I'm interested in this war for family reasons. Specifically the political ramifications in Spain in the later stages of the war and after. I know absolutely nothing, so any information would be great. Also, any suggestions for links to visit, or books to get from the library are very much appreciated.

My father's family came from Spain, and I was told that the government confiscated their lands and they were forced to flee the country. I'm trying to get an idea if this might be true. Thank you.

It may be true. It's a good bet it is if your father's ancestors weren't Catholic.
Besides the conquistadores and priests, a lot of people that ended up in the "New World" were actually people banished during the Inquisition. They came as slaves and whatnot...

Anyway, enough with the history lesson... I don't know if this is quite the time frame you were looking for (?!?), but it's one of my favorite subjects!

If you're looking for books, a really great one is called, "The Lost Land" by John Chavez... it gives a good historical outlook, as well as current impact on the different cultures...

Hope this helps somewhat!

Research

I poked my nose (it's a dog thing) into some Internet sites, found that war was declared in April 1898 and a peace treaty signed in December 1898. It isn't likely that the US government would have been confiscating land in a 6-month long war, but I have no info to prove or disprove my opinion. One page I liked was:

Note: if this link isn't highlighted it's because I don't have a clue what I am doing. If it works it was an accident.

Happy hunting! :)
