Last November, my husband decided to get out of his small business. A retirement plan job looks good as you get older and you need to get enough years under your belt to get vested. There was a job he is interested in and he put out his resume.
Since the birth of our son, he has been the daytime parent while I have worked 32 hours a week, carried the health insurance and built my retirement.
Last Wednesday, I was given the option of going full time or being laid off, beginning the middle of March. I thought about it and mulled it over for 30 seconds or so and I chose lay off. I get a decent severence package and benefits through the summer.
The word got out about my lay off and yesterday I was called about two different jobs that people have coming up that I might be interested in - both part time. Both have said that they would be willing to wait until I am ready to go back to work. Today my husband got the call and he is going in to start orientation tomorrow. He will have full benefits for himself and the family with part time work and I won't have to worry about getting benefits. He can continue to run his business (which is in music) doing something that he loves but without the grind of HAVING to do it.
Opportunities! I am so excited. I have been looking forward to the time off but had that uneasiness about the health care benefits.
