When I type, I can spell. When I write things out by hand, I can't for the life of me spell "Embarrassed" right, for instance. Does anyone else have this problem? Have my fingers memorized the proper spelling while my head has not?

I thinkthat's it exactly. When I'm typing i can feel when my finger moves too far or not far enough. There's definately a pattern I get used to. Handwriting doesn't have a feel, at least not to me. It's just a bunch of swirls and lines.

I spell better when I do it by hand, cause I go slower, anf a lot of my misspellings are due to bad typing.

I spell worse on the keyboard, too. Well, really what I do is type homophones of the word I want. Right/Write and so on.

Hi

Spelling has never really been a problem, but typing is, my fingers are just too damn big and too damn knackered up, most of my spelling mistakes are typo's and double strikes.

I do agree though that handwriting is better for minimum spell balls up's.

When I type by hand I seem to get letters wrong by mistake. I put 'a's or 'i's where there should be 'e's and I miss letters like 'L' and 't', especially when there are several together (like 'little').

When I type I do tend to write a few homophones too, not sure if I do that when writing by hand because I don't write in a context that contains many.

Typing, writing doesn't matter which, I can't spell either way. It's like an evil gift. Two dictionaries, spell check and a very put upon editor make it better, but I still can't seem to ever post anything that's error free.

making mistakes faster

I am with the ones here who make more mistakes when typing than with writing.

I think it is not only because of what has been mentioned about long hand taking more time, but also because it is so easy to fix mistakes on the computer. When I am writing out things long hand, I tend to want them to look nice... scratch throughs and writings over don't.

I use write so rarely now that it's hard for me to say. Handwriting is just too slow. What gets me is when I capitalize something and then it looks funny (spelling wise). IF I were to write it out, I am sure I would make less spelling mistakes because I am slowing down. Hard to fat-finger with a pen. But since I am left-handed and write upside down, it is guaranteed to be smudged...

Nope. Spelling isn't much trouble for me either way. Though, longhand I tend to truncate words, sentences, and paragraphs since I'm used to typing around 60ish words a minute when I create and my handwriting is much, much slower.

I spell better when I write, either in longhand or typing. Used to be really good at spelling bees, but I seem to have lost the skill of spelling out loud. Always have to stop and jot it down, unless it's an easy one.

don't even get me started on spelling out loud

one word

g - r - i - l

I barely know how to write longhand anymore. I get tired after maybe thirty seconds. I probably make tons of mistakes out of simple physical anguish.

I do know this, though... I get a little too used to Word's auto-correct features. It pisses me off sometimes (so I got rid of many of the features), but I tremble when I think of writing "Acomodations for an embarrasing comittee..." without it.

How many of you have tried different spell checkers?

Bad ones point to the blunders but rarely suggest the correct replacement. I've finally found a spell checker that thinks like I do and I love it. Nine out of ten times, it knows what I meant, consequently, my spelling skills continue to fade.

I'm still deciding if spelling without a net is a skill I want to keep.

I was in the third grade befor I could spell my last name (It has thirteen letters in it) and as a result never realy learnd to spell anything else.

I do tend to do better (except for homophones) on the computer because the word just doesn't look right.

Wordperfect has a fair speel chucker.

I actually spell extremely well, but typing, well, in addition to the aforementioned homophone problem, I get dyslexic. I think that has to do with creeping arthritis. It seems to be coming at a different rate in each finger.

Maybe they were right, and I shouldn't have been cracking my knuckles.

Now that I had not considered. I just throught it was my trypewritter that coudln't speel.

I am pretty ok with spelling both by hand and typing. Never had much of a problem with that stuff apart from the occasional lapses of course. Typing works better for me though as I type 60wps when it's from the top of my head, otherwise I type 52wpm. Sitting by the typewriter or computer works better for me, a thought comes into my hand and I just let it flow. No worries about my hand getting tired. Main problem with spelling are the darn typos that sneak in now and then...
