keyboard/mouse connectors have been "PS2" for a while now...

Well, I have a mouse with a round one.

And I like that mouse, ya know? It looks like it, too... it's really worn down in the spots where my hand goes.

Though, I have to tell you, my last computer is not that old at all, and it had the USB ports exactly where I needed them. So I guess I just got spoiled.

Well, I have to say Artemis has been working really well for me so far. I'm pretty impressed. Maybe I'm just pessimistic because I expect everything computer-related to be complicated and have a million snags, but Artemis has favorably impressed me.

Logitech makes some excellent aftermarket 'puter cams. I have two. Load the software and it's video city.

Good thinking on getting XP...Vista is a PITA and slower than XP! Billy G screwed up royally on that OS.

You'll wanna get some USB hubs too...one port becomes four. There are never enough USB ports.

At some point, I do definitely want to get a cam. Though I don't know if there's anything more fun than the camera on my sister's apple laptop.

It just arrived! I've got a brand-spankin-new computer! A working one! One that's to my exact specifications! One I can write on! One I can play my games on!

And obviously I'm excited enough to start an entire thread about it!

Celebrate with me? And while you're at it, pray that I don't manage to mess it up when I set it up and all. And that there isn't anything wrong with it and that everything is indeed the way I want it to be.

I can't even describe how excited I am. My world will be right again after all.

Jen, I'm very happy for you. I know well the thrill of a honking new computer and I am pleased that such a nice person is having an unmitigated pleasure.

I am very happy for us, too: anything that makes you rip off your clothes and do a happy dance with your nipples erect from excitement... well, I truly can't see that as a bad thing.

As for names... well, I always name my computers with women's names: Chloé, Margaret, Bubbles, Peaches, Marilynne, Donna. Hey, it's just me. I've got half a dozen computers in my LAN at any time, though, so distinctive names are important.

When I was at Microsoft, there were clusters of computers with groups of names out of various pantheons. I remember working in the Sesame Street cluster, going off to Kermit and Big Bird to get files, but there were many others, such as the Little Rascals cluster.

For a single computer name? Oh, how about someone literarily appropriate like Balzac or Anais?

I'm really, really not a Gates fan (after his first couple of years), but I'm not - quite - convinced. Current new hardware makes Vista acceptable, if only just (bought my son a new laptop for his last birthday and just couldn't avoid Vista - he started off insisting on swapping to XP, but it turned out that sticking with it was less pain than the downgrade). Moore’s law means that inside a year, maybe less, hardware will be fast enough to make Vista no problem.

I really have no idea whether it's worth the effort - I run Linux - but "slower than XP" isn't a killer blow: any 'Doze is slower then raw DOS - which is still available.

Luddiism is attractive - I've been there and established a permanent camp - but it doesn't actually work.

Go Linux instead.
