Sooooo, the UN wants the US to pay

I read the Washington Post article. By those standards every government owes some reparations to people that were harmed in currently times or history. How did the US get called out on this alone?

Aren't there many countries that have committed genocide and slavery?

Yea but hating other countries (especially the not so white ones) is just racism, xenophobia and sexism.

Only hating the USA is fair, inclusive, diverse and just.......ask any 'progressive' Democrat. Only the USA is bad, it's the worst thing that's ever happened to minorities and women in all of recorded human history.

This will not happen.

I was told I'd get a free ride to college for being black. Nope.

I was told affirmative action would guarantee me a secure and lucrative career path. Nope. I've been working for 25 years, probably another 20 to go.

So the new thing is I am going to have money fall out of the sky into my lap because the 1% said so? And y'all actually believe someone is going to make this happen?

Don't be stupid, keep it moving.

Who told you that shit and why did you swallow it?

Is the guy with the board in his eye the US or the UN? Have you forgotten all the horrors they don't get evolved in? Wait that is once again the US fault for not spending the money and troops.

Probably you, for defending the USA in any way.

Phro hates the USA with a white hot searing passion, it's the only way to be progressive.

How many times do I have to say this?

Move the UN to Haiti, by force if necessary. If they can unfuck that hell hole, then we might start paying attention to anything they do. Until then, we should leave it. NATO too as long as Turkey is still in.

Why doesn't the UN stop black slavery in Moosefuck cuntries

I'm sure you'll get a Strongly Worded Letter™ if you don't.

Essentially a case of a bunch of un-elected dweebs spending other peoples money, or at least trying to.

We're starting to have some issues with the various tribes out here. They somehow think the "Indigenous Peoples" resolution passed by the UN has the force of law on the US.

I never saw such splitting between minority groups, as one sees today : some christians versus gay and transgender individuals, whites versus blacks, christians versus muslims, atheists versus christians and so on.

One gets the feeling that part of it is manufactured. That they're using those minorities as a tool, and that there's a different agenda to all this.

I mean, they come up with all these strong ideas that they know will generate controversies, instead of coming up with more common sense ones:

Better access of disadvantaged black kids to good schools. Education is vital.
Like, they introduced charter schools in predominantly poor black communities, and this led to a drastic decline in their literacy (and all the problems that come with that), from what I read. Not ok to experiment on poor minorities.

Or "let's make all toilets unisex" movement, instead of focusing on real cases of discrimination against transgenders.

I just read the UN report. Both Ish's "Sooooo, the UN wants the US to pay
REPARATIONS to blacks." and the headline of the article in the Post "U.S. owes black people reparations for a history of ‘racial terrorism,’ says U.N. panel" are wildly misleading about what the UN panel was asked to inquire about and what they concluded and recommended in their report on their visit to the US.

You all should try reading the source material instead of being told what to think by the media and Ish. It is maybe 20 pages.

Report of the Working Group of Experts on People of
African Descent on its mission to the United States of
America

You made a tu quoque argument, and I used that to illustrate it. Sorry if it went over your head.

REPARATIONS to blacks.

Fat chance.

Ishmael

From teh article in teh link above...
The reparations could come in a variety of forms, according to the panel, including "a formal apology, health initiatives, educational opportunities ... psychological rehabilitation, technology transfer and financial support, and debt cancellation."

To be sure, such initiatives are nowhere in the cards...

But hai, Ishmael wants to wax indignant this morning....

I didn't see this initially, and indeed it puts a different spin on things.

1.Personally, I think that these are appropriate:
- a formal apology
Yes, because these sort of things impact and often change prejudiced attitudes at a subconscious level
- educational opportunities
ending this vicious cycle: poor neighborhood = bad schools = higher chances of illiteracy or drugs, gangs and so on = which cut by half chances of succeeding in life
Teach a person how to fish instead of giving them fish
- health initiatives.
Well known fact that research, public health and so on are skewed in favour of the white majority.

2.But personally, I think that these are inapproppriate :
- financial support
debt cancellation

On one hand yes, there IS a legacy of racist attitudes which need to be addressed (through a formal apology or funding more people like Bryan Stevenson /Just Mercy and so on).
-- But why favour one ethnic group over others from a financial pov? As horrible as what happened in the past was, those ancestors are long gone, and the current generation is in a different place.
