Sorry, JBJ

A very good writeup.

And a great writer.

The last thing he wrote that's worth a damn is Mister Majestyk of 40 years ago. I bought a few of his Detroit noir, and they suck. But the Westerns rock.

Each to their own opinions.

He has sold a lot of books and had a lot of movies made from his books. Sound like he was pretty good.

Just for the record, how many books have you sold?

Hahahahahahaha

Careful old man folks is paying attention to how you fight, and your fundamental arrogance.

My question to you is, how many of your books are best sellers? Any of them win Pulitzers?

Somebodys always got a longer one.

And some apparently don't have one at all. :D

(and thus turn to the old shell game.)

One of my favorite writers...loved his books--especially 52 Pick Up and Get Shorty.

Arrogance? You must have read the wrong post. I didn't say anything about anything I have written.

I asked how many books you had sold as a measure of your expertise in offhandedly dismissing a whole lifetime of work that millions liked and bought.

If it is just your opinion then say so and we're talking apples and oranges.

You play the same game as your butt buddy.

I guess I need to sign up with a vanity press like some folks around here.

I've read a lot of his books. Some were awesome. Some were just ok, including the ones they made into movies. But he had a unique voice and style, in the true sense of the word. Very few authors can say that.

RIP Elmore Leonard.

That's JBJ's opinion, it just comes across in varied ways.

And I think JBJ is qualified to comment on the quality of those books. After all, he is the consumer. His opinion may differ from the millions that loved those works, but it doesn't make him wrong. Apples and oranges indeed.

I'm a huge Elmore Leonard fan. Almost every good writer I know of cranks out 5-6 super-duper reads then goes to hell. Leonard did it, too. They all do it after they make some money and get invited over to sniff Miley Cyrus' soiled underwear.

Occasionally, rarely, writers improve over time. Critics hate Raymond Chandlers last books, but I just read LITTLE SISTER and believe its better than THE BIG SLEEP, and THE LONG GOOD BYE and PLAYBACK are on order, so we'll see.

Only read "The big three" from Elmore and each time because of the movies.

Thought he was pretty good, but just never got around to reading more.

As for the other debate going on, I don't feel a published author's-self or otherwise-opinion is worth any more or less than a readers.

To think so is pretty arrogant and if the only way someone here could render an opinion is if they published something a good portion of the forum would be gone.

I guess I need to sign up with TEXs vanity publisher to earn his respect.

Not even that would earn you any respect. Quit being an asshole and you might make a few points with some people. Quit trying to sound like you are an authority on writing might also help. Quit trying to reinvent the writing wheel is another point.

Respect is earned, not given.

How much better are you at wiping your ass today than you were 60 years ago?

I can assure you that I was along way from Detroit on Tuesday, with witnesses.
