Spreading some hope

Dum spiro, spero

Je suys encore vyvant

Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated

Anyway

People are often unreasonable,
Illogical and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
People may accuse
You of selfish motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,
You will win some false friends
And some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
People may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
Someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
They may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
People will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
And it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you have anyway.

~ Mother Teresa

This link shows that in even the darkest places and times, there is still courage, selflessness…

And hope.

LEONARD COHEN LYRICS

"Anthem"

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.

...and this one, damnit......

LEONARD COHEN LYRICS

"Democracy"

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on ...

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Often the best songs stir our souls and motivate us in profound way not even known. To me simply knowing that things are temporary can provide a deep sense of appreciation. Even the good times are slowly fading, so they must be treasured now, while we have them. The bad times, they too fade. They slip and disolve into better times. It may seem trite to some, but they must, for it is nature for one to end and another to begin. Good fades to bad, and bad to good. Life is a circle and we are simply riding the merry-go-round enjoying the sensations. I take great personal comfort from meeting new people, like the Litizens here. Even those that disagree with me, or anger me at times, provide an experience that I would not have gotten otherwise. I am thankful. For living I am thankful. For my wife I am thankful. For my gifts I am thankful. For my God constantly protecting me, I am thankful. I thank my friends. I am thankful for my health. I still breathe. As long as there is breathe in my body I CAN make a difference, to someone. If I help one person, ever, then my life was worth living and I can die in peace. That's what this world is all about to me. I try to help others. I get angry at myself when I can't see past myself, but I get gentle reminders from many people that love me, showing me my mistakes. I get not angry when I am shown my mistakes. I made them. I confess. I learn. I move on. To enjoy the here and the now, with hope always for the future. I grow. I learn. I am thankful.

THE BEATLES lyrics - "Let It Be"

(Lennon/McCartney)

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Yeah let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Hope, Maggie

At university I had a fearsome philosophy professor. She was in her early fifties. She looked like a witch, and I'm pretty convinced she actually was one. She dressed all in purple, including the eyeshadow, and even had the stock issue white streak in her long black hair. Everyone was in awe of her intellect. One day she wrote on the blackboard:

Hope Springs Eternal In the Breast Of Man

And told us all to write an essay on the meaning of the word "hope". We didn't know it, but she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer.

That was the last time I saw her.

I just found out she resumed her teaching two years later; and she's still going strong, twenty five years on.

(Giving that woman my Klingon smile.)

Rock on, sister!

Rob,

Thanks for starting this thread. I am one of those who you may mean by posting things which can drive a person down. However I am lucky enough to work in a job where I get to see some of the most amazing and uplifting people in the world. When ever life starts getting me down I think about the people I care for, their courage, their love of life, their never giving up until the very end, and in the end their acceptance of the end.

Again thanks for starting this thread.

This was in my morning paper.

It won't make some people happy, but it sure lifted my spirits.

I've been very worried that the wall between church and state was being dismantled. It's good to know some people, like Thomas Jefferson, want that wall high and wide.
