the Russian Soyuz capsule that ferried them back from the international space station made a very steep re-entry, known as a "ballistic re-entry," and landed 260 miles off course on Saturday morning. Mission Control in Moscow reported all three were in satisfactory condition although the ride home subjected their bodies to severe G-forces, up to 10 times the normal force of gravity. Besides being far off course, the landing was about 20 minutes later than planned.

Being a bit of a NASA Nerd, I watched the re-entry procedure a few nights ago returning Astronauts from the IST.

It didn't go well...

This took place in Russia although the regular NASA 'voice' that narrates Shuttle landings was comforting, even his voice showed stress as the landing capsule became overdue and no information was being released.

One report stated the capsule did not release a portion of the entry vehicle and failed to turn the heat shield in a proper direction and that the turbulence of the extreme upper atmosphere ripped it away and the capsule assumed the re entry position.

The crew was subjected to forces ten times the force of gravity, 10G's, about twice the usual forces involved, and came to earth some 260 miles away from the original destination.

Tonight, on the NASA channel showed the astronauts arriving, the men were under their own power the two women crew members needed assistance departing the bus and walking.

This is the second so called, 'ballistic' landing of the Soyuz and is troubling to some NASA officials.

Troubles me also as the Shuttle goes out of service in 2010 and the new space vehicle does not come on line until 2014. The four year interim will be filled by Russian vehicles to take Astronauts into space and return them.

Ugh...
